Some draw more than others, I think. The shower in our last rented place failed and the warranty service engineer refused to commission it; the cabling behind it was only rated for 9kW, not 11.5kW. Said it's a common problem, amateurs buy them as uprated models in B&Q and fit them without thinking they should uprate the mains feed at the same time.

What's the power rating on an electric cooker, anyway? I've never had to deal with one (gas hobs FTW).

I think the rules have changed now, where you have to get professionals to fit stuff and do structural work. Or it can void you house insurance and the terms of your rent and mortgage.

It is the reason electritions have to provide certification for the work now
Yeah, you shouldn't add sockets and things like that yourself anymore. Not sure what the position is for simply replacing a cooker though.

I can check with my mate who is a sparky..

But I would think you would not be allowed as it is not as simple as plugging in a socket or changing a light, also cookers need a hefty cooker

Fitting an appliance requires an NEIC certified installer, and a cooker must be separately fused. Anything else will void your insurance (and is actually a criminal offence for the installer, if he's not certified).

It's just replacing the existing cooker, so (in theory) all of the wiring and fittings should be present already.

As long as Gaz's brother's certified, there's no problem - right?

Post subject:  Re: Bits & Bobs 5

If it's like for like, I think it's allowed. But if its 'new' I dunno. What I did was t get a 4way extension lead, and suspend it over the rafters in the garage to run the bike battery charger/inspection lamp/ circular saw from.

Correct - as long as the wiring is the new standard, otherwise he should (technically) refuse to fit it.

I'm sorry, but I havent kept up with the current legislation. A shocking turn of events, but watt it is, regulation is good. Ohm insurance is worth checking out though, in case it isn't covered, or if someone diodes.

Replacement of an existing cooker is not covered by Part P and is not building control notifiable.

People just live in terror of anything technical these days don't they? If your brother was a sparky he'll connect the wires to the right terminals and tighten them properly, and then nothing will go wrong.

I don't think it's so much the fear of the technical, it's the fear and confusion surrounding the over-legislation of it all, especially in a rented property.

I was wondering this one as well.

If it is like for like it is fine, it is only if you are fitting a new spur off a mains line is it an issue.

I just found a very suspicious wreck in EVE, that had been left there with a Strip Mining fitting and two T2 cargo expanders. Totally seemed like a bait trap, but there was nobody nearby as afaik you can't put cargo into a wreck as bait.

So, I did stoled it, and now have free stuff worth 5m isk. The original owner isn't online, and has only been alive for 17 days. All round very weird. I'm now hiding in my station until the aggro counter runs out.

I'm not really gonna get it checked out, I just wanted to use the "grill" pun somewhere :P

I can wire it up myself if need be, I did the original cooker that's in there and that's lasted fine for the three years I've been living there so far.

No the property, plus you should have an electrical safety certificate. Provided by your landlord. I think it is every 12 - 24 months.
