Has anyone ever heard of American Psycho? Of course you have. It's an elegantly crafted movie that blurs the line between truth and insanity. Is he really a killer, or is he just a mental? Great stuff. Love it.

Did you know there was a sequel? Starring Mila Kunis? Of course there is! Look at this shit

Agreed. It was nice to have a big name superhero movie with a much smaller feel than we've had recently.

So glad I avoided the trailers though - having watched it now the first one gives away about 60% of the plot.

Second time I watched it, I noticed that during his "daydream" where

The Mummy did give us this amazing trailer that they released without doing the audio mix properly:

Looks almost as good as Donnie Darko 2.

Yes it got me in the gut a few times and I didn't expect it. It was also the kind of movie where I had no idea which way the end would go so..

In the diner when Jon Hamm is about to shoot Debora I was genuinely shitting that he would. The chemistry between Deborah and Baby sold me on that relationship instantly and I cared what happened to them.

Watch Jurassic World, a very silly film, but i enjoyed it.

I now have a huge crush on Bryce Dallas Howard.

I watched 'GASCOIGNE' on Netflix last night.

It needs to be stated upfront that this is not a 'warts and all' documentary, and some may find it incomplete and unsatisfying on this basis. (There is not a single mention of spousal abuse, and whilst alcohol is talked about his descent into alcoholism is not really discussed in any great detail, and the film ends at the point his football career ends).

The film is concerned primarily with his football career, and some early events in his life. Most of it is Gascoigne himself talking to the camera, with frequent cutaways to archive photos and videos, as well as talking head shots of Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney and José Mourinho.

I'm not really interested in football (I couldn't name anyone playing for top premiership clubs at the moment), but this is a compelling tale, well told. Gascoigne comes across as a sympathetic figure in many regards, although it is very hard to reconcile this with his violence towards his wife, racism, drink driving and so on, but it is clear he is a troubled man who is carrying pain and trauma that he has never managed to successfully deal with.

It's an affecting film, and I would recommend it.

820/1000.

So I watched "The Definant Ones" about Dr Dre and Jimmy Iovine which is billed a 4 part "motion picture" but it's a stylish TV documentary.

I say documentary but it's really a promotional tool for them/Interscope/Apple. It's overly stylised, overproduced and while it's not exactly boring it feels like a 4 hour Apple-esq advert.

There's very little in here that any fans of NWA/Ruthless/Deathrow/Aftermath won't already know. There's a couple of early videos of Eazy & the gang rapping in the booth which were good but they amount to mere seconds in an hour. There's more interesting stories to the Ruthless/Deathrow history than were told and Dre, actually, told us nothing new or even interesting about his story. You're better off watching DJ Vlad interviews on YouTube for the full story (in fact, I'd got a bit obsessed with some of these videos which are far more interesting. Check out BG Knocc Out recounting stories of when Eazy pulled out a hammer or when BG Knocc Out and Dresta fought Snoop and The Dogg Pound on the golf course for Montell Jordan's something for the honeys video).

And while you get a bit of Dre feeling sorry for punching the shit out of poor old Dee Barnes - which quickly excused as being due to alcohol - you don't get anything of Dre punching his girlfriend of several years Michel'le. A woman who had no less than 5 black eyes at the hands of Dre.

Die hard fans of the 80/90's West Coast won't get much out of this but you may find some mild interest in Jimmy Iovine's story but otherwise this is just a slick promotional video. Approach with caution.

Casino Royale was on TV t'other day. I like that film, it's good, but you know which bit I really like? The stylish opening credits with the silhouette men fighting and the playing card motifs.

Watched Baby Driver at the cinema last night.

Afterwards, Mrs Fop and I were picking up a sandwich from 24-hour tesco. I was parked out front in the taxi zone, engine running, music* blasting.

She opens the door, jumps in and hands me my sandwich and says "Let's go, baby."

I flip on the lights and peel away. And for a moment, through a mouthful of sausage and chicken sandwich, I AM Baby Driver.

*Erm, it was Erasure.

Yeah, not my kind of film normally, but the reviews seem extremely positive, and I'm sure it will be a proper spectacle.

I think IMAX for Valerian too, though I am less optimistic about how good the film will actually be.

We saw DESPICABLE ME 3 in the picture house called 'VUE' in Bury yesterday, it's at the end of The Rock.

It was the 1:55pm showing so there were about 10 people in, of which 3 were us, and we'd paid extra cash monies for VIP seats which are a bit posher and in the middle and tower imposingly over the paupers.

I thought the film was alright, made me laugh a few times. Main thing is Jnr loved it and found the whole thing very exciting.

I was hoping to watch Baby Driver or It Comes At Night but there are no afternoon showings for those.

It cost £4.98 for two bottles of water and the tickets were £10.79 each. (Non-VIP would have been £8.79 each.)

The volume levels were pretty extreme. I mean, I like loud things but this was arguably a bit too loud, but the sound system itself was awesome. There was some swooshy stuff at the start in amongst all the trailers that was a sort of YOU ARE LISTENING IN DOLBY advertisement and I really liked that.

I give the film CHILD-FRIENDLY/1000 and I give the picture house 810/1000.

I give the UK 520/1000 it is too big and noisy and overbearing I will be glad to be back on the IOM, but at least we have been able to have Burger King and beer is really cheap in Wetherspoons.

