I don't want to live in a world where this happens.

I used to be a big fan of Ricky Gervais, but Life's Too Short, Derek and his stand ups since Fame have been shocking. Extras was probably the last good thing he did.

Because people don't like a global celebrity gurning at the camera and making mong faces?

The podcasts were good, especially the early XFM ones.

My brother's in that as an extra.

He's one of the soldiers.

Cos he's a soldier and there's a whole extras company that just casts soldiers as soldiers.

The new Arnie movie Sabotage looks pretty interesting, despite the not exactly stellar reviews. Arnie isn't playing a good guy, which is the first time in a long time, the original Terminator in fact, if you discount that shitty Batman film.

One of the more complimentary reviews is here - http://www.reelviews.net/master.html

Also the writer and director have got good form too, notably Training Day and End Of Watch.

When reviewers use words and phrases like 'an ugly, abrasive and thoroughly charm-resistant bag of slop' and 'The bloodshed is unrelenting and, ultimately, exhausting. There are [only] so many disembowelments and head shots, and bodies torn into pieces you can take' and 'It does have a weird, boldly ugly edge that makes for unexpectedly compelling viewing' I tend to start to want to watch a film all the more.

Trailer here -

Yesterday I saw Rio 2. Which was ok. Not as much fun as the first film but had its moments. Quite liked the avatar ish plot myself. Utterly predictable in every way mind you.

Also I saw Divergent. The plot is utterly silly and ridiculous. At least in terms of the whole scenario of people sorted out into different factions. But if you're prepared to accept it and go with it there's a fairly decent teen action flick there. I quite enjoyed it. To my surprise.

The Battery.

A zombie movie done on a shoestring budget that is stylish, tense, and pretty fresh and original.

It's a bit of a road trip movie, and like all good zombie fiction it primarily focusses on the human relationships.

Highly recommended.

I've seen a few films lately. Don't think I've mentioned them here.

Need for Speed - Horrendously predictable, not very well acted and yet I rather enjoyed it.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - Pacing is all over the place, sidelines the main villain for most of the film and gets a bit emo. When it's having fun it's superb - such as the 'mundane' heroics like saving people from traffic and kids from bullies etc. But the more 'serious' relationship drama is incredibly tedious as is the whole exploring the relationship with Osborne. And it's about 50 minutes too long. Missed the mark terribly. Though Garfield is brilliant as Spider Man.

Brick Mansions - A fairly average action flick. Nothing special but just about entertaining enough for its brief duration. Did some things I didn't expect so that's good. The end in particular I felt was very good.

POMPeii - Fun swords and sandals that knows not to go overboard into boredom of being an 'epic'. Made by anyone else I'm sure it could have ended up a 3 hour boredom fest but Mr Anderson keeps it nice and short and makes a fun popcorn movie. Delightful pomp from Kiefer as the nasty Roman senator.

Post subject:  Re: The Movie topic

I watched Robocop over the weekend too and it was tired modern storytelling that we've seen a million billion times. It followed all of the yawnsome tropes of modern superhero films.

The two hour run time had less action packed in than the tightly focused original. The original certainly didn't have the first hour devoted to Robocop learning to shoot a gun about a droid army. When Robocop was finally allowed out onto the streets he catches one criminal before going on a rampage because - oh noes - he is still Alex Murphy. In fact, Peter Griffin would be bored in his seat waiting for them to say the film title in the film because it's only mentioned, like, once. The whole film has Alex Murphy referred to by his name, probably because the Film Executives (c) TM have focus tested that an audience won't relate to the man in the machine if he doesn't have a name. It smacks of Hollywood Film Execs (c) TM trying to appease everyone at the same time and failing miserably as they always do.

"He kills people. Killing people is bad. It'll corrupt the children's minds." "Let's get him to only fight robots"
"Will the kids think that he's cool?" "Let's make him have a visor. Kids love things that are black still, right? Make him black. And shiny. Super shiny."
"But he walks about like an asthmatic rhino. The children won't be interested in him lugging himself about." "Make him vault around like a fucking ninja using his brain computer to calculate trajectory and stuff"

And so on. And don't get me started on the Television Show interludes with Samuel L Fucking Jackson in them. What the hell were they about? Pointless. The baddie that killed Robo in the first place? Not even really a baddie. The CCTV crap? Why the hell can't the police just run a computer not attached to a Robot cop through the CCTV from 2011 to find baddies? And then track them. Or watch them do bad stuff. There seemed enough cameras everywhere. It was stupid. Oh, oh, I couldn't care less about this film. Utterly ruined the original which still has a special place in my 80's child; a film I watched a few months ago and could easily be released today and be warmly received.

"Out Of The Furnace" :

Dark, gritty drama/thriller.
Great cast : Christian Bale, Casey Afflek, Woody Harrelson, Willem Dafoe, Forrest Whitaker etc.
Generally unsurprising & unoriginal, but great acting (Harrelson in particular is a right nasty c**t you wouldn't want to meet up a dark alley !) , mood & direction kept me hooked.
My type of film basically....
8/10 also.

This has been on my watch list since the first reviews came out last year, and it is now 'obtainable' (well it has been for a while I believe, still not on bastard Netflix though).

I agree it's rather formulaic and unoriginal but by christ the talent on display, Forrest Whitaker alone can do more acting with a single expression than the entire cast of most other films between them (I swear sometimes with Whitaker it's like looking into the eyes of a conflicted god).

Harrelson is off-the-scale effective as the baddy (not in a chewing the scenery sort of way, but so genuinely sinister I was happy to pause the film and go for a piss at one point).

Affleck and Bale are excellent too, in fact, everyone's excellent, just the little bit-part of 'meth man' is wonderfully done.

Very much a genre film but done in a different way and with a different focus, no glory or happiness at the end, even though it ended up where it was 'supposed to' by the terms of the genre.

TBH I think there's enough here to make a decent season of a TV series, there's so much going on the film could have easily been three hours long and still been captivating, but then again to get so much into a two hour film is a remarkable achievement.

Very downbeat and depressing, which is where I want films to take me to sometimes.

I concur, 8/10.
