Not only is the premise bollocks and predicated on an urban myth but the execution of the concept is like a B movie version of one of the shitter Matrix movies.

Oh and at the beginning there's some of the most hamfisted "LOOK AT THIS IMAGERY. HERE. LOOK AT IT" which is then dropped because Luc Besson seems to have realised it's fucking stupid.

Oh and the dialogue is so bad not even Morgan Freeman can deliver it with any conviction.

I went to see it with a mate that I owed a favour because I'd seen Guardians of the Galaxy with someone else. He now owes me a gold Rolls Royce.

I'm over halfway through, and Edge of Tomorrow is a bit good so far.

I saw Before I Go To Sleep this week. It wasn't very good. Unless you like to watch Nicole Kidman snivel and whimper for 90 minutes. Also features Nicole Kidman recording herself on a camera that is turned off.

Then I saw Million Dollar Arm which was cheesy and obvious (and based on a true story!). It was satisfying but maybe could be accused of casual racism and white saviourism. Still I think it didn't mean any harm and was just a bit of fluff really.

I thought it was only OK. Not a patch of Groundhog Day or Source Code.

Having watched to the end, I agree with Lewie also.

Really bugged me that (unless I missed it) they never said what would happen if he didn't die. What if he simply went and hid somewhere safe for a few days?

I don't think Tom Cruise was awful in it, but probably would have enjoyed it more with someone else in his role.

The whole setup and structure of it wasn't all that interesting tbh.

I think this kind of story where it is repeating the same actions over and over again work a bit better in a small confined location, be it a small town gripped by a blizzard, or a train bound for explosion. The possibility space of "A huge battle across Europe" has a bit too much scope for "Wait why didn't he try one of the many alternatives available to him?".

I thought they did - he would keep the ability to reset the day, but the day he can reset is only the one he's in - so if he hid until the next day the entire human invasion force would have be wiped out on the beaches and he wouldn't be able to undo it.

Ah. Possible I missed that detail.

Watched Only God Forgives at the weekend. It's very slow moving and, as such, the story's pretty lightweight but it's incredibly pretty with the lighting and angles of every shot obviously having been much considered. Also, I was about halfway through before I even realised it was Kristin Scott Thomas playing the mental crime family matriarch so that was an amusing surprise. Although technically nothing like Drive it shares a subdued atmosphere with it in parts so perhaps that'll inform whether you fancy it or not. Recommended if you're in the mood for something moodily gorgeous with bursts of violence.

Heh, oh yeah, and I attempted to watch the second Resident Evil film. Ahahahaha, what an utter pile of shit. It got shut off about half an hour in which is very rare for me as my tolerance for shit films is pretty high.

Finally got round to watching Guardians of the Galaxy. It's a bit good, innit?

Really? I always thought that was the best one out of the lot.

That's a depressing comment on the franchise if it's true.

The first and second were pretty watchable. The third was okayish, but wouldn't have paid for it. By the time they hit the 3d-a-rama of the fourth and subsequent ones, they were pish.

I watched that Guardians of the Galaxy. It was ok but I couldn't understand why it's so favourably received on here. Maybe it's because I've never heard of the comic or summats. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed t, but after the comments on here I was expecting it to be filled with hilarious lines throughout. Maybe I was expecting it to be like Airplane! but, obviously, it wasn't.

Maybe I was just sick of kiddies films being about some bleeding orb of destiny or some shit...

I've never read or even particularly heard of Guardians of the Galaxy. And it was acebest.

I read and loved the comics run the film is based on and definitely enjoyed the film but was slightly disappointed as the hype train had oversold it somewhat.

Watched 'Found' last night, it's a bit odd.

It's a sort of coming-of-age film told through the eyes of the brother of a serial killer.

In the main there isn't really much in the way of the gore, but there's a 'film within a film' halfway through that's genuinely quite hard to watch, and I sat through A Serbian Film.

Also, whilst the ending rape/slaughter is pretty much played off-screen, you know exactly what's going on and the audio alone is disturbing enough.

