There's an interesting ongoing thread over on the CivilWarTalk forum where someone involved in the production of 'Glory' describes his experiences. Worth checking out if you're a fan of this film (personally, I think it's one of the greatest war films of all time): http://civilwartalk.com/threads/twenty- ... ory.95319/

Mrs B and I watched The Monument Men at the weekend and came away pretty unimpressed. It wasn't terrible or anything but it just didn't do very much and seemed like a massive waste of such a good cast. Probably still worth watching at home some time but don't bother going to the cinema if you were considering it.

In other news, the new Captain America film looks fucking brilliant. I wasn't bothered about the first one and it was a bit campy cartoony (which is fair enough given the source material) but the new one looks proper and certainly the Winter Soldier story from the comics is a solid basis if they adapt it right. Especially as there's no hint in the trailer of who the Winter Solider is so hopefully they're trying to keep that as a bit of a surprise reveal in the film. I know it's easily accessible information if you look for it and all but a trailer in this day and age that doesn't just blow the whole plot in three minutes is, sadly, something to be appreciated.

We saw that last week, I'd agree about it not necessarily being a cinema film but it's a nice enough movie. I think the casting director did an excellent job; it wouldn't be half as successful without the cast, who all did great jobs in their roles. It's not an epic, that's for sure but it's a story I'd never heard of and it was interesting to see. It was an element of the war I'd never really considered, and parts of it were terribly tragic. Whenever I watch films about the war, it's always astonishing to me that something like that could happen in such recent history.

Anchorman 2 is a solid sequel (assuming you liked the daftness of the first one).

Not quite as good as the original but pretty damn funny regardless.

I went to the cinema to watch it with the kids, which was totes awesome, but would really like to watch it in peace and quiet without having to supply a commentary, when the DVD comes out.

Why are you taking your kids to see a foul-mouthed film like Anchorman 2 ?

I'm not a massive will ferrell fan at all, so haven't seen either of the Anchorman films. Are they worth watching then?

Anchorman has been weighed down (like an anchor!) by the incredible cultural influence it has had over the last decade or so. Like how a modern audience may think Seinfeld isn't funny.

I'm not sure how I would find the film, watching it after seeing so many films that were influenced by it first.

At release it was an incredible, incredible film.

I watched it for the first time a few weeks back. It had a couple of funny moments (the fight scene was pretty good) but wasn't particularly memorable or hilarious.

I remember finding it unfunny in 1995(?)

The first Mighty Boosh series set in the zoo was excellent. It decreased in quality over the next two, but was still ok.

Little Britain was pretty good for the first two series, but was fucking atrocious when it moved to BBC1 for the third.

Seinfeld has been reasonably funny when I've seen snippets, but I can't say I've gone out of my way to watch it.

I thought it was some kind of Beex rule that you couldn't say The Mighty Boosh was funny or you'd get banned. I certainly remember a lot of shouting about it when I was still in lurk mode.

For the record I think it's really funny, we even went to the live show which was also very good despite being mostly rehashed stuff from the TV series.

Interestingly, I do remember catching a random out of context 60 second snippet of it once when channel surfing and thinking it the most unfunny stupid bollocks I'd ever watched so I wonder what changed my opinion?

I don't mind mindless action movies. I love a good time of suspending my disbelief and just watching shit blow up.

That said, Fast & Furious 6 is by far, BY FAR, the stupidest film I have ever seen.

Watched The Numbers Station last night. I was hoping for something in the vein of Identity or something, one of those excellent, niche thrillers that Cusack sometimes does. But no, it was clearly something he was doing as a favour for a mate whose child had got into directing. Utter balls.

Rewatched 'Event Horizon' last night, and it's still a tight, effective, pretty gruesome haunted house in space flick. (The CGI holds up reasonably well too.)

Rumours abound that the original 130 minute cut which featured far more character development and some pretty off-the-scale gore has been unearthed (albeit only on VHS), so we might get to see that at some point.

Paramount originally chucked a fit at the director's preferred cut and had him cut the fucker to pieces and also remove a lot of the more extreme gore.

What is it with you and gore, AE?

I watched Seven Pyschopaths last night ( great film) but had to look away a the throat slitting.

I can deal with OTT gore like limbs and heads and bodies being gibbed, but more realistic low level stuff just turns my stomach.

If the context of the film justifies it then I don't like it when a film shies away from being true to its theme. (The new Die Hard films for example, you can't be a proper Die Hard film with a PG-13.)

In Event Horizon the premise is that the ship has travelled to hell and back, and then torments the rescue crew with visions of hell through the prism of their own fears and guilt until they go kill-crazy and start wanting to gouge their own eyes out. (Having managed to kill the original crew in a orgy of obscene depravity and violence.)

On balance, I'd say that merits a fair whack of gore.

Then the next day I might watch something like WALL-E or Up, or Remains Of The Day (all certificate U), and enjoy them thoroughly, despite there being nothing in any of those films that's considered unsuitable for a five year old.

Context, innit.
