It's okay, Hollywood says we can like him again now.

After the ridiculously long blood and torture porn of his Christ movie, I don't think there's any chance of that.
Or me quite forgiving the person who dragged me to the cinema to watch it.

Still probably better than The Holiday.

Haven't seen it, but it was broadly as enjoyable as Bridget Jones Diary.

At a compact 80 minutes or so (when the credits are discounted) I felt it was paced about right, when you bring it down to brass tacks the story is very simple and not a huge amount of 'stuff' actually happens - so the running time seemed fine to me.

I also felt the story arc was spot on and it ended as it needed to. Although once again the weak link of Gibson's daughter really didn't help on that count.

Just to bring some sanity back: I watched Blood Father and it was dogshit. Narrative, cinematography, editing, characters, portrayal and dialogue: dogshit. It's 80 minutes long and still took me 3 sittings to watch it in its entirety. Dog. Shit. 1 steaming dogturd out of ten.

It had about 20 minutes left and I was bored.

Anyway, if you like daft horror films you could do worse than "Don't Breathe." It has the dubious honer of being the only film I know where there's a sexual assault by turkey baster.

EDIT: And a killer dog who is clearly just enjoying being in a movie. Bless 'im.

Sounds to me like Ian should cheer himself up with a further viewing of Discopathe.

Welcome back as well old chap :)

As for Blood Father, it's a comfortably above average film, mostly thanks to crazy old Mel but also a good percentage of the cast, and I think it'd be hard to argue that it isn't very well shot and generally well written/directed/etc.

The general critical consensus out there is about the same, so I'd suggest folks give it a watch and make up their own minds. At 80 minutes minus credits it's not like a 'The Dark Knight' exercise in dreary tedium that never delivers a payoff of any note whatsoever, which you only get to realise after two and a half hours that feels like a million years.

Had a rare night out with my wife Friday and went to see The Girl on the Train at the cinema.

It was a compromise for me as my wife didn't like any of the other options.

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would, good film and a pleasant change from what I normally watch.

Watched Cell last night. Samuel L Jackson and John Cusack. In probably the worst and worst made film I've ever seen. There's an early scene in a tunnel where they've kept the echoing around the dialogue, and you can barely hear them. I charitably thought they were going for 'edgy', and 'pah, words? All about the suspense'. But actually, just lazy incompetence.

Watched the hunger games 'trilogy' over the weekend.

I think catching fire was the best one.

Mockingjay was too slow paced.

Tuesday night we watched Ghostbusters (the new one). It was OK, could have done with a tighter cut in places. The blonde one was annoying. I think my favourite bit was

Last night I chose the film, so we watched The Lobster -
'In a near-future world, single people are hunted and forced to find mates within 45 days, or be turned into animals and banished to the wilderness.'

It was, of course, brilliant. You should all watch it.

For me it was that there was a whole scene where she just danced for no reason that could have been cut, the jargon was overdone, and she licked a gun weirdly.

I found it very funny overall though.

I just thought she was boring. To be honest, none of the four leads had the best lines or moments, that was new Janine (can't remember his name... Keith/Kevin).

Did you watch the extended edition or the theatrical cut? They changed loads of stuff in the extended one, added some new stuff but crucially removed some lines that I thought were great.

Also, re. your spoiler:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The best part about that joke for me, hands down, is that at the end of the film during the credits, there's a bit where loads of those photos of him come fluttering across the screen, and one of them is him with a stethoscope on. Like, that one didn't even occur to him when he was picking his favourites ;)

We watched the new Ghostbusters over the weekend in two parts as we thought it was a bit pap towards the middle. Our kids (who had seen it with their Grandma at the cinema) told us to watch the end as it was really good, and to be fair it did improve a lot.

Bit miffed by the unnecessary 'F-bomb' when they're told how much the old fire house rent was.

UPDATE: Just IMDB'd the swears and the F-Bomb scene is only on the extended version. So dirty torrenters beware if you get it for your kids.

Also watched Suicide Squad. Enjoyed this more than I thought I would as lots of folk at work had slated it.

Both had been unnecessarily slated.

I like SS, but it is not Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel seem to be on point for the their films, DC not so much.

I will be watching the new GB tonight. I can't remember the sware word.

Bit miffed by the unnecessary 'F-bomb' when they're told how much the old fire house rent was.

Are you 12?

12 year olds love swearing. Z's post reads more like an elderly Telegraph reader's.

No, but my kids are only 8 and 5 for fucks sake so I was pissed off at the fact they might have been taken to a film that had a foul mouthed cunt as a lead character.

My mother protected me from swear words when I was a kid and I still grew up to be a foul mouthed cunt.

Her mother protected her from swear words when she was a kid and she still grew up to be a foul mouthed cunt.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that her mother almost certainly protected her from swear words as a kid and I bet she still grew up to be a foul mouthed cunt.

My kids are 7 and 4 and probably definitely know all the words you just used in your post.

But they don't use them, because they understand the importance of context. Because I taught them the importance of context.

And if they're going to grow up and turn into foul mouthed cunts anyway, what's the point in worrying?

I know they know swear words.

But at their age I don't knowingly expose them to any bad language if I can help it.
