Yes, I accept you are correct, but I had to go check because I have no memory of this at all. Weird. LT readies knife, RT readies gun, A fires, B reloads (on the 'Cube pad). It's clearly been too long since I played with with a pad.

Y'know, maybe it's hours of Gears of War and CoD4 and whatnot, but that would feel utterly alien to me now. I think perhaps they've made the right choice in making shoot right trigger and aim left trigger. 'Course, they could always have put an option in the settings menu.

The new control scheme (trigger to actually fire) is honestly not the issue. It's the fact that the old scheme (button to fire) is in there specifically for those used to the GC and PS2 system, except incorrectly implemented.

Y'know, actually they have. The demo has the controls set to Type D. Type A actually says underneath that it's classic RE4 controls.

Ok, I've been playing the Gamecube REmake a lot this weekend, but I seem to have got stuck in the shotgun room.
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
When I go back into the room with the ceiling that lowers, the other door is locked and when I go back into the shotgun room again, I can't leave unless I put the shotgun back. Walkthroughs say that Barry should come to my rescue, but if I just leave it, then I die.

I think something's fucked up, because in each walkthrough I've looked at, it says something like this:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
CONNECTING CHAMBER
Aw crap! The ceiling is falling! Try both of the doors. Both of them are
locked! Stay calm though, because help's on the way. Barry will come and
shoot out the door lock. He'll open the door and drag you out just before
you get crushed.

***NOTE***
You HAVE to try to open both doors or Barry will not appear.
***NOTE***

The problem is that only the far door is locked when I try it. I can re-enter the shotgun room. Have I missed something out which is preventing Barry from coming to save me?

Having played the demo both alone and with DrG, it's once again a case of battling with the controls more than the zombies.

The inventory sharing thing is pretty clever, that you can run in to finish off a reeling zombie is cool, and that it seems to take place in Eye-Rak is interesting. Oh, and Mrs Metal walked past while I was playing, saw Sheva and declared it was yet another game starring her!

I think I'll wait on getting this - co-op shenanigans will likely end with someone saying 'I don't want to play this any fucking more, the controls are too shit'.

Not from me it won't, they don't bother me at all, and my 30+ hours on the Cube version of Resi 4 attest to this. I'll admit the aiming control takes a little getting used too -- something about the acceleration is slightly off -- but I'll take that over Gears of War's "what? you want to run away from RAAM? No, I think you want to go into cover with your back to him instead, surely?" roadie-run-and-cover-on-same-button mechanic any day.

And I'll take the easily learned habit of running from cover to cover over "what? You want to shoot at the man on your left? Wait there a sec, I'll see what I can do. Almost there... a few seconds longer.... there you go. Oh, what - he's eaten your face? Sorry about that."

I played this round a mate's last night and enjoyed it muchly (even though I had to play as the girl :( ), but the controls are well up the swanny. In particular, trying to run, move and move the camera at the same time had me performing some kind of joypad gymnastics - right thumb held down on A and right forefinger twisted over the top on the right analogue pad. I looked like my grandma playing games.

HMMMM. I downloaded the PS3 version last night and there's no discernible tearing and it looks as pretty as the 360 version at first glance with only some strange shimmering shadows spoiling matters.

Without the distraction of the tearing I managed to Benny Hill the chainsaw guy to death and for some reason explode more heads than on the 360. I'll give it another go tonight with a more critical eye (was late last night when I tried it out) but currently the PS3 version is looking the more likely version for me to pick up. How queer.

i completely agree with craster. That goes to all the games with checkpoints and no quicksaves. If people don't like quicksaves because it disrupts the action, then don't use it.

No, sorry, violently disagree. Save-anywhere would ruin Resident Evil, and the designers of Gears of War, Call of Duty, and Dead Space presumably agree with me.

RE4 allows you to use each save point as often as you like and you pass one every 10-15 minutes anyway. If you have to stop playing outside of thse schedule, running back to the last one usually only takes a minute or so.

Yep, quicksaving ruins a lot of games, in my opinion; there's no risk/reward. Oopsy, I've died. Good job I press F5 every 30 seconds...

In RE, it's worse; it's "ooh, now I know where those four guys will come in pairs, I know I can save six bullets if I take the second member of each pair out with the knife".

Ah, that I'd be fine with. It was more the limited number of available ribbons in the earlier games that I objected to. They physically prevented you from playing for a short period of time, because you knew you then wouldn't have enough ribbons to carry on.

that's like saying that no game has a reward because you can adjust the difficulty slider at any time.

One good example of the bad things of checkpoints is Gears of War. The game in normal difficulty is just too easy. At Hardcore, is just fine, but checkpoints are way to far apart, and dying halfway through or near the next checkpoint just made me forget it.

RE4 typewrites are close enough though. Even though sometimes i have 15 minutes to kill, and the lack of quicksaves just ruin it.

One good solution was to disable quicksave when there was enemies around.

That always annoyed me too as I was never quite sure how many ribbons I'd stumble across later in the game.

In some places of RE4 it seemed there were save points too close to each other.

Now that people her are mentioning tension, and that quicksaving ruins it. The most tense and scariest games ever had quicksaving: System Shock 2, Stalker, Thief series, Undying.

This whole limited ribbons thing can cause tension yes, but in the wrong way.