I give Northern people 925/1000 they are dead nice and friendly and there are lots of pretty young ladies pushing prams around who I think would appreciate a ride in an Audi S4.

I've been to the (rather poxy) cinema on the IOM a few times over the last 20 years, but I can't remember the last time I went to a 'proper' cinema in the UK. I think I saw War Of The Worlds with Tom Cruise in it when I was down Milton Keynes on a training course, so whenever that came out. Oh yes and I saw American Beauty when that came out, that was in the UK too.

This was way louder and more dramatic than anything I've heard in the cinema before though. I think it must be more modern technology than I have witnessed before. It's certainly a massive step up from what we have on the IOM, I would go to the cinema a lot more if the VUE experience was available on the IOM.

This was just one of the normal screens too, they had a VUE-EXTREME screen as well so fuck knows what that's like.

I watched THE NEON DEMON on Netflix last night, I see from earlier in this thread that opinion was mixed. It's handy the film has its own thread, like all films do here, so that when someone watches a film ages after everyone else, such as when it appears on a streaming service, there's a coherence and continuity to the conversation.

Anyway, I thought it was very 'Refn', although certainly not as good as Drive or Only God Forgives, or Bronson. It's been criticised as being style over substance but my take on it is that's sort of the point.

It also provided my weekly quota of lesbian corpse-fucking in one convenient package.

I'm refreshing my memory as to how utterly terrible A Million Ways to Die in the West is. It's absolutely horrendeous and without merit. Each individual scene is completely devoid of humour - just take each scene in isolation and they're terrible. It serves as nothing more than a vehicle for Seth MacFarlane's godawful weird forehead. He's the Ant without the Dec.

EDIT: and the "edgy" racist jokes? "If I was a black guy I'd like that fat ass. They love a fat ass." For fucks sake...

Go fuck yourself out of 10.

Neon Demon was the first Refn movie where I thought all the criticisms of his previous movie by people who didn't understand them were actually true about it.

Saw Despicable Me 3 at the weekend.

It was a fine visual spectacle but the whole thing was like watching Gigglebiz on Cbeebies only with added 80's references as a hat tip to the parents, rather than gags that actually work on two levels.

It goes something like this; Fart Gag, Eighties Reference, Fart Gag, Eighties Reference and it's all stitched together in a really disjointed manner so it doesn't feel like a film, more a series of unconnected sketches.

Not something I will be watching again when it's out on home formats.

You certainly get the feeling they could easily have not bothered with 3, but 1 and 2 made so much money that it was pretty much inevitable. The minions were almost like a separate presentation spliced into the film in two minute chunks at random intervals.

It's not a long film but it really sagged in the mid-section.

Not much in there for adults unlike 1 and to a lesser extent 2. Jnr loved it though.

Same as the Minions. That very much felt like a minion sketch show stitched together in the loosest possible way.

I think we might have dodged the bullet on D3s M3, as mini fops interest in the little yellow bollocks appears to have waned. She's all about Sing, which I've managed to avoid myself.

Watched 'To kill a mockingbird' last night. Must admit, I'd never read the book or seen the film before then. Certainly a very good film, but does seem to go on for an age. After, I did my usual nose through the IMDB trivia on it and saw this -

Quote:
With the death of Rosemary Murphy (Maudie Atkinson) on Saturday, July 5th, 2014, Robert Duvall (Boo Radley) is (or was) the film's last surviving adult cast member.

which then led me to double-check he was still alive.

Sing is inoffensive but really, really predictable.

Also most of the most interesting characters don't make it through the auditions.

Saw Despicable Me 3 at the weekend.

It was a fine visual spectacle but the whole thing was like watching Gigglebiz on Cbeebies only with added 80's references as a hat tip to the parents, rather than gags that actually work on too levels.

It goes something like this; Fart Gag, Eighties Reference, Fart Gag, Eighties Reference and it's all stitched together in a really disjointed manner so it doesn't feel like a film, more a series of unconnected sketches.

Not something I will be watching again when it's out on home formats.

Same as the Minions. That very much felt like a minion sketch show stitched together in the loosest possible way.

I think we might have dodged the bullet on D3s M3, as mini fops interest in the little yellow bollocks appears to have waned. She's all about Sing, which I've managed to avoid myself.

Sing is inoffensive but really, really predictable.

Also most of the most interesting characters don't make it through the auditions.

ZOMG SPOILZ.

On subject of kids films, at what age did you whip star wars out for them? I tried mini fop with A New Hope when she was four and she was scared by Vader and bored by the hours spent on Luke's dust farm. So we stopped after 30 mins.

Same goes for indy. Keen to watch but not sure if she's too young.

When the Grimlet was young, he too was bored with A New Hope. He liked Phantom Menace though, what with it being more child-friendly.

I think it was 4 for mine. She really liked them and was all excited to go see 7 in the cinemas.

We decided not to tell her about Rogue One, and will continue to hide that for some time. Weirdly, she has been fine with all the deaths, yet went absolutely ballistic and was in tears at a death in another recent space franchise.

I believe so. He said it in the behind the scenes documentary. If memory serves, that's the point where the camera zooms into the concerned faces of his coworkers.

My kids (4 and 6) were interested in Episode 4, but I think we started it too late in the day, so they haven't finished it yet.

They like the Lego Star Wars series though.
