Feb 2016 update

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

Blue line is daily count (of total posts/day or unique posters/day, depending which chart you are looking at.) Red line is a 180 day moving average.

Hi! I still like graphs so I made some more. Daily counts of active posters and total number of posts on Beex, from April 2008 to yesterday. Blue lines are data, red lines are a 14-day moving average.

Analysis:
  • The high points on the daily post counts (unsurprising) correspond to forum drama.
  • Jan 9th was bonkers busy.
  • Both post count and poster decline throughout Jan-Feb '09. Post count has stabilised to mid-2008 levels after some brief periods of greater volume. Poster count has fallen more, although I don't think to any sort of the-sky-is-falling degree. In practical terms we have around 10-12 fewer active posters since the end of '08.

Grim... and I have streamlined this process, so I will keep updating these every so often if people are interested.

Hmmm. Coincidentally, do we know how many more posters [another forum - Ed] has in the same time period?

Also - GAH. Chinny is technically correct.

Sorry 'bout that. I posted this in the old "Top 20 posters" thread and tried to change the title, but because the first post in the thread was owned by 'RemovedByRequest' phpbb spat its dummy out. So now you have a new thread instead, kk?

So about the same 'decline' that was seen in late summer '08 then?

Dunno. I became an active poster after that. Yep, I have only been around about 5 months.

Yes. I don't think it's a very big thing.

Mr Chris is also correct that this corresponds not only to when STAG opened but also to the number of Beex accounts that became very lightly used or entirely disused after that (yourself, Shin, Dudley, AAB, Sheepeh off the top of my head, probably a couple more I'm forgetting). Remember that these stats track the number of unique accounts that posted each day.

There weren't many games out and people went on holiday, I would guess.

Actually, scratch that, I started posting in July. It must've been me that started the decline

It has been quiet, but just in the last week we've had several people "come back" and two new joinees. So it's not all bad :D

Plus I think there's a few people who are temporarily quiet due to work/life stuff rather than having permanently taken their toys somewhere else. Or whatever.

edit - Also: quality not quantity :attitude: :smug:

All of these points are true. There also hasn't any major news events or major games released for two months now, both of which stir up postcount.

Am I? Crivens, break out the tinned Japanese Champagne substitute!

More to the point do we have stats for the main site? And what can we do to help it get more visits?

Could we perhaps do some link swaps? I have a thing on my own website where there are tiny 1 pixel blank images at the bottom of the page which have hyperlinks to other sites. I'd be happy to donate one of those to the main site (and of course, it works all the better if the receiving site reciprocates).

We need to get more streamlined at flowing stuff from contributers, through reviewers, into production, too. I don't think we're technically live yet, are we?

See the comment in the admin thread about having a Site Admin, who's responsibility is primarily keeping the site going - I think it's needed.

Grim... does, I don't have access just now. Low I expect right now. I want to rejig the site navigation, hopefully early next week, then I think it's ready for public consumption.

Write good content (done) then pimp the content (pending).

Probably, but it's mainly only internal links within the site. It's not a huge list of irrelevant sites. I do need to rejig it though.

New and updated graphs!

Hosted in this Google spreadsheet because it does this funky interactive Flash timeline plot stuff I cannot embed here.

Two plots in that spreadsheet; one of number of posts per day ("how much conversation do we have?") and one of the number of unique posters each day ("how many voices are in the conversation?"). Each has a 28-day moving average plotted in red and raw data plotted in blue.

Thanks to Grim... for generating and passing me the data.

Interesting stuff. The average number of posts has dropped significantly, whilst the number of posters has dropped only slightly. So basically people are posting less.

But not since late 2009 / early 2010, where things have been pretty stable. One Hell of a summer slump in 2010, though. I suspect we'll see the same thing again.

I think people seem to be putting more of an effort in the last few days, which is nice, because you can get that real conversation going.

Obviously the bank holiday has knackered things somewhat.

And the slump this year seems to coincide with Mr Chris getting a new job where he can't post all day.

+ we lost Dimrill.

an observation - the slight peak at the start of march in '10 compared to the dip this year is probably down to the fact that we had really shitty snow in '10 and sunshine in '11

Updated stats!

A reminder: the graphs below are year-on-year plots of a 28-day moving average of the number of unique user accounts who post on Beex on each day, and the number of posts made on Beex each day. There's raw data and other graphs here, including those cool zoomable timeline graphs Google use for the Finance site.

The two graphs below suggest that posters/day fell a little in the first few months of 2009 from the peaks of 2008, and has been largely static ever since; notably, May-Jul 2011 is a little up compared to 2010. However, posts/day dropped throughout 2009-early 2010 and is now about 65% of volume compared to the forum's launch. So, taking that together, it would suggest that as we've lost high-post-count users over the years, we've mostly recruited users with lower post counts (but who don't visit the forum any less) to replace them. I think that's a comfortable place to be in, personally.
