I watched 99 HOMES last night and it was indeed fantastic. Shannon is superb as expected, but the rest of the cast were top-drawer as well. The other main chap, Andrew Garfield, was entirely capable of holding the screen with Shannon, also OLDISH LAURA DERN who caused me sexual confusion because I will always associate her with THOSE SCENES in Wild At Heart. She doesn't seem to have gone down the plastic woman route that is common in America so it was nice to see woman in her late-forties looking like a woman in her late-forties.

Anyway, it's a really good film. If you know about the sub-prime crisis and the shit that all the banks were up to there's nothing really that surprising in there (see also MARGIN CALL), but that doesn't stop it being a superb piece of cinema.

9/10. Laura Dern, still would.

So, Spectre, then. Here are my super-spoilery thoughts.

I've been mulling it over and I'm afraid to say that it ultimately
left me somewhat dissastisfied. It just all felt rather bloodless.
Despite its many flaws Quantum of Solace at least had a very driven
Bond glowering his way through the hired hands of a shadowy
organisation that felt threateningly sinister owing to how little we
knew about it. Much of the action in the film may have been bungled,
and it may have had a muddled script, but there were enough stand-out
moments in the film to make me think that it has been judged a little
too harshly by critics. (The opera house, the finale in the remote
little complex leading to a very cruel moment by Bond with the oil
can.)

This film... well, Spectre revealed itself and... it just didn't seem
all that immense an organisation. It didn't even seem to have any
definable goals. Neither did Blofeld. Okay, so he's trying to take
over the world's network of intelligence. He's willing to kill women
and children in his chaotic bomb attacks (which play so distantly and
quietly that it's hard to get worked up in the film about them) and
he's got a secret base. But what's his actual plan once he has access
to the world's security? Is it more sinister cartel stuff? Because it
feels as if they're kind of doing that already with their 'we're
everywhere' stuff if we're being asked to believe that they are behind
Quantum as well. Well, at least we've got sinister Blofeld, eh? The
man in the movie who's reign of terror saw the deaths of... er... who
would stop at nothing in his destruction of... um... who's evil brain
drill twice pierced Bond's skull and caused him to... ah.

The man who breathtakingly achieved a scheduled demolition slightly
ahead of schedule and then crashed in his own helicopter, before being
arrested?

There's something faintly laughable in poor old Blofeld. He tries to
torture Bond to death. Bond simply blasts his way out of there with an
explosive watch which, if he had indeed been following Bond all that
time, he should really have suspected was a Q department product. He
builds a gorgeous little base in a crater somewhere. Bond blows it up.
He gets his computer programmers to infiltrate the world's security
networks. Bond's friends pull the plug. He tries to kill Bond with the
old exploding building trick. Bond simply runs out of it. He tries to
run away. Bond shoots his chopper down. With a handgun. From about 500
yards away.

Wait a minute, how did Blofeld plan to use his infiltration software
if all his computer programmers had been blown up? Wouldn't the
destruction of his surveilance base put the kibbotz on his scheme? Why
did his surveilance base have big explosive oil and gas pipework
everywhere? (Also, Bond was so close to that Austin Powers gag when he
bursts in and fires three shots from his gun and six bad guys fall
down.)

Oh well, at least we have a smouldering romance between Bond and Lea
Seydoux. She hates him and his world of guns! No, wait, beating up
Dave Batista gets her kinda hot, forget that. They're totally an item
now. Oddly, there seemed way more chemisty in his scenes with Monica
Bellucci. They really should have run with that instead. (Someone else
Blofeld entirely fails to kill, incidently. 'Go see my buddy, Leiter,
he'll protect you.' 'Oh okay, I certainly hope that nothing will
happen to me in the sixteen or so hours it takes me alone and
unprotected to get over there. Phew.'

Hmm. Well, at least we have Bond spitting and snarling and
relentlessly pursuing the architect of his recent tragedies. "It was
me, Bond. It was always me." To which Bond responds silently with a
look of, er, "Oh, okay. Good to know," and proceeds to carry on
exactly as before. He doesn't even really seem to hate Blofeld, just
views him with a degree of contempt. Which is a jim-dandy Bond
reaction normally, if the script didn't keep awkwardly shoe-horning in
lines from Blofeld about how it was really personal. (To which Bond
responds with a faint air of bafflement as if he's got some stalking
secret admirer and he can't figure out why.)

