Been listening to the Ready Player One audiobook recently (really well narrated by Wil Wheaton) and I just kept thinking that it would make an amazing film if it was done right. Just googled and and it turns out Spielberg is already on the case.

I think he was attached really soon after the book came out. Has there actually been any progress?

Cars 3 - far far far better than Cars 2.

Goodness me though, don't the Pixar films touch on some sad stuff for the grownups... this one was all about Lightning getting older :'(

The short at the beginning ('Lou') was really nice too.

There's really only a couple of scenes I disliked which could have been edited tighter to improve the film overall:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
One done from an alien POV with some shit music over the top could easily have been cut. The other was the Japanese blokes death which annoyed me mainly because the film started out as hard sci-if but they're all bouncing around when this massive vacuum is sucking them out into space it got a bit daft. And for some reason they try and pull the Japanese guy back when he's fucked and gets even more fucked when he got a mothership sized alien on him. They could have cut most of that and it would still have the same impact and probably been a better film for it.

Nitpicks aside it's a really good film. I think most people will see the ending coming off a mile off but I still thought it was a bloody great end.

Get away from her, you bitch out of 10.

I watched this last night and thought it was good but not great, partly for the reasons you've highlighted there.

Also, it did rely on supposedly very intelligent scientists doing curiously stupid things to move it along.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I mean, the whole thing could have been nipped in the bud if Deadpool hadn't made the appallingly bad decision to go into the lab when the alien had already made its astonishingly violent and hostile nature clear. A decision which, it turns out, will end all life on earth.

When it was tense and thrilling it was really tense and thrilling though.

As for the ending:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I didn't see it coming until the last moment, and when I realised that the film had done that clever little switcheroo I was like, 'Ooohhh that's a fucking dark ending, I like that'.

Definitely worth the investment of time to watch it.

JOHN WICK 2 THIS TIME IT'S WICKIER.

I enjoyed this. Goes on a bit too long and a few too many identikit fight scenes, plus there's a certain lack of tension as Wick himself is borderline unstoppable so it's not like you're thinking, 'Ooohhhh I wonder if he'll get away from all these entirely average goons in one piece'.

In many regards the original film was a bit of a one-trick pony, it just happened to be a very good trick, to use the same trick for the sequel is wearing it a bit thin.

That said it's very well assembled and always entertaining, although crosses over a line into 'gun porn' territory, one could argue.

Sets up the third film in the trilogy very nicely, and that'll certainly be worth watching.

Just watched 'Misconduct' on Netflix. Despite having Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino in it, it's pretty ropey stuff. I did like one of the bits of trivia about it on IMDB though -

Quote:
Made just £97 (about $125) in its UK opening weekend, with an average of 4 viewers per screen.

Googling around, it seems to be true, although it was only shown in five cinemas.

Trainspotting 2 is superb. A bit self indulgent at times, but has the wit, charm and cast to pull it off. Miller steals the show as a very angry Sick Boy.

Trainspotting 2 is very good indeed. Weirdly, despite not being about the lives of a load of hopeless junkies this time around, I found it a bit bleaker than the first film. It has it's moments of humour for sure but they're like concentrated pockets whereas the first film has a sort of lightness all the way through.

Talking of which, the trailer for Colossal, the current Anne Hathaway film, also makes it look fucking terrible but it reviewed pretty well so I gave it a shot. At first the film falls in line with the terrible romcom that the trailer tries to sell you, but about half way through it becomes clear that it couldn't give a fuck for your stupid concept of 'genres' and blithely mixes romcom with sci-fi with thriller. It doesn't stick the landing entirely but the heel turn of one of the characters that underpins the last section is properly chilling, and makes it even more amusing that Legion's Dan Stevens didn't seem to get the memo about what type of film he was actually acting in. It's not hurt by the fact that the two leads turn in very good performances throughout, especially Hathaway who juggles the demands of the different genres incredibly well.

:this:

No additional commentary from me. Watch Colossal. It's good.

I'd go the other way around. It can be a genre, but mostly it isn't. Most sci-fi films can be characterised as drama in space/future, horror in space/future, war in space/future etc, police buddy movie in space/future etc.

I'd say that it's a genre just because it tells you a bit about what to expect. e.g. nearly all scifi films have to spend a bit of time setting the scene, explaining the world. And you can expect that there's probably going to be quite a lot of special effects sequences. Some people love all that sort of thing and others hate it.

Does it even matter any more anyway? It's not like you're trying to find something in a video shop in 1995. Thanks to the modern miracle of computer databases where films usually sit in multiple genres you can search for a comedy and find comedies that are set in space as well.

I went to see the "Into The Unknown" sci-fi exhibition at the Barbican last week. That didn't clarify the question either. In other news, it was OK if a little scattergun in it's approach. But then it wasn't very large, so couldn't fail to be a missed opportunity.

The latter stages of the exhibition are seriously worth skipping, one being a 30min short film, the other being an installation. Neither of which would look out of place at an A' level end of year show in a provincial school.

I watched this last night and agree with the above, and felt that the film worked incredibly well as a result, in that it wasn't just trying to do a re-tread of the original, despite all the nods, winks, and indeed shot-for-shot recreations in many cases - this is a very different film although it is made of the same DNA.

It's got the lot really, everything you'd expect from a Trainspotting sequel but absolutely stands on its own merits. Funny, moving, profane, powerful, beautifully shot and masterfully directed with excellent use of music, and top-notch performances from the entire cast.

There are a couple of really tender scenes in there too, and a melancholy sense of lives wasted and gone wrong runs all the way through it, to great dramatic effect.

I very much enjoyed this and would say don't be put off by the somewhat mixed reviews, this is a splendid film.

We watched ARQ last night because it's by the guy that has written some Orphan Black and it sounded intriguing.

It does OK with a small budget but if you've seen Edge of Tomorrow then that's a much better movie covering the same kind of theme.

It suffers from that thing a fair few films do where they hold back significant elements of the plot for suspense reasons and then rush most of it out at the end while there's shouting going on and gunfire and I fucking hate that because I am old and can't make out half of what's going on and my attention is focused on the action more than the exposition dump. Tits.

I pretty much agree with everything you've said apart from the bold text.

I loved T2.

I really, really enjoyed it.

Yet I couldn't help shaking this feeling that it's not actually a good film in its own right, because it simply cannot exist without the first film.

Of course, by their very nature, sequels need the first film in order to exist. But T2 relies much more heavily on the first for everything. It's allowed to not really tell much of a story or do much with the characters, because it's still ploughing the rich emotional furrows of the first film.

Don't get me wrong, I loved it. But it felt like an amazing piece of DLC rather than a sequel in its own right.
