Zootopia is an alright movie but I don't think they've fully thought through the metaphor. It's well intentioned but unsuccessful imo.

Disney movies overtly tackling important contemporary socio-political issues is great, but I'm unsure this one holds up to scrutiny.

I don't think the distinction between predators and prey really works as an analogy for race. It borders on scientific racism.

I think for it's intended audience it will plant the seeds of some of the right questions. But it's somewhat confused.

Given that zoolander 1 was a steaming pile, it's hardly a surprise the sequel was too.

Ben Stiller is almost as much of an anti-comedy black hole as Adam Sandler.

Hmmm. Well, I liked the following 42 minutes or so, but the last 3 minutes was a bit of a poor ending.

I don't think it's overthinking it to say it is obviously and deliberately thick with metaphor.

I'm just analyzing it on it's own terms.

There are lots of metaphors within the film, and there are lots of things that look at race and how we interact with people who are 'different'. I don't think that predator/prey are necessarily supposed to be analogous to specific races, just a demonstration of how arbitrary differences can drive people apart.

I thought it worked pretty well.

Hard to Kill exists in a world where it is pretty easy to put a policeman in a coma and kill his family and after seven years he wakes up, sexes Kelly Brick and murderises a man in Chinatown in front of nine billion bicycles and about 50 people. The Chinese mystique is a terrible thing to carry an otherwise disappointing character development plot line in the film. It ends in a pool. Except of the fact that in seven years he grows only a goatee. And everyone dresses like Curio. But listens to cras's soundtrack.

New UK trailer for Ghostbusters actually makes it look like a pretty good film, I'm suddenly far more optimistic than I am after the last couple of trailers.

That actually does look funny and not like the trope-ridden tripe the other trailers were cut to be!

I was talking about this with Zeppo earlier - what is it about the trailer that suddenly causes that change of opinion?

Is it the lack of what I consider to be shitty jokes? Or is it the fact that it uses Ray Parker Jr. more? What does this trailer have that the other one didn't? Or vice versa, as the case may be?

To one of your points there, I will happily say this to any remake/re-imagining/reboot/sequel to any film ever, especially those with particular cult appeal.

JUST PLAY THE FUCKING TUNE. I mostly don't care what you do with the rest of the film, as long as at some point you do your fucking job, and play the fucking tune. At which point I can go "fuck yeah!" and the film is immediately brilliant.

I just don't get the point of remakes. Most are utter shite (IMO) but even those very few that aren't, what's the point?
I suppose I could (sort of) concede stuff like Cape Fear, where the original was in black and white - but a much loved 80s comedy?

Nah, IDGI.

Bad Lieutenant is the best remake.

Werner Herzog had never seen the original but wanted to make a film with a vaguely similar premise, and doing it as a remake was the easiest way to get it funded.

The hills have eyes and Dawn of the Dead remakes are actually excellent. And I even slightly prefer the English remake of The Ring. But yes, mostly are crap, and even these could have used the budget and talent for new ideas.

A glance over this has plenty of decent remakes. The Thing. The Manchurian Candidate. Ocean's Eleven. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. King Kong. The Fly. Let Me In. Insomnia. Assault On Precinct 19 (the 1973 version... a loose remake of Rio Bravo.) The Departed. And loads more.

Where do we stand on "another adaptation? That adds War Of The Worlds, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, etc etc.

Although not a particularly relevant example of what's being discussed, given that it was made by the same director etc. It was more like a second attempt at making the same film.

It was made as a sequel, but they didn't have any of that rights to the first film, so they reshot all the backstory. That doesn't really count

It's a remake.

Also Blues Brothers is a musical.