It got banned in Australia until some 7 minutes (!) were cut out of it, (I'd guess that's the entirety of the film within a film segment), the BBFC have passed it 18 with just 4 seconds of compulsory cuts, namely - 'A cut was required to remove sight of a murderer's erect penis, during a scene of sadistic sexualised violence and threat'. (I snagged the uncut version but I can't imagine the four seconds of a blood-soaked stiffy make much difference to the overall vibe.)

Thing is, it's quite an interesting and thoughtful film in the main, with some lovely shots and use of music, and the acting ain't half bad either.

At 1h42m it's not overly long, I'd give it 7/10 and a tentative recommendation if you think you can stomach a few minutes of truly gruesome horror.

So I watched the new X-Men film and I've only one question that's narking me: didn't Professor X die in X-Men 3 when he was blown to bits by mental-Jean or am I remembering wrong?

I watched it too. Really enjoyed it for the most part. I liked the tone, I thought they managed integrating the two strands of the films really well, and I quite liked how they used a few of the characters, and there was some really entertaining moments.

There is nothing Tom Cruise can't and won't utterly destroy, so I am dubious to say the least.

Edge of Tomorrow is definitely quite good.

I saw The Guest last week. It took a while to really get going but had a superb soundtrack and was decidedly preposterous near the end.

I also saw Pride which was utterly utterly brilliant. Laughed. Cried. Felt triumphant. Possibly best film this year.

Watched Bad Neighbours last night.

Seth Rogen is not exactly stretching himself, but it was funny in places and my wife enjoyed the baby related comedy parts. Worth a look.

He may be a total loony, but a poor actor he most certainly is not.

Really? I think he's a bit rubbish mostly. I honestly can't say he has ever made me feel even the slightest empathy for any character. The only times when I've thought he was ok was those rare occasions when he plays the bad guy.

He is fine, but he keeps getting cast in roles that require a more "everyman" actor, which he is not.

He's better either taking the piss out of himself, or being a snobby sleazeball.

Or flying a F-14A Tomcat.

Transformers: Age of Extinction is jostling with Transformers 1, 2 & 3 as one of the worst movies ever made.

It's utterly redundant of any good parts. Yes, even Grimlock, who is never referred to as Grimlock and never says "Me Grimlock, me smash".

Just dreadful.

But most of all, he's good at running. Does he runs a lot on Edge of tomorrow?

Also what was the deal with the 17 year old dating a 20 year old and discussing ways around the U.S.' statutory rape laws? I just don't know what they were thinking.

I still contend that Transformers 1 was a good movie.

Can't defend the others, though.

Watched 'Stake Land' this evening, available on Netflix UK so need to do US site shenanigans.

It's a post-apocalyptic vampire tale made with a budget of just $600K (NO REALLY DON'T GIVE UP YET) and by crikey it's a really solid flick. (Critically well received too if you check the usual review aggregation sites.)

Strong likeable goodies you want to win, nasty baddies (vampire zombies, cool!), and ZOMG HORROR maybe the real terror is the crueller aspects of human nature itself!

Punches massively above its weight (it doesn't feel like a cheapy at all), comes in at a wonderfully judged 98 minutes, and once again really amazes me with what gets passed as a 15 these days. (Contains brief scenes of baby-eating.)

Cracking film, 8/10.

Films I watched last night and tonight :

NOVEMBER MAN :
Action thriller with Pierce Brosnan as a spy brought out of retirement for one last job (well sort of - has that general vibe anyway).
Not bad, not good, gets by on Brosnan's charismatic performance.
Passed the time ok, wouldn't watch it again.
6/10.

SIN CITY - A DAME TO KILL FOR :
Absolutely loved the original and this is an inferior sequel.
It's still worth a watch though. It looks great (exactly like the first film - and that's fine by me) and has a mix of old characters from the first film and some solid new additions (also, Eva Green nude is never a bad thing).
The stories are just far less interesting though.
Still, I found it fairly entertaining overall. 7/10 (original gets a 9/10).
