I only just learned that Jean Claude Van Damme played the original suited up guy in the original design of the Predator but that it was redesigned as it looked like a shit mantis. JCVD was recast cause he had a mardy on because his character was invisible and he couldn’t Kung fu.

The mantis looked ... alright? Thank god they shut that down.

I also didn’t realise there’s a ton of deleted scenes for The Terminator on YouTube which houses some hilariously terrible acting but that an extended ending scene sets up Termy 2.

Learning stuff is good.

Or because he broke the head. Or because he was too short. Or because Fox said so. Or because he kept blacking out.

No-one seems to know why JCVD was fired. There's a really good article on it (and the rest of the Predator shooting story) here:

Last night I watched 'A Monster Calls'

I’ve never read the book so went in not knowing what it was about or what was going to happen. It’s a great film but not one to watch if you already have ill parents.

I was a shambling wreck by the end of both book and film.

I really liked Thor 2 but it seemed to not get great reviews. Then again I'm a massive Ecclestone fanboy.

I think Thor 2 was probably the worst MCU movie. And they had they had Kat Dennings not showing any cleavage or curves because she was in a massive coat the entire movie.

I can't remember much else about it.

Cras didn't like the tube route. I was at a wedding where stuff was filmed with M but I don't like to mention it and it was quite entertaining.

Just watched another Netflix Original that was added today - '1922', based on a Stephen King story apparently.

"A simple yet proud rancher in the year 1922 conspires to murder his wife for financial gain, convincing his teenage son to participate."

It's pretty much what you'd expect, but an enjoyable watch nonetheless.

It's annoying because it's a very good joke otherwise and it wouldn't have made it one iota worse to just not fuck up the geography.

I watched “The Handmaiden.”

It’s bloody brilliant.

It’s by the god-like director of Korean masterpiece Oldboy. It’s a good story, well told, has some nice twists and turns with excellent cinematography. The characters are great, the actors and actresses are marvellous and it has the director’s blend of intrigue and sinister worry.

Now, for the fellas, it has some sex scenes which are quite graphic, almost pornographic even, but super sexy. Black Swan kinda sexy. There’s also some interesting scenario involving some balls.

I watched the extended cut and it went on for 2 hours and 45 minutes so make sure you’ve got the time before you turn it on. I’ve no idea what’s cut in the original version but if it’s the sex then I’d highly recommend the extended cut because, well, everyone loves some sexy sexyness don’t we.

Jangly balls out of 10. Which is the highest rating any film can ever receive ever.

I went to see 'The Death of Stalin' yesterday. Excellent performances throughout, with the standout being Simon Beale's superbly creepy and dominating portrayal of Beria but all the cast had particular merits. The mixture of accents worked really well. The showstopper is Jason Isaac's Zukov, who's clearly loving every second of screentime.

It's a very bleak farce, and would transfer well to the stage. Some sequences are laugh-out-loud funny, but it's not laugh-a-minute, more a carefully paced building up of tension. There's a few very uneasy laughs throughout the film that make the audience feel uncomfortable, but that's unavoidable given the nature of the regime and is well-handled in the film.

Worth going to see, comrades

Agree. Even knowing next to nothing about the state of the political scene in Russia in the early ‘50s it’s still amusing. The whole cast are very good.

I watched The Princess Bride for the first time last night.

Was the perfect film to round off a busy weekend with the family.

I watched a film last night that made me cry.

It was "In This Corner of the World" which is an anime which apparently has some Studio Ghibli chap called Sunao Katabuchi who worked on Kiki's Delivery Service so you know it's going to be good. Also, it was funded from fricking Kickstarter! I'm endlessly amazed at what comes out of Kickstarter y'know.

Anyway, the film is set around the time of WW2 in Hiroshima and Kure. It follows the exploits of a lovely female protagonist that is typical Ghibli - nice, polite, always wants to help the children and elders and all that trash - as she's grows up from a young woman. Not to spoil it for anyone, but for a Ghibli-esq film it gets kinda dark because, y'know, the war and, um, a big fucking nuclear bomb. Yup, it goes off.

It was an amazing film. Heartfelt, deep, emotional - just like the best Ghibli films are - but this time the story is contrasted by the backdrop of war, duty and loss. With looming thoughts of North Korea, Trump, nuclear threats and Japan amending it's articles on war it's all the more worthy of your time and attention.

I'd recommend everyone of all ages watch it. It's available now at your local ["online shop"] or out on Blu-Ray and DVD at the beginning of November. Amazon has it for pre-order.

Actually Amazon also has Your Name (which is hands down the best film I've seen this year) on Blu-Ray on 7 November. So, pick them up, init.

As is Spirited Away when you realise it's alluding to prostitution.

Was it fun prostitution like in Pretty Woman, or sad prostitution like in Dirty Dancing?

It’s THE BEST film.
Labyrinth is SECOND BEST film.

I’m disappointed you’d not seen it before. It gets better every time you watch it. Anyone who doesn’t realise that it’s the BEST film ever made is both wrong and may have poison inside them. Go to the doctor immediately and tell them that you don’t think The Princess Bride is the best film ever. Maybe they can save you before it’s too late.

I rather relied on you to know what you should watch. I did say it was really very dark.

But honestly, I only remember it in parts. Mainly that it was by far the bleakest thing that Nacchi recommended to me - I rather expected it to lighten up at some point.

Here's a few of the "highlights" for you to remember (spoils just in case anyone else wants to see it)

(NB it's an eyewaterer)

(You should definitely watch it BTW so don't look at the spoiler please):

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
In order of appearance:

Character dies of starvation immediately.
Plenty of charred innocent civilians from the allied firebombing.
Main character's mum is horribly burned.
Main character's mum dies shortly thereafter. The body is festering with maggots eating the flesh and the orderly at the hospital exclaims loudly in front of the son that he wants "it" out of the hospital.
MC doesn't tell his sister that her mum has died.
MC gets screwed over by his aunt who take most of his possessions that he was clever enough to bury before the firebombing.
MC's aunt is a bitch.
Aunt is more concerned with selling his dead mum's clothes for rations.
She does and then she refuses to give MC and his sister rice because they aren't helping the war effort.
Some other thoroughly miserable stuff happens.
MC's sister gets really sick.
MC's sister suffers from malnutrition and the doctors refuse to help.
MC can't get any nutrition because of the war.
MC finally gets some food! Sister dies before he can finish cooking it.
MC sleeps with his dead sister because what's he going to do the body? He's a kid. Dead corpse sister fully on display.
MC finally gets some fuel to cremate the corpse. Has a nice old time carrying his sister about and boxing her up.
MC shoves his sister in a sweetie can.
MC dies of starvation.
Nice bloke who is cleaning up the dead bodies of children who have starved then throws MC's sweetie can filled with dead sister in the garbage.

THE END.

I've read that the story is based on a semi-autobiographical account of the boy and that the scene where his sister carks it is accurate to what happened in the story. I assume that the scene in the film is accurate to the story which makes me upset just thinking about it.
