Ah, I thought it was my lumbering graphics card leading to the slowdown for me. Only had time for one go last night and got about 150k (took a screenshot but forgot to upload the damn thing) but I should be able to improve on that.

ok then, probably some emulation problems. Nothing wrong with my computer.

This game has some differences compared to the amiga. It's much harder to gain extra lives (there's less time to do so) and the crocodiles come after level 3 (i think it was level 10 on the amiga). The graphics and sound in the arcade are slightly inferior imo.

It's almost excellent this game. I much prefer Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands personally.

As for this week :

http://s11.zetaboards.com/RetroLeague/topic/474381/1/

I know the game inside out and can help anyone who gets stuck , i expect to finish it with a score of over 2 million , it should take you about 45 minutes from start to finish.

The best way to make 10p last that long in our local arcade.

Oh and keep your eyes open for the wonderful engrish.

He he, I'll let you have that, well played.

You'll be biting the pillow next week Grim...

Also: Did anyone try whoring the crocodile 1st boss bit? If you leave it too long they all come back and the little critters coming out of their mouths all bounce and come out at twice the speed!

Ooh, I didn't know about that. I also didn't realise that the devil guy that killed me was the last boss in the game. I had three lives when I got to him, too.

You don't think I'd have said I'd got 312701?

Plus, with my 1337 photoshopskilz it's just as easily to make pixel perfect lies with a screenzor.

I don't mind using the Japanese version, as long as it's the same game as the English one (with only the text different, natch).

Ok. i'll attach it later.

You should use the english as there is some text in the game. Even so, the broken english is absolutely adorable. There's two different versions and both have different translations. I really can't choose between them, they're both great.

I can post links when i'm home tonight - the last time we played it you needed both the parent and the english rom

"Zaphod79 brings us Sega's Wonder Boy in Monsterland from 1987. We're playing the bootleg rom 'wbmlb' as its in English. This game also requires the Japanese rom 'wbml' to be present, so you'll need to have both of those installed to play."

I've played 2 uk versions with differnet 'engrish' in the arcades , and have also played a japanese one with the language as japanese (but could still finish it :-)

I can hardly remember this games mechanics, I do remember thoroughly loving it on the Master System though.

Jinkies, that was many moons ago now...

Okay the two roms you should need :

wbml : http://www.retroleague.myzen.co.uk/wbml.zip
wbmlb : http://www.retroleague.myzen.co.uk/wbmlb.zip

Drop both into your MAME roms folder , and you want to play wbmlb which is marked in MAME as "Wonder boy in monster land" and mentions 'bootleg' on the game description screen.

All sorted, screenshotable too guys x

Forgot to mention, I cured it by downloading the roms from elsewhere rather than the links Zaphod supplied, still not sure if it was the way Safari was trying to unzip the files on the fly that borked them or not.

Keep getting scuppered by the Knight in the Castle...

I'll wait until weekend until posting a score as I'm pretty sure I can improve on what I've got so far.

Which one ?

The Red knight should be easy enough if your wearing armour , have a sheild or even have picked up some weapons (down to fire them).

Normally get there with some magic, shoes and the broadsword.

I kinda know where I'm going wrong for next time though.

Okay - you should also have either picked up some weapons (thunder / fireballs / whirlwinds) or saved enough cash to buy your first set of knight armour (just before the conveyer belt before you go into the knight - you pass a point and the message "ha!" pops up - push up to enter the shop)

Other obvious thing to point out it to make sure you shake the joystick left and right when your jumping to trigger the hidden coins - without it you'll get between 1 and 6 coins , with shaking some of them will be 60+

For the knights there are a few ways to do them - the best is to hit them as they start and push them into the corner and keep hitting them so they stay there , or hit them then back off , wait for them to jump and hit them as they land (or run under / turn and hit them)

Yeah, this is what I need to do.

The money plays an important part in the whole game , you pick up Swords for killing the special enemies but you will very rarely get armour / boots / shields , you also need to ballance those because too heavy armour without boots and you'll be too slow to make jumps , too good boots without the armour to weigh you down and you'll never be able to stop on the platforms you need - you will just skid off.

BTW on score when you finish the game you will have between 350,000 - 600,000 points , however you then get a bonus for all your gold , with 100 gold = 100,000 points so for my 1.2 million score above i finished with around 400,000 points but then had around 700 gold left to give me that total , it then becomes harder as you scrimp and save to not spend money but hang onto it so you can get more points at the end of the game - i have finished things without legend armour or shield but the whole game becomes much harder to do because any hit from the enemies takes much more health off you.

Also if you dont have a decent shield at the end (the dragon) his flames will take energy off you each time he jumps at you - if you have the sheild it just pushes you further back along the screen

Okay lets try this

Download this file here :

http://www.retroleague.myzen.co.uk/wbmlb2.zip

92k

Unzip it into your mame\inp folder (it expands out to about 14 meg)

For windows mame users - start up mame , go to file , playback input and select the inp file

If your using the command line it will be :

mame wbmlb -playback wbmlb

No idea for mac but i assume macmame has a playback feature

Its a 'recording' of me finishing the game , you can see where things are and how to pick up the various items
You can use F10 to increase the speed

- this isnt from 'now' but when i last played it in the retroleague (so i'm not counting the score of 1.4 million for my go this week)

It may help some of you who are stuck at certain points, once you understand the pattern for Kraken its easy enough , the next one is the first real problem (kong)
