I didn't realise that cthulhu was such a modern creation - I thought it was a character from folklore, like the kappa.

There was an amusing short story by Neil Gaiman, which was a hybrid of the old Peter Cook & Dudley Moore two-men-in-a-pub routines and, well, Lovecraft. I believe you can find it in his Smoke & Mirrors collection.
