Mikkelsen, though, man. He's magnificent.

Agreed, I think most of the recent Bonds have had good villains, but I think he is the best of the bunch. I'd happily let him eat me after I die.

Just watched Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation for the second time, as a comparison for how a spy film should be done.

Why can't the Bond films be more like that?

Spotlight: pretty good stuff. I was worried it would be pretty heavy-going given the subject matter (news reporters investigating a systemic cover up of peadophiles in the Catholic church) but it played out like political/legal detective story and was very engaging. If I had a criticism it would be that the story seemed to end without any real sense of crescendo but it's a true story so they can't really fuck around with the narrative structure too much. It's got a really, really good cast though and it's a pleasure just watching them work to be honest.

:this:

Spotlight was my film this evening and it was superb.

I didn't have a problem with the ending in that I see the story finally getting out was the 'end' in that it was the start of full understanding on the public stage of what had been going on - and as it's fact-based we all know what happened next, the big thing was the story getting out there.

Not a single criticism - I'll go 9.5/10, I could watch films this good every day of the week.

Also, even though it was as Bamba says done in almost a political/legal documentary structure, the power of the tale and how its told does the job for it (and is a credit to how good the film is), such that the closing shots create their own power, nothing else required.

Excellent film. Loved the piano music over the end credits too, normally I'd just go for a piss but I stayed to listen.

Taken 2 is a bad film.

Astonishingly the camera work for the action sequences are even worse than Bourne 2 & 3.

But nothing compares with how rubbish the death of the Big Baddie is, when the back of his head is shoved onto a coat hanger with no foreshadowing that the coat hanger is even there.

And no Holly Vallance? Waste of fucking time then. I might just go and watch some Dead or Alive instead. Or porn. Whatevs.

Fifteen cuts in six seconds, because the hero climbed over a fence.

That's from Taken 3 which, by all accounts, is much worse than the previous two.

Oblivion: meh. There's nothing massively wrong with, and it's certainly engaging enough to start with, but there just feels like there isn't a lot to it somehow. It's definitely got some good ideas and I think it could've been brilliant but somehow in it's current form it's just sort of 'there'.

Garden State: I watched this years ago when it first came out but I'd forgotten how good it is. I mean, it sort of shouldn't be. It's fey and self-indulgent and slightly smug and not much really happens in it, but in spite of all that I just find it captivating somehow and enjoyed every minute of it.

For anyone else wondering why they can't actually find much info about this it's because it's actually called Amnesiac apparently.

I haven't seen it, but reading some of the stuff from Chris Rock's hosting seems like he did an excellent job at the Oscars.

Does anyone outside of the business even care about the Oscars? I was just pondering it because they never seem shut up about it on the breakfast news as though it were a hot topic of conversation up and down the land but despite being quite fond of films generally I don't think I've ever once spoken to anyone or had anyone try to speak to me about who won what.

Did have some fun with the MSQRD app this morning, though:

I would agree, it's one of those things that people might perceive as being important purely because they're told it's important by media outlets. Who are biased because it's an easy way to fill screen time/column inches so of course they love it.

"What we do in Shadows", a low budget New Zealand mockumentary about four vampires sharing a house. Excellent, found myself chuckling throughout.

Not exactly. It's co-written and co-directed by Jermaine Clement, and has Rhys Derby in it, but Bret McKenzie wasn't involved.

That looks fine to me. I'm not super hyped for it, but it's nowhere near the car-crash that some people were expecting.
It's got the right look and feel for a Ghostbusters movie so I'll definitely be going to see it when it's released.

On the upside, this will bring a fresh round of outrage from mewling manchildren all across the world about how their childhood memories are being raped or whatever because the main cost don't have dicks, and that's always invigorating.

I watched this, and I can't really understand it.

Why mention that a team 30 years ago already saved the world if you're going to do a same-plotline remake? Just to remind us it's a remake and that the original still exists? That was confusing.

However, the worst thing appeared to be that all the surnames have been changed.

I am not an imbecile so I don't have a problem with switching the genders for a new Ghostbusters, but they could have tried to pick some funnier women.

Doesn't look very good.

I think just calling it "Ghostbusters" is a strange decision, too.

Yeah that's properly shitty. I have a colleague at work, not much younger than me a keen gamer but never was really interested in politics or anything like that. However he seems to have recently had a political awakening at age 40 via gamergate and MRAs and all that Internet bullshit. Don't know how to deal with it. It's like trying to deprogram someone who's been brainwashed by a cult and I just don't have the time or the energy so I just tell him that I don't want to hear about it.

65,000 of them? Cripes :( That's a lot of organising just to click some Youtube buttons. The film doesn't look very good.

Sorry to hear that, Mark. It sounds like a proper drag having to listen to that all the time. Maybe just say to him that you'd be wary saying things like that at work in case you were pulled up for sexism (though if he has the mindset I have the impression he may have, he may think that 'proves' his idea). Sounds tiresome.

Basically, it's got the theme tune, so it'll be brilliant.

I sat through 10 series of Smallville waiting for that bit at the end where they finally broke into the Superman theme tune.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
