12 years a slave was harrowing, moving and important - but I kept being jarred from the film by the fact that Zimmerman basically used the exact same music from inception in the film.

Most composers have a signature style. Hans Zimmer isn't the worst offender by far, I can tell a Danny Elfman soundtrack usually within about 10 seconds of hearing it.

John Williams and Alan Silvestri were just as bad, not sure if they still do the same shit now.

My many hours listening to both of them on Spotify over the last few months tells me that Williams is far more varied in style than Zimmerman.

Really? I can spot a Williams score a mile off.

Zimmer's soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean is massively different to any of his other stuff, though.

Only cos he's hamstrung in copying the themes from Klaus whatsit's from the first one.

That said, he still ripped off a load of his own scores in that one.

Really? What was the last film you saw where you didn't know Williams did the score and you went "oh, that's a Williams score, so it is"?

I recently watched some Harry Potter film and it was glaringly obvious even though I didn't know until his name came up on the credits.

You didn't know before watching a Potter film that Williams scored it. Right.

Anwyay. There's a difference between a recognisable style, such as Williams may have, and wholesale repeating themes, like Zimmerman does.

Nope. I knew he did Star Wars, Superman and Indiana Jones, and that's about it. I'm not a massive film watcher, but every time I hear a score and I have an inkling it's John Williams, it always is.

I'm sure he (Zimmer) is credited as the composer in the movie, but he was only the producer.

I think Williams is pretty recognisable but I don't think I've seen many films he's scored where it wasn't perfectly obvious. Say because it was a Spielberg film and the music was orchestral. But I think this sort of thing probably depends a lot on how much you are into something. e.g. music in general. You'll probably pick up on things subconsciously and recognise aspects of a particular style more readily than anyone who's never been involved in making music.

Last Night I watched "Carriers" which I didn't think was very realistic, and didn't really like the characters, but I watched to the end.

The Night before I watched a film that I really quite enjoyed, but can't recall now, and it's not in my watched list on netflix/love film, or deleted on my skybox. Pretty sure I didn't watch a bluray. Did I dream I watched a film?

Hmmm, unless I watched it directly on demand, not sure if I can see what I watched from there?

I watched "Warm Bodies" which I really rather liked.

If you don't know anything about it, it's about a zombie dude that has a crush on a living girl, and his attempts to have a relationship with her.

I really liked Pacific Rim. Big robots fighting monsters with a watchable cast.

I really enjoyed that film, in fact I've seen it twice. Infinitely better than The Road, in any case.

"This is 40" was kinda depressing and annoying, with a few good comedy moments. Wouldn't really recommend, though the female lead is gorgeous and scores on the Craster scale.

And the soundtrack has an awesome Fiona Apple song on it.

Babylon AD - exactly what you might imagine Children of Men would have been like if it had been a Vin Diesel 'blockbuster' instead of what it is.

American Hustle is a bad movie.

Netflix does this to you and I can't figure out how to switch them on. Although for John Carter the plot was so simple that we just watched it and it was fairly obvious what the aliens were on about and somehow, this made the movie more enjoyable.

I know, but I couldn't be arsed watching a substandard film twice

Been watching a few documentaries on Netflix lately. Last night, inspired by our current imminent nuclear obliteration I watched Radio Bikini, a 1988 film about the bomb tests on Bikini Atoll. A very straightforward telling of the story, mostly just contemporary films cut together (early nineties techno fans should recognise this bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IE06ECcimb8) with no narration save for a couple of interviewees, the leader of the displaced tribe and one of the surviving armed forces personnel sent there to watch. Incredible what scant regard the US government showed for its own men let alone the islanders. Reading up a bit afterwards things really haven't got any better for the tribe. The US have pretty much just fucked them over for decade after decade, admitting their guilt but doing nothing about it. Anyway it's a great film, as you'd expect from the subject matter, awesome and horrifying in equal measure.

Yes, often we'll watch something on Netflix, and then one of the characters starts speaking in Spanish, but for far too long, and we're like "hmm, this should probably be subbed now."

That's incredibly fucking shoddy.

We did the entire second or third series of Breaking Bad like this. We thought it was intentional at first, but in the end I just looked up the dialogue to see what was going on.

That said, it was on a less reputable place than Netflix.

Netflix and subtitles do seem to be uneasy bedfellows, particularly on foreign films. Watching a subbed japanese film and they stopped for about 3 minutes.

Fortunately, the language used during that gap was fairly simple. Same thing happened for a korean(?) film. I don't understand korean (or maybe it was chinese, not sure)

Think it happened in a german film too, but may be imagining that.
