There's a joke about that at the end of one of the later ones, "we'll get there eventually" or similar.

Blue Ruin is a fantastic film. Not much in the way of exploding robots though.

I know you can't really say that anyone is 'wrong' if they don't like a film, but denouncing Blue Ruin like that has to be getting pretty damn close.

I'm very much looking forward to seeing Green Room, which is the director's new film.

Grim... reminds me a bit of a mate at work, who gets bored with films or games if there isn't something EXCITING going on at all times. Like, if there's a cutscene in a game he'll go for the Escape key within about 6 seconds. He borrowed my Switchblade Romance DVD off me but then says he got bored so went for a piss without pausing it, and then missed the BIG REVEAL, after which point of course the film made no sense whatsoever.

He was moaning to me about it when we were back at work so I was trying to figure out what had happened, and I was like 'What about the scene at the garage?' and he told me he'd got bored at that point and gone for a piss, 'And you didn't even pause it? But without the information conveyed there THE ENTIRE REST OF THE FILM WILL BE RENDERED NONSENSICAL' - and he was still insisting it was the film's fault for boring him and then confusing him because it was getting too 'chatty'.

He likes the Transformers films because they're full of cars and robots exploding.

I'd settle for something exciting happening at all. I feel it would have been much better as a 30 minute short.

I watched Crimson Peak again last night. I still really like it. The scene that is shockingly violent now seems to make more sense in the overall scheme of things in the film's story. It's frequently about the brutality of nature and how certain characters feel they have to behave that way to survive. It's also one of the most beautifully gothic films ever made. Well worth a re watch.

Not seen it, mate.

I really enjoys triple 9. It got mixed reviews though. I felt it was compatible to heat or training day, so if you liked those films, you might like triple 9. Maybe

Isn't Project X about a party or something? Sounds a fairly dull premise.

I watched 'SUPER' on Netflix last night which was quite odd. I liked it and would perhaps give it a 7/10, but there were some really jarring tonal shifts as it managed to be all of genuinely funny, violent, sad, disturbing, uncomfortable, emotional, bleak and uplifting in a little over 90 minutes.

It's not an amazingly good film, but it's definitely something a bit different and overall I would recommend it.

Also, I did not know that Ellen Page is gay. She was really rather fanciable in this but then Wikipedia says she is gay so my chances with her, which I had pegged at 'pretty good', are now practically zero.

Oh yes, Kevin Bacon is great in it, with a splendid frothing finale.

It's on Netflix UK so if you've got Netflix UK, give it a punt.

Just to give you an idea of its unusually hard edges though, it's rated 18 by the BBFC, where the likes of Deadpool and Kick-Ass get 15s.

SHUT UP, CRIME! << Motto.

Plot synopsis from RT follows:

Quote:
In the outlandish dark comedy SUPER, James Gunn has created what is perhaps the definitive take on self-reflexive superheroes. When sad-sack loser Frank (Rainn Wilson) sees his ex-addict wife (Liv Tyler) willingly snatched by a seductive drug dealer (Kevin Bacon), he finds himself bereft and wholly unable to cope. But soon he decides to fight back under the guise of a DIY superhero called Crimson Bolt. The rules were written a long time ago: You are not supposed to molest children, cut lines or key cars; if you do, prepare to face the wrath of the Crimson Bolt!

'The Brothers Grimsby' or 'Grimsby' - whichever title you prefer.

It's not great cinema or anything, but at a pleasingly compact 83 minutes it only needs to deliver a few decent belly-laughs to make it worth watching, and it certainly achieves that IMO.

I'd be interested to know what the BBFC advised to have them pre-cut to get the 15 instead of the 18.

Either way, it made me laugh enough (and think, 'Oh right, you're really going to go there' enough) for me to say 6/10.

Woah! Hardcore Henry is an amazingly kinetic 90 minute blast.

I'm not sure it's a particularly good film as such, but it's certainly a lot of insanely violent entertainment, and Sharlto Copley gets to go a bit bonkers too. (This is a good thing.)

I think you'd probably need to appreciate videogames to get much out of it, but I guess this is the right forum for that.....

Recommended, especially if you like the new DOOM game.

Great soundtrack too.

Couple of recent watches from me:

EYE IN THE SKY - This was really good.

<< IMDB - It stars Helen Mirren as Colonel Katherine Powell, a UK-based military officer in command of a top secret drone operation to capture terrorists in Kenya. Through remote surveillance and on-the-ground intel, Powell discovers the targets are planning a suicide bombing and the mission escalates from "capture" to "kill." But as American pilot Steve Watts (Aaron Paul) is about to engage, a nine-year old girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute, reaching the highest levels of US and British government, over the moral, political, and personal implications of modern warfare. >>

Can't recommend this one enough, superbly done from start to finish, and the last on-screen performance by Alan Rickman. It takes the time to make everyone a human being you care about, from the drone pilots in the US to the 'potential collateral damage' on the ground, and everyone inbetween.

Easy 9/10, maybe even 9.5/10.

HIGH-RISE - Based on the book of the same name which I believe has long been considered unfilmable, and now having watched the film I'm half inclined to agree.

<< WIKI - The film centres on a luxury tower block during the 1970s. Featuring a wealth of modern conveniences, the building allows its residents to become gradually disinterested in the outside world. However, as the infrastructure begins to fail and tensions between residents become apparent, the situation becomes anarchic and the building soon descends into violent chaos. >>

It's certainly not a boring film, but it's frequently rather confusing, I can't help but think they were trying to squeeze far too much into two hours, and also stay true to the source material, which did lead to some really bizarre scenes and visuals. In fact I think it'd work far better as a single season series, there's certainly enough going on and many themes to explore.

It's very well filmed, looks great, fab soundtrack too, and the actors are uniformly excellent (Jeremy Irons is in it too), gets a big 1 on the Craster scale and contains the great line 'So which one of you bastards is going to fuck me up the arse then?' (rather disturbingly with a (real) horse in shot that looks like it might be up for the challenge).

Very odd, possibly worth it just for the experience. (Directed by Ben Wheatley who did KILL LIST.)

6.5/10.

I've just watched a film called Nina Forever. It's about a guy who's dead girlfriend appears every time he has sex. She died in a car crash so she's all mangled and leaves blood everywhere but can also interact with the couple doing it. It sounds a lot better than it actually was.

Despite scoring a well deserved 1 on the Craster scale, it was pretty shit. 2.8/10.

I've watched a couple of cheery films so far this week -

Suicide Club - Mainly because it was on offer on Google Play. Low budget Japanese horror stuff but enjoyable, despite it getting bleaker as it went on

We Need To Talk About Kevin - This seems to be quite highly rated, but I wasn't much for it. To me it came across as a slow, predictable film and in an effort to make it more interesting, had most of its scenes jumbled up during editing. Nearly turned it off after 15 minutes and afterwards wish I had.
