In an effort to cheer myself up, I've been looking at the honeymoon plans. Part of the time, we're staying in Volcano village, Hawaii, next to the Volcano National Park.

And wouldn't you know it, just a few miles from where we are staying, a bit of the Earth has decided to go "BOOM!"

Image

Yay! Can't wait. I suspect our luggage and quite possibly, drinks, will have fresh volcanic glass in.

MaliA - chuck us a copy. I promise to stroke my chin and nod approvingly, without understanding what the hell you are on about.

I finally have my house in a state where things are 'done'.

All the rooms are decorated to our taste, the kitchen and bathroom are completely new and finished, the garden is finished and has plants properly growing and stuff.

Our fish tank is in place with happy fish in.

It's all good.

I don't recognise the breed of rabbit, but go for the biggest you can afford and be arsed to clean out.
Just make sure it's stable with a slanting roof so raid and such runs off an overhang at the back. Mine all had felt on top.
Runs big enough for it to hop around, again as big as you are comfortable with, and make sure it has shelter in the run..also some rabbits are little buggers for trying to dig out, so watch em.
I'd suggest more sawdust than straw as bedding but that is preference really, I just don't like them getting poked in the face by tough straw.

I used to breed rabbits...I should put that in the wtf thread..

Yay! A lionhead! I has an albino lionhead called Twitch.

1st tip: They deserve to be house rabbits, you can't keep something that cute in a hutch outside. Rabbits are easily litter trained and you'd only need a standard wire cage from Pets@home or somewhere, just for them to sleep in at nights/during the workday. Long and flat works best.

2nd tip: Keep an eye on their teeth. Domestic rabbits in general can have teeth problems causing untold misery for the poor blighters if they overgrow. Both the front and back teeth.

3rd tip: If they let you, grooming is essential. If tooth problems occur it can cause the drainage channels going from their eyes to their mouth to distort and cause blockages, leading to runny eyes that need cleaning daily. The long fur on any rabbit can lead to bottom problems, so keep them clean to avoid flystrike. Twitch gets bathed every day.

That thing looks like it'll need grooming at least four times a day..insane. Does look cute though.

Oh, 4th tip: don't use sawdust for bedding. Wood based cat litter all the way, unless you want to spend 15 hours a day picking it out of his fur.

Sawdust out of lionhead fur and carpet = industrial strength vacuum every 2 hours.

Well I never had a lionhead but it's not a problem to get off the carpet imo, I never had issues.

This thread reminded me of my own honeymoon, which was the best week of my life.

We rented a car and drove from the wife's parents' place in Idaho, down through Utah to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, stayed a couple of nights and then drove back. Six days in all and 1,408 miles. I drove it all because the wife can't and when I was getting tired each day we stopped somewhere and got a motel room. We went to a million Wal-Marts and got toys and clothes. We had unexpectedly brilliant pizza in Nephi. We saw a giant inflatable Mormon and slept on the best bed ever in Provo. Elton John, Rob Zombie and Dolly Parton on the stereo. Gas stations miles from anywhere. Beef jerky and M&Ms. Tumbleweeds exploding on contact with the front bumper. And we saw some of the most spectacular views the world has to offer. Canyons and mesas and mountains and valleys and desert and snow.

I guess it doesn't really sound like much, driving up and down the Interstate for a few days, but I loved it.

You have to weigh it up. Small hutch outside in the cold with hardly any attention, vs night time sleepies in the cage and full range of the house during the day. Twitch loves stretching out in front of the fire, using whoever's lying on the floor as a climbing frame, and throwing around any magazines or letters he can find.

I'll fob her off with 'guinea pigs in shed' idea that I had.

Stick hutch in shed, let guinea pigs run through tube, exiting through side of shed onto lawn.

I've got major issues with buying a pet you're supposed to care for and dumping them as far out of sight as possible in the cold.

Yes, I agree, so this probably won't happen.

Besides, I'm highly allergic to animals.

Funnily enough, both me and the missus are allergic to Twitch. Not his fault and I'm certainly not going to get rid of him because of it. Just means anti-histamines throughout the year for us. Plus it's nice to be lying on the floor reading an old AP or YS and a massive ball of white fluff bounds over and starts licking your forehead.

Can rabbits and cats coexist? Or will one just eat the other? We have a couple of cats, and the missus wants a rabbit as well.

Note to self:

A bit more explanation is needed vis a vis an indoor rabbits residence when you send an email saying

"We could keep it in the oven".

Well one's a predator and one's prey. I suppose it's dependent on the nature of your cat, but I certainly wouldn't leave them alone together.

I agree with this. I was upset when we had to move Holly outdoors. But not as distressed as she was.

Listen to Dimrill, he knows what he's talking about here too.

Also this.

Rabbits are fairly communicative creatures, but not as we'd expect. Rabbits are often too proud to accept a grooming unless you've asked them first. (Tap the ground in front of them, and if they lower their heads, that's an invititation to groom).
Do not clean their chin at best, they'll be insulted by this and start licking you, at worst you'll have a furious rabbit clawing you.

Shewolf wrote:

I used really soft hay for both my Guinea pigs and my rabbit. soft enough not to have that problem, no problems cleaning, and very comfortable (and hide-in-able) for them.

Quote:

Depends. Some can bond really well, although I wouldn't want to risk it. Dogs and rabbits, no.

Animals are fine to be kept outside in a cage. In the winter though I brought them either into a shelter/garage etc or had them as close to the house and a wall as possible. They were fine.
They got handled and fussed and groomed and taken indoors everyday anyway.

That's why I use the Bunny Hotel in Brocton. Karen looks after Twitch when we're gone for a week, and she'll probably be having our rats as well :D

I've been wondering what to do when uni finishes, a bunny hotel would be an excellent idea! I really miss our old one Hazel, she was a rescue bunny and watching her get more confident as she learned we weren't going to hurt her was aces.

I didn't realise you had rats too, probably a good thing from when I dreamt about you and Stu in one night. That would have been even more freaky if they had BOTH contained rats. 8)
