I have to say that after having had Spotify premium for some months now I wouldn't be without it. After a while of keep on listening to the same old tunes or looking for new albums by people I already listened to I'm finding so much new music to listen to. A tenner a month for this and six quid for Netflix is nothing.

Fucking Spotify seem to have removed the Discover feature which was pretty much the best thing about it. After using it for so many years the recommendations had become really decent and I've found loads of new stuff to listen to through it. You can still get to it by entering spotify:app:discover into the search box but it's now infested with shit about what is "trending near you" and suggestions that I might enjoy listening to cocking Mumford and shitting Sons. Appalling wankers. If I cancel this what decent alternatives are there? Does anyone use the paid Google Play music?

I use Last.fm for recommendations. It needs to track what you've been listening to for a while though.

Spotify's a giant pain in the ass, on Android anyway. I rarely use it so it's not worth paying for but now and again I want to hear a particular album I don't have on my phone so fire Spotify up. As a free user I realise I'm hobbled by the 'shuffle play' feature but that way it's supposed to work is it plays the tracks of the selected album in a random order. What it actually fucking does is just start playing whatever the hell it wants, sometimes tracks from a completely random artist, all the while telling you that it's shuffle playing the selected album. It's the kind of obvious bug that should be so trivial to find I assumed it was me that was doing something wrong but I fiddled with it for ages and couldn't find any obvious idiocy on my part. It pretty much renders the software useless which has led to me uninstalling it.

I've never known that to happen. You're selecting the album and then hitting play "on" it, right, rather than going to the artist and scrolling to the album in their list of "everything" and choosing one of the songs?

I didn't get on with Spotify, I do use Google play though. Will see how it compares properly when I get my own car back.

I resubcribed for Premium on this the other day, according to my account history I last had Premium back in 2010.

Anyway, it works well enough through a web browser but the proper PC application seems a lot better than I remember it being, and I had a very enjoyable couple of hours last night hopping through a load of music I wouldn't normally listen to thanks to the way it puts 10 suggested artists next to the top 10 most popular tracks by the artist you're currently listening to.

I should probably connect it up to Facebook so I can SEE WHAT MY FRIENDS ARE LISTENING TO and it promises not to post anything without my consent.

Getting some playlists on the go would be a good idea too, I had a few left from 2010 but they weren't that good in the main, IIRC you can get them from the community so the spadework has been done.

I'll probably go for the £14.99 six accounts option, so Mrs Hearthly and Hearthly Jnr can have it on their PCs. (You can have up to six Premium accounts for £14.99 on the same 'master' account, as long as everyone is at the same address.)

I'm not sure if Spotify is the best music service but Apple Music is out because, y'know, iTunes on PC, lol. Google Play is another option which TBH I didn't really investigate but I wasn't massively impressed with it on the couple of occasions I've watched a film on there.

Anyway, it seems good.

I got a free year of Premium when I upgraded my wife's mobile deal

I really like it, we can choose music on a smartphone and send it to any Amazon Echo in the house as well as my A/V Receiver

Just never use it though, we don't really listen to that much music.

I did upgrade to Spotify Premium Family, although not without some ballache.

Mrs Hearthly was easy as she had an old Spotify account from years ago, so I just upgraded my account to Premium Family, sent her an invite, she got the email, clicked on the link, signed into her account, boom, job done.

Hearthly Jnr was the fun part as she had no existing account. So I signed her up for a new account, when you go to the Spotify homepage on the web you actually get this:

This is down to shitty IOM IP ranges (the same issue that gimps the Google Play Store unless you VPN your device), but it did allow me to sign up for a new account for Jnr, but then located her in the US, so when I sent her the family invite it said she was in the wrong country, and then refused to let me change her country to the UK. (There are no options to choose your location when you sign up, it decides where you are. Premium Family states that the accounts are only for people who live at the same address, let alone in the same country.)

Oddly there was the option to change her country to the UK in the dropdown list (only USA and UK were listed) but the account page errored every time I tried to do it. According to the FAQ you should be able to change the country on a free account for up to 14 days, but it didn't work. On a Premium account you can change the country at will, but of course I couldn't get the account up to Premium because it wouldn't let her accept the family invite.....

In the end I couldn't find any way around it, so using one of my other email addresses I VPN-ed my Shield tablet with a UK IP, signed up for another Spotify account which was homed correctly in the UK, sent the Family invite to that, and then logged that account in on Jnr's PC and then she had a Premium Family account too.

