I need to buy a new set of in-ear headphones for use with my iPod Touch. I am prepared to spend up to about £35. My last lot were some Sennheiser jobbies and were pretty good.

Do any of you pretty cats have any strong recommendations?

Yup I can recommend these too. Also the different sized rubbery bits are really handy.

I used to say "in-ear headphones" until someone pointed out I was a twerp and should just call them "earphones".

I share that story for the public good.

earphones can also be the design which doesn't actually go inside your ear properly, so in-ear still counts.

Don't deny that I was still a twerp though.

Speaking of new earphones, has anybody found a decent iPhone pair yet?

I found a pair in HMV about a year ago, but while the sound quality is okay (nothing spectacular), the build quality is quite rubbish, the fit isn't particularly good, and the little inline remote/mic is absolute shite.

I noticed a fair few pairs in the Apple store when I visited last, but I didn't bother jotting down names to look for reviews.

I just got a set of Skullcandy FMJs - can't remember the model number but there's a newer version of them out so I got these for £38 instead of £60. They're OK, but I think I would have been disappointed if I'd spent £60 on them as there's no volume control on the mic, which isn't that big a deal, but still. Not sure about the newer versions though...

Sound quality is OK if a little bass heavy like all inner ear phones.

Sennheiser make some with the mic built in as well. Generally, the Skullcandy get better reviews for build quality and the Sennheiser for sound.

Try Amazon to start with.

I've gone with the CX300 II in-ear headphones.

I think they are the same as my old set.

Thanky.

In-line microphone with built-in play-pause/skip button. I use it enough to miss it if I switch to normal earphones.

Oh right. I bullied Mrs Grim... into getting this (although not from that shop) and a pair of my Sony earphones.

Probably of limited use, but I found the microphone from the N95 hands-free thing works on the iPhone, but the buttons don't. This means you can use normal headphones and have hands-free calls. I've used this (along with having a spare N95 thingy) to convince my wife to get some CX-300 IIs, which are indeed very nice.

Just thought though, she'll still have to press something on the actual phone to answer calls... hmm...

I think I'll have a look in the Apple store next time I go, then look up some reviews. I need the buttons (play, pause, skip, answer/hang up calls all on one button) and the mic for it to be useful; not having to take your phone out of your pocket is lovely, even with the limited function of the inline controller itself.

Yes, I can see it would quickly get annoying to lose that. Please do let us know your eventual conclusion/purchase.

Malabar>. If you find a pair that does that, and comes with a display screen that also shows what is playing, that I could send texts from and browse the internets, I'd well be in the Market for that functionality.

I found the iPhone earbuds kind of work with my HTC Hero: the centre button works ok for pausing music and answering calls, but the up/down buttons don't work, and neither does the mic. Which was baffling for a while, because I could answer calls by pressing the button, but they couldn't hear me unless I then unplugged the earbuds and used the phone normally.

With that though, you're spending £30 of the £35 budget on just the adapter.

Indeed. The advantage of having an adaptor that will let you use any headphones and retain handsfree/button functions is obvious. But not at thirty bloody quid!

As an aside, do Apple have a patent on making the whole inline mic unit a button or something?

Sorry, Grim.... I did see your suggestion but completely forgot to comment. I can't justify that much on just an adapter, and it looks awkward. Cheers, though.

It might be perfect for me, though, as I have expensive Shure headphones that bug me by having to be removed when anyone calls!

I love my headphones, and wouldn't swap them for less awesome ones that work with the phone, so I may well get this.

Cheers, Grim...

They look to be plagued with quality issues, from the many reviews on Amazon. I'll keep looking.

Why you just look at the apple website - they sell loads of iPhone ready earphones and there are handy customer reviews. You can then search for the best place to buy them (I'd be surprised if it's the apple site, tbh)

I have to say MF, you're being spectacularly fucking lazy not looking this shit up yourself :p

Cock off :)

I always intended to properly look for myself, just I was asking if anybody had any particular ones they were happy with. I didn't realise the Apple store had customer reviews, though. I don't remember seeing them in the past. Cheers, chap.

Ah, that's a shame. I hoped they might be basically CX-300s with a built-in hands-free doo-dah ( :hat: ).
