Warner Bros. did the Lego movie.

Disney have the magic touch when it comes to making money. The Marvel films , Animated stuff they do in house and now the Star wars films.

The last Thor film was mediocre to say the least but even that made 650 Million Dollars.

LEGO movie was ace, but Frozen was also very good and Big Hero 6 was ace.

Planes 2 wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't have seen it without child, and miles behind the above three.

I was all over the place earlier. I've no idea what I read.

The Theory of a Everything was a lovely film, I laughed, I cried, I enjoyed seeing one of my favourite Chelsea players on the big screen.

Rewatched 'The Running Man' a couple of nights ago, (it's on Netflix USA but not UK for some reason), mustn't have seen that film for twenty years or more.

I wasn't expecting much, just a bit of fun 80s cheese with typical Arnie violence, and whilst it almost delivered, I couldn't help but think it was simply a load of crap as the credits rolled.

The best bit was definitely María Conchita Alonso in her underwear, although things did not develop into a 1 on the Craster scale, unfortunately.

4/10 - It ain't no Commando or Predator, that's for sure.

Are you mad? The Running Man is one of Arnie's best (although not necessarily because of Arnie.)

Not a patch on the book, granted, but they're very different beasts.

Went to see Kingsman: The Secret Service the other day. Terrific movie, great performances from all of the cast and although the plot is tired and has been done many times before, it worked very well. Great performance from Taron Egerton too as the unlikely hero.

I am Number Four - like someone explained a monster of the week Buff episode to a drunk person who then made a 2 hour film about it. Badly. Has Quinn from Glee in it, and a beagle.

I realise it's already had a fair bit of loving earlier in this thread but I finally got round to watching Gone Girl this evening.

Holy shit, that's a damn good film. Didn't put a step wrong in any direction, I didn't know anything about it going in so it was a veritable treat of dark mystery and intrigue.



Solid 9/10, maybe even 9.5/10 - Nearly two and a half hours long (which is usually into annoyance territory for me), but it had me riveted from start to finish.

I did enjoy that film. Barney Stinson's best outing.

I loved the bleakness of it. I also knew nothing about it going in and the fact this was a major Hollywood film that basically said, "Trust no one; relationships are terrible." was brilliant.

Total. Boy film.

Note: not because I actually believe that of relationships. Entirely because in a world where every fucking ending to every film ever has to be the fucking 'happy' ending because test audiences shit their stupid pants at the idea of a genuine character-driven outcome I see this a victory for interestingly fucked-up narratives everywhere.

Boy. Film.

That, to be fair, is one of your mum's few valid criticisms.

The comedy effect's fine, but the fact that a film where relationships are terrible is, to you, 'A Boy Film' is pretty terrifying. What the hell kind of world do you live in man?

That was part of what blind-sided me about it, it's just so unusual for a major Hollywood film to stick to its guns and see the story out to a conclusion that's logical in its own universe, even if that's bleak and dark, so when I thought I could see where it was going part of me was like, 'Nah, that's not going to happen, is it?'

(Thinking about it of course, Fincher has form in this area, the story on 'Se7en' is that Pitt and Fincher threatened to walk unless they could have the ending they wanted, the studio fancied an ending where Mills' wife's head isn't in the box and/or he doesn't at least kill John Doe so that Doe doesn't 'win' - and Fincher + Pitt were having none of it.)

So back to Gone Girl, it was clever, well written, directed, and acted - an solid, strong character driven piece, it 'got' me in the first few minutes and didn't let me go until the credits rolled, and stayed with me for a little while afterwards. I fucking hate it when films cop out in the last few minutes and switch to an ending that clearly doesn't belong, or add on a little coda that does a ridiculous happily ever after.

It's not unique of course, see also Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone, Narc (off the top of my head). Although Narc kept running out of money so that's not exactly a major Hollywood film. (NOTE If you've never seen Narc then watch it, you'll never see Ray Liotta or Jason Patric on better form.)

Indeed, but Hollywood is notoriously arse when it comes to using a book as 'inspiration' and just making up the rest to suit them.

In Gone Girl's case it also helps that the author of the book was the screenwriter for the film and worked very closely with Fincher.

Merry Frigging Christmas was dire too.

I saw Chappie and Focus yesterday. Chappie was a bit all over the place in tone and never really delved into any of its ideas fully (oh and the thing that crops up toward the end involving consciousness seemed a little bit silly). Still aside from that I still found it quite enjoyable. Die Antwoord did the acting thing quite well but considering what they had to do it wasn't hugely demanding I suppose.

Focus was slightly less good but was perfectly fine. It's a pleasant con man movie that passes the 100 minutes it lasts quite adequately without really getting boring. Never hits heights of being super exciting either but if you particularly like Will Smith (surely everyone does right? He's a pretty hard guy to dislike I feel) and shows like Hustle then there should be enough to keep you entertained.

I've got absolutely no interest in anything to do with Chappie apart from Die Antwoord so I'll probably watch it at some point just for them.

So after Chappie and Elysium, it's already safe to assume that district 9 was a happy accident?

Elysium was a decent film I thought, not District 9 good, but still a decent enough flick.

Sharlto Copley makes an awesome unhinge baddie too.

Short Circuit is where it's at for robot films. Or Battle Angel Alita.

Elyisum was fine but it was a premise that had tonnes of scope for exploring the socio-economic/political implications of it's magic future technology, and even hinted at doing so in plenty of places, but ultimately shied away from them in favour of being a pretty decent dumb action movie. It felt like it was actively avoiding any humanity.

Except for the part of the "sci fi". I have no idea why Elysium couldn't be labeled science fiction. Because of the "science" part?

Genre definitions is a boring discussion, but for me, the most interesting sci fi is stuff that uses magic futuristic space technology to express something about humanity. Which I think District 9 did, but Elysium only hinted at.

Best film I've seen since Birdman? Penguins of Madagascar.

I hated Madagascar but, boy-o-boy, this has some reet good laughs in it. Very surprising.