Oddly, C seemed the greater menace in all his bureaucracy, even though
he's just a hired hand. I was really hoping for an awesome bluff and
for it to turn out that HE was Blofeld, not Waltz, who really needed
more lift-traps and failure-intolerance to make an impression.Think
about it, how much more awesome would that have been? C'mon, you've
got Moriatry there. I was hugely expecting it, for Waltz to really be
an ostentatious lacky fooling Bond while C did something really evil
back in London. But no. Gngh.

And where were the other 00 agents? Were they tamely surrendering too?
You would have thought they could have helped out in a pickle, though
heaven knows Bond handled it all tidily and quickly enough.

Also, who builds a headquarters for secret intelligence out of glass
in central London, glass that isn't even shatter-proof?

Good things: Mexico. Ridiculous driving a plane bit. Dave Batista
fight. Q and M being droll. Moneypenny is very cute. Set design. Some
winning gags. Bond is still kinda fun.

Bad things: Blofeld failing evil school. Unbelievably clumsy
retro-conning to ape Marvel's bigger picture movie format.
Insufficient stakes. Inexplicably exploding bases. Stupid boneheaded
even-worse-than-Roger-Moore plot logic.

Verdict: It's practically Star Trek: Into Darkness all over again. Two and a half out of Five. And only just.

I have never heard of or seen this: I shall (get Russell to) look it up tonight. Of course, the best film that Peter Falk is in is The Princess Bride.

Also, do you not think that Peter Falk has the most lovely face? He is just so kindly-looking. He just has such a warmth in his smile and his eyes (yes, I know that he has (had?) a false eye, before someone can't help themselves from pointing this out) but he just had that brightness in the lines about his eyes from a many thousand smiles. Also, people should go bak to having hair like a 35-45 year old Peter Falk. Proper hair.

Watching No Escape and wow it is profoundly racist and implausible.

Looks like I was right and it's not actually shot in Cambodia, it was shot in Chiang Mai in Thailand, but people are speaking in Khmer and they have dressed it up to look like Cambodia.

I don't have a problem with the notion that there could be riots in the streets, or even civil war, in Cambodia, that plausible anywhere. But it would take a degree of escalation. I'd find it pretty hard to see it happen to the extent that the majority of the population went on a murderous rampage literally at the drop of a hat. It's astonishing.

A (relatively) swanky hotel would not just let an American go for a walk about town if there was tension to the extent that this kind of situation could arise.

The entire movie is literally framed like a zombie movie except with foreigners instead of zombies. I saw the trailers but thought there might actually be more to it than that.

Edit: If people want to see Cambodia on screen, may I recommend "City of Ghosts". First Hollywood movie that is both set and shot here (plenty of others have used it as a stand in for Thailand of visa versa), a fairly nice movie about a shady but ultimately likable dude who has to flee America because an insurance fraud he's been running has collapsed. He has a little bit of adventure, catches up with some associates, and then they get into some trouble. Pretty simple but a fairly accurate (albeit outdated now) depiction of Cambodia that is far more reflective of my experiences (except for the plot!).

Another obvious one is the first Tomb Raider movie, but that's just using some of the beautiful ancient temples as locations for Tombs.

No Escape is great! I did say it was basically a survival horror film with revolutionaries instead of zombies.

Not sure what's racist about it either TBH. The revolution took place in Cambodia so the revolutionaries were Cambodian.

An otherwise peaceful and stable country with no major political tension turned into a warzone without warning? That's not my understanding of what happened in Rwanda.

Obviously a generation ago Cambodia was a very different story, but it's been politically stable for around 20 years. It is not on the brink of civil war.

I've watched a film and it was brilliant.

Presumably, given all the setup of the theme throughout the trailer, it's because Batman thinks Superman's a dangerously over-powered alien with his own agenda who answers to no one and needs to be reigned in.

Note that my reply there was based on the previous trailer which I only watched the other day and which spends a lot of time showing people mulling over whether Superman should be trusted or not. That new one doesn't go into that quite as much.

Anyway, I wasn't paying any attention to this because I wasn't expecting much after the last Superman film. Due to this thread though I watched the previous trailer(s) a couple of days ago and then the new one just there and I'm actually quite excited about it now. Henry Cavill's glowering Superman makes a bit more sense given the setup here and I've got a soft spot for Ben Affleck generally, plus I do like the design of Batman they're going for here. I'm still quite worried they're be chucking so much stuff into a single film that it'll be totally incoherent though. I mean they're introducing Batman, Lex Luther, Wonderwoman and Doomsday characters plus not only setting up the conflict between Superman and Batman but (presumably) resolving that to leave them on the same side. Giving all that room enough to breathe and be credible in a single film isn't trivial. But, I'm a lot more hopeful for the film now than I have been.

