It'll be interesting to see what they do with the forthcoming Dredd web series. I think it may suit a series more than it will suit a film.

Anyway I saw Maze Runner today. It's very post Hunger Games with a touch of Lord of the Flies. It's also a bit Cube for Kids. Something about it rubbed me up the wrong way. Probably just that this the third Hunger Games alike I've seen this year (Divergent, The Giver) and none of the actors really had much presence. Utterly inconsequential and probably best off missed. Bored.

Another upvote for Edge of Tomorrow from me, which I have just finished watching.

A fine example of a good Hollywood film, where they chuck a load of money at awesome special effects and action sequences and a top name star BUT still remember to include a compelling story and characters you care about.

And I re-iterate what I said earlier, Tom Cruise is a fine leading man who's got some proper acting chops and you want to buy into him, however much of the crazies he might have in real life.

Great film, a solid 8/10, in fact I'll go 8.5/10.

Singham!

Amazing.

Any action movie with comedy sound effects, awesome fight scenes, several song and dance routines, and a hero who fights corruption and murder via the means of corruption and murder.

What's not to love?

Singham!

Watched The Grand Budapest Hotel last night. Surprisingly excellent. I've seen a few Wes Anderson movies before and was entertained, buy the style and whimsy was always a bit overwhelming, but this was more like Wes Anderson does The Coen Brothers.

I don't think the handful a year that have been released up to this point can reasonably be called overkill; but some of the stuff on that list is scraping the barrel a little and having ten (!) films coming out in 2017 is a bit much.

As long as the quality remains high, I say bring them on. Comic book films were largely terrible for so long, let's revel in this golden age!

Which itself is a Battle Royale alike. I don't mean that to take away from The Hunger Games, it's a good platform to explore human psychology, human non-romantic (and romantic) relationships and acts of desperation with, but as you seem to be saying, similar concepts can perhaps only be explored a certain number of times before they start to homogenise.

There's a balance here though because they'll only remain profitable as long as the general public, and not just us geeks, are interested in paying to see them. If all the various rights holders start flooding the market with superhero films to get their piece of the pie then, even if the quality remains high, people will get bored with them so profits will drop and the entire genre will get canned. If Hollywood could be trusted to not attempt to milk the shit out of this and then drop the entire thing at the first sign of trouble it would be fine, but they totally can't.

I think I've got pretty much completely bored of superhero films now. I used to be able to watch them and be mostly reasonably entertained for the duration but now I just find my mind wandering and frequently will just fall asleep. Just don't care what happens. All the endless back story stuff, the prequels, the cameos it's just a massive load of bollocks and a cheap way to add depth to characters which doesn't really work and isn't necessary in decent films.

I watched Gone Girl on Sunday. It was very enjoyable, but I can't really work out if it was good or not, due to reading the book the week before and it being 99% the same. I can't work out in my head if it is good because the book is good, or if it actually stands up on its own as a film.

I don't think there's a single word of truth in anything you've said there. As far as the film rendition of the characters goes the backstory not only isn't endless but it genuinely can't afford to be because people who've never read a single comic need to be able to watch and understand it; which they obviously do. I'm not sure where you're seeing a massive proliferation of prequels as only the X-Men franchise has gone in for that at all to my mind. And worrying about cameos is a nonsense argument because they literally are only cameos. You can happily watch any Marvel movie with no idea at all of who Stan Lee is and you lose nothing at all. Conversely it's a nice wee nod for the fans that gives them an extra smile; there's just no reasonable argument against it at all.

It's like you've decided what you want to think, then muddled up the comics and movies in your mind while throwing in some baseless stuff just to arrive at a justification.

I've never read the book and knew nothing about it going in and I fucking loved the film.

