So no one finishes games anymore. That's the proposed truism of this inane pastime. So much so that if someone finishes a game then thats a pretty good sign that a game was half decent.

Do you actually finish games anymore? Or more importantly how many do you finish compared to how many you buy? Why not try posting here whenever you complete a game? With a little review even. And the BeeX rank (S,A,B,C... etc. With S reserved for super special perfect 10s) Then at the end of the year we can see who 'did best,' most completed game and so on.

RULES: Completed is defined as completing the bare bones of the game. Collectables, unlockables, Newgame+ and so on don't count. If the credits roll then you've finished.*

* No, games which have the credits as an option in the menu don't count. Obviously.

January
  • Mirror's Edge - Though no where near done with it. Love it hard. Getting the DLC for sure. S rank
  • Boom Blox - Well as near as you can without caring about Gold that much. A rank
  • Psychonauts - came back to it to polish of Meat Circus. Wonderful game, though the year long gap spoiled the end somewhat.A rank

fallout 3 - although Ive still got many many hours to play with it - the main quest picks up speed towards the end and you just want to finish it rather then go around looking for more stuff - S rank

God yes. I picked up Fallout 3 for £25 and took a big chance on it. But it is superb. I've dumped 54 odd hours into it so far, and no where near finished. For once a game lived up to the hype.

I've completed seven of twenty of my 360 games. That is very good for my past record.

Post subject:  Re: No one finishes games anymore

I finished more games in 2008 than I have done in the rest of my life. Looking at my shelf:

  • Bully (100%)
  • GTA IV (story mode)
  • Call of Duty 4 (on Normal)
  • Gears of War (Hardcore & Insane)
  • Crackdown
  • EDF 2017 (Easy)
  • Frontlines: Fuel of War (Normal)
  • Halo 3 (Legendary)
  • Half-Life 2 (for the second time) & Episode One
  • Prey (Normal)
  • Top Spin 2 (100%)

I don't count the Guitar Hero games, as I haven't quite beaten them on Hard yet. I've already finished Fable II this year. Games I've finished pre-2008:

  • Max Payne
  • Max Payne 2
  • Fahrenheit
  • Doom 3
  • Half-Life (plus Opposing Force & Blue Shift)
  • Halo
  • Sam & Max Hit the Road
  • The four Monkey Island games (with walkthroughs for first two as very young)

I really can't think of anything else. I'm having a gaming renaissance.

14/20 here which is damn impressive. Dead Rising, Oblivion, Stuntman, Lego Star Wars II, Beautiful Katamari and Left4Dead (which doesn't count) and Fallout 3 uncompleted. And most will stay that way.

6/15 for me... not great, but its kinda hard to complete PES or Madden 09.
And about 3 of those games I traded in after playing them for about 5 mins (came with xbox jobby)
That and CoD4 and fallout 3 have raped my time significantly mainly the 8+ days spent playing cod online

I don't play much of the stuff listed here, but I do finish most of the games I'm into. I'm currently working on single-crediting R-Type II and Metal Black, and I'm slowly plugging away at God Hand on the side.

Edit: Oh, and I'm still playing Fallout 3, but in a really patchy fashion. I'm sure I'll get around to seeing everything eventually, but at the moment I'm concentrating on doing everything in the lousiest possible way with my 'evil' female character, and doing some of the quests/visiting some of the places I missed out on in my first play-through.

Great thread Lave. I disagree though!

I feel the same way about myp; I've completed more games on the 360 than I have on all previous systems in total I think. On the 360 alone I've reached the end of Gears 1, Half-Life 2, Bioshock, Fallout 3, CoD4, Crackdown, Oblivion, Dead Space. On top of that, in the last two years since getting into console gaming in a big way, I've completed RE4 (twice, on Gamecube and Wii), three Ace Attourney games, Zelda DS, Puzzle Quest, and (I'm sure) more DS games I'm forgetting.

The 360 in particular has (I believe) made it easier to reach the end of games, by redefining what the end of the game means. Multiple difficulty levels are now standard, and grinding for targets that would once have been part of the main game are now reserved for optional gamescore whoring. Overall, I feel it's a golden age for reaching the ends of games, and this is something I am happy about.

I agree with everything you say Doctor Glyndwr. I only phrased the thread that way because thats what I hear self described hardcore people bleating on about and likewise I seem to be completing games more than I used too.