Well, yeah, there's always been an amount of hypocrisy baked into Batman's superiority complex and I imagine (hope!) it'll be acknowledged in the film as it generally is in the comics. In the comics especially he basically 'decides' who is or isn't allowed to be a cape in Gotham based entirely on his own criteria. Which people grumble about often enough, pointing out that no one has ever sanctioned his activity so where the fuck does he get off doing it to others? With the implicit answer always basically being, "Fuck you, I'm Batman."

It's been a while, but in the comics, isn't a big source of conflict between the two of them also that Superman wants to be an agent of the government, but Batman wants to be entirely apart from the government, and protecting people from the government should he need to?

Edit: an idea that is explored far better in Watchmen than in any of the DC comics I've read.

If you look up and can't see the moon, then you just assume you're not looking in the right direction. However, if you look up and there's only 30% of the moon there, then... it's probably just a crescent moon or something. Sorry, not sure what my point was.

Ben Affleck as Batman? What could possibly be bad about that?

I had a graphic novel, think it was called The Dark Knight or something, that had as the latter part a conflict between Batman and Superman, with Superman being a Reagan stooge. It was very entertaining.

But then it didn't have Ben Affleck in it.

Red-Band trailer for new Shane Black directed film starring Ryan Gosling & Russel Crowe, "THE NICE GUYS".

He directed the so-so Iron-Man 3, and wrote the first Lethal Weapon movie, but my fave movie of his is his directorial debut "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang".

This looks similar to that latter movie (ie. lots of fun) :

Shane Black writing and directing, Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling acting, in a violent 70s vibe sort of thing - SOLD.

* Yeah I know trailers are the spawn of the devil these days, but with the combo listed above, I really couldn't resist. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is epically good, that alone makes me very interested. (And Shane Black's other credits, and the fact that Crowe and Gosling are fantastic, and so on.)

This was a forkin corker: Bone Tomahawk.

Now, ignore the rubbish title and let me say these things to you in the form of characters that form words which have meaning when collated linearly in a sentence:

Kurt Russell is a Sheriff in a Western.

Now, does that sound like the greatest thing ever? It is. Not only that, but the small cast of blokes and lasses is top notch. Now how about this:

Indians.

Oh shit, they went there. A western with Indians and Cowboys and a Sheriff. Let me round this off with the following:

Scalping.

BOOM! Oh just fucking watch it. It was absolutely incredible throughout; absolutely edge of the seat what the hell will happen next kinda stuff. If anyone and I mean "anyone" doesn't put this in their top ten films of 2015 then I'll send a strongly worded PM to you about how much of a silly bugger you are.

Yesterday we watched Home Alone. I've not seen it since I was about ten.

Michael Caulkin is not cute (in manner) or funny. He is a brat, and he can't act. His character and the way he reads his lines is really, really annoying.

The rest of the film is probably fine (maybe... Perhaps), but he's awful.

We watched Santa Claus: The Movie instead.

Opening scene - the reindeers lay down to die because of the blizzard. I can see where the inspiration for Scrooged's "The Night The Reindeer Died" came from now.

The Night Before: a comedy film starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt that also has Tracey Morgan, Michael Shannon and Lizzie Caplan; that can't be a complete load of shit surely? Hah, ye of little faith, of course it's a load of pish! It's the same by-the-numbers US comedy that Seth Rogen seems to be able to magically transform every single film into just by appearing in it. There were a couple of chuckles in it but really it was mostly pointless.
Salt: Angelina Jolie as is she/isn't she 'traitor' secret agent. Some of the chase sequences went on too long and the 'twist' was a bit obvious but generally it was coherent and tightly put together. Good stuff.

There's a few things at the cinema I quite fancy for the first week in a while so tonight I'll probably go to either Black Mass, Krampus or Bridge of Spies. I thought Victor Frankenstein might be worth a look as I do like me some James McAvoy but apparently it's pish. Also, everything about Steve Jobs looks great (the director, the writer, the cast; all stellar stuff) except the fact that it's about fucking Steve Jobs, so on balance I doubt I'll watch it.