It's not quite ideal because her account isn't now using her email address but one of mine, but that's no biggy really.

With that out of the way it does all work splendidly, and we now have three entirely independent Premium accounts for £14.99 per month. I've installed Spotify on every computer in the house so we can have music on wherever we are. I've already started putting together CHOPLEY'S AWESOME PLAYLIST which will have all the best music ever on it.

As Spotify no longer offer their 'Unlimited' plan (£4.99 a month for no ads, but no mobile), I hope they don't force me to switch over to Premium at some point. Given that I use Spotify every day, I'd be certain to upgrade, but I don't need the additional features of higher quality or mobile access.

OK this is sort of getting into some sort of shape now, but were it a piece of software I'd still call it a 0.1 alpha release.

Some basic ordering has been done, and I've got a decent chunk of the artists I want in there (although many are still missing), but it's a looooong way off complete.

The basic rule of CHOPLEY'S AWESOME PLAYLIST is that there can only be one entry from any single artist, so it's like, you really like David Bowie? That's nice, but there can only be one David Bowie track on the list.

(Note that the same person/people can crop up multiple times, so a track from Pulp and a solo artist track from Jarvis Cocker is fine.)

There is also an overarching concept that it's music you'd want on a jukebox in the pub, or when driving in the car, so for example whilst I think 'Disintegration' by The Cure is one of the finest albums ever created, none of the tracks on that album really fit here, so instead it's 'Just Like Heaven' off 'Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me'.

There's also some embryonic 'mood shifting' in place, in that it winds down a bit towards the end, but it's crude and horribly imperfect at the moment.

Also note that music largely finished in the early 2000s for me, but I have been trying to make the list a bit more contemporary.

Anyway, all you have to do is copy and paste this into Spotify's search box.

This continues to evolve, now up to 142 tracks (so 142 unique artists), with a definite 'wind down' zone at the end, the rest of it is still in a state of flux though, and some artist's entries have changed numerous times already.

Anyway, have a scan down the list and see if this is the sort of thing you like, because if it is, you'll probably like this.

I'm not sure 'Tame' by The Pixies is the friendliest opener, but fuck it I love that track.

I am completely open to suggestions, and am very much aware there are still LOADS of 'must have' artists still missing. Last time I looked it was being 'followed' by 5 people, so international recognition is imminent I feel.

I have generally made an effort to go for a track that isn't the track that everyone would automatically think of if you gave them the artist's name and screamed in their ear TELL ME A TRACK BY THIS BAND NOW MOTHERFUCKER, but at the same time I've not been deliberately picking tracks that they did in some sort of weird experimental phase whilst living on a canal barge in Utrecht and injecting a kilo of finest heroin every day.

I'm open to and welcome suggestions on both (a) Missing artists and (b) Replacement track options.

(I've shared the playlist with family and friends and they've made some great suggestions in both departments.)

At the end of the day I just want a kick-ass playlist filled to the brim with ace music.

Crystal is the only good New Order tune, but it is very good. It's like how the Manic Street Preachers seemed to pour every ounce of their talent into Motorcycle Emptiness and had nothing left so just churned out terrible shite.

They're all quite tricky artists to pick an individual track from though, I mean, you could go for the three obvious choices, Teen Spirit, Blue Monday (or True Faith) and maybe what, Losing My Religion or Everybody Hurts - but (a) Too obvious and (b) I don't think they're the best of the bands anyway.

In Nirvana's case Nevermind hasn't stood the test of time very well IMO, it's just a bit too over-produced and 'shiny' somehow, even though it's still a great album I don't much enjoy listening to it these days. So there's either Bleach or In Utero (if we're picking from studio albums). Bleach I do still enjoy and there are some definite options on there, but In Utero for me is Nirvana's finest album. I remember buying the CD as soon as it was released and listening to the whole album in my shitty student house with a friend, and commenting afterwards words to the effect of 'Well that was brilliant but they're not going to make another album, because Kurt won't be around for it'.

Picking a track off it is hard though, I was minded to go with Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (I certainly wouldn't have Heart Shaped Box or All Apologies, which were intended as gentle introductions to the 'noise' of the rest of the album) but settled on Pennyroyal Tea because it's a song I used to listen to over and over on my Walkman whilst walking around some of Manchester's less salubrious neighbourhoods (which probably wasn't very smart), I only found out later that it kind of meant what I'd thought it did.

I really hate that sort of 80s synth style that all older New Order tunes use so none of their 'classic' stuff appeals to me in the slightest. Those fucking shitty 'drum' noises; just yuck.