I really haven't. I don't have the time or the inclination to watch films I think are going to be rubbish just so I can tell myself I was right. Every time I have watched another of these charmless Marvel or DC shitfests it has been because I have believed what someone has said that it'll be entertaining and engaging but I've just been bored (Avengers Assemble was ok though). It's all just so fucking bland and humdrum and nothing that happens ever feels like it matters. The only thing that is any good in some of them is the CGI and effects work and the very occasional joke that raises a smile. And they do increasingly reference other films from their own universe as a way to lend gravitas to scenes or more depth to the characters and it just irritates me. Really good films manage to do all that stuff with completely new characters in under two hours. I just can't see them all as proper films in their own right.

It's all my own fault for continually watching them, though.

Fans of Drive might be interested to know that it's on TV on the 30th October, with an entirely new score.

Quote:
BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe is leading a project by the radio station to rescore the 2011 film Drive with tracks from artists such as CHVRCHES, SBTRKT and Eric Prydz. Lowe's ambitious project to curate an entirely new soundtrack for Nicolas Winding Refn's crime drama has received the backing from the director himself. The original score, which was revered for its pulsing retro-synth sounds and acute attention to tone and mood, featured tracks from Kavinsky, Chromatics and Desire.

I'm a big fan of Drive the film & the soundtrack.
I'm also a fan of Greek synth-pop band Marsheaux.

In my opinion, this would make a great substitute for "Real Hero".
Same mood, tone & atmosphere. Would fit on the soundtrack perfectly :

What's the point of giving a new score to a film that already has a great soundtrack. Why not do it to a film with a shitty score?

Potential boo to re-sound tracking drive, although that seems to risk snobbery. I agree with the above, their efforts would have been better spent elsewhere.

I watched a Million Ways to Die in the West.

Christ, it's just awful, isn't it? Isn't it? Brian from Family Guy may be a funny writer (well, actually, I'd disagree with myself right here but for the sake of this paragraph I'll assume he's written some funny lines) but he's just a terrible actor. There's something about him that's unlikeable; something about his face that's not right, and something about his overall screen presence that does not make him a star. At all. I've got a feeling that he's got a massive ego too which is why he was unable to give him his role to someone who might have done a much better job.

And, really, there's a shitting gag?

And a penis gag.

And a gag where a sheep does a wee on him.

I'm sure he thought this would be all very clever but it's awful. Man alive...

Oh man... We tried watching this on Sunday afternoon. I knew very little about it, other than Liam Neeson and Charlize Theron were in it and it was a comedy. It was horrendous, the worst movie I have ever attempted to sit through. It was in exactly the right humour for a 10-15 year old; the "jokes" were shockingly awful and I switched it off after the particularly laboured asshole "joke" near the beginning.

It's not in any way subtle or clever, all of the moments that you're apparently supposed to find funny can be seen from space. Perhaps it's my fault for watching it and expecting anything other than the shit Seth MacFarlane peddles as comedy. I thought Ted was bad but this... This is in a whole other league of cringe inducing awfulness.

I really cannot adequately describe how awful it was - there were a couple of physical comedy moments that raise a slight 'heh' and I found the horses name quite funny but unless you think Seth McFarlane is some kind of God, or you're 11: Avoid, avoid, avoid.

I agree about him being unlikeable, he looks a bit like a baby doll I think, which is fine because not everyone is movie-star handsome but he looks odd in a 'I can't quite put my finger on it' distracting way. And he's definitely a terrible actor.

The kids whinged when I turned it off, so I sent it to one of their xboxes so that could watch it upstairs. They thought it was hilarious. But they love Sacha Baron Cohen movies and Family Guy etc. so it was definitely their kind of level. We put Godzilla (2014) on. Which looked Oscar-worthy in comparison.

He looks like Joey Tribbiani's fat older brother.

Also, he does the same voice for everything and it winds me up.

Also, he dodged death on 9/11 and The Reaper from Final Destination is really slack.

You know he does the voice for Peter, Brian, Stewie, Quagmire and Tom Tucker in Family Guy and Stan and Roger in American Dad, right?

[edit] Added a few names. He does loads of different characters.