Nevertheless I still think people completing games is still a significant sign that the game is worth considering.

But would you not say that that has diminished games somewhat though? Or is it a case that they have changed the target to meet demand as they know no one finishes games any more? Replayablity is a factor in defining a quality game, in fact, further to Lave's question: How many games after finishing have you gone back and played again? I would say that that is a bigger rating of a game, I very rarely go back and play a game on a higher difficulty, or to go through that door I couldn't go through before as I wasn't evil enough. Hell, even with RPGs I rarely bother to remake another character with a completely different skill set and replay the game.

I see where you're coming from, but you could just as well say that games makers now allow the player to define what "completed" means to them. You can buy Gears of War, complete it on Easy, see every cutscene and fight every type of enemy; you've had the maximum value from your investment, and the publisher has delivered maximum value to you. Another player will choose to complete the game on Insane for personal satisfaction. Someone else might not regard a game as completed until they have all 1000GP. All three players can walk away with a sense of completion, of closure, and all three have enjoyed all the content the game has to offer.

Post subject:  Re: No one finishes games anymore

yeah, okay in that sense I agree, but things like Fable, you couldn't enter certain areas of the game unless you were evil, but the storyline wasn't engaging enough to go back and play through the same things again just to get a look behind a door or two. I have no problem with this, I just wondered if people saw it as a market led change of design, or a lazy one.

I haven't even bought any games recently never mind finished any new ones!

I think the last few games I finished would be on the Wii: SMG, Mario Kart, Excite Truck and DS: Mario Kart, Super Mario.

I do like to finish games when I get them though.

Just this weekend I finished Ocarina of Time.

Before that, I recently purchased the Orange Box and finished Ep. 1 and 2, plus Portal.

I was well on the way to finish Burnout Paradise, when my Xbox 360 unexpectedly* died.

I always play my games through to the end, at least if they're story-based and not entirely shit. Although I also finished Fahrenheit not so long ago.

* I mean, weren't they supposed to have fixed this by now? It was only 10 months old, an Elite model, 175W. I mean, wasn't it supposed to have been dealt with by now? I mean, WTF?!?

Oh, and I also just finally managed to get the last S rating in Excite Truck. I had completed everything else more than a year ago, but that last gate challenge was a real bitch. I booted up the game the other day, and suddenly it was done. Yeah, look at all them stars!

And I almost finished Quake IV a couple of weeks ago, but I reached a bit that was so utterly shit I just could not go on.

Much later, near the end. Basically a lot of enemies that all must be shot a gazillion times to die that are running straight towards you in a very confined space. If you happen to be low on health or ammo, you have no chance of continuing.

January 2009

Gears of War 2 (360) - Scenery snagging is still a fucking pain in the arse and the weapons are too weedy but still very enjoyable. and pretty. A-
Resistance 2 (PS3) - Totally fucking stupid difficulty spikes and cheaty AI along with rubbish weaponry but decent enough variety to warrant finishing it. B-
Dead Space (360) - Slow motion dismemberment and cheap shocks NEVER got old. A

Games I intend to finish this month;

Ratchett & Clank - Tools of Destruction (PS3) - Picked it up for £10 in Currys the other day - so far so good.
Super Stardust HD (PS3) - Saw DBSnappa had inched past me the other day so I put that right but still need to get that last planet.
Devil May Cry 4 (360) - Must get back into it as I was enjoying it before something else came along.

FIFA 09
(Finished Be A Pro mode, won International Cup with England to become a National legend.)
I’ve spent the majority of my time with FIFA on the play-as-a-single-player Be A Pro mode, and the longer I’ve played it the more niggles and irritations have revealed themselves. Chief among them is a crippling bug that seems to make players disappear from your club side over the course of a season. This got so bad that at the end of my year in Milan I was playing two reserve strikers and seven defenders, because Kaka, Ronaldinho, Pirlo, Ambrosini, Emerson, Gatusso, and Antonini had all inexplicably gone walkabout. Despite promises, there’s no sign whatsoever of a patch to sort this out, which is hardly a surprise given that the Madden series had lingering issues that would last for 3-4 years at a time despite every forum dedicated to the game anywhere ever being chock-full of justifiably hacked-off gamers grumbling/screeching about it. Rank: B
