Well, that's annoying. Turns out that some fuck on our (shared) hosting server has got a script running that's vulnerable to attack from bastard script kiddies, and as a consequence there are now malicious files dotted over every single account of ours on that server. All in folders with 0777 permissions, obv.

Unfortunately, unless I'm missing something, there's nothing I can do about it as having permissions other than 0777 on a folder means PHP can't write to it :(

You know you can amend your profile so that you don't have to see signatures by unticking "display signatures", right? You grumpy sod.

Not at all. Make the file or directory 0700 and set the ownership to be whichever use the web server runs as.

I don't mind peoples sigs, I like to learn about peoples blogs etc. All I'm saying is that the stupid X-Box things are huge, annoying and horribly ruin the flow of the pages. Not to mention the smug cartoon faces.

Just my opinion, but their outbreak is rather akin to a horrible rash being inflicted on the forum.

I do think the standard MGC NXE theme is a bit on the big side, which is why I'm using the mini version in my sig.

Yeah, no reason you can't. Do a
Code:
ps aux | grep apache

and the first column will be the username the Apache daemon is running at. For example, on my server (note that I run lighttpd though instead of Apache):
Code:
rich@davidad1:~/www$ ps aux | grep ligh
www-data  3343  0.0  1.6   4152  2108 ?        S    Nov17   0:09 /usr/local/sbin/lighttpd -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf

So on any directory I need the webserver to write to, I do
Code:
chown -R www-data <whatever>
chmod u+r,u+w <whatever>

Ah, dammit. You're going to have to be root to do the chown step. This may not work on a shared box. Try putting "sudo" in front of those last two commands and see what happens, but I doubt they've bothered to configure sudo for this sort of use case. Other than that you'll need to ask the hosting provider to do it or, uhhh, get grown up hosting?

Well, we're on reseller accounts which is grown up enough for us. I'm looking at dedicated alternatives now, though. Only reason we've not gone dedicated before is because of the extra time needed to admin the box. I'm stretched enough as it is.

100x100 reduced by a factor of 100 million is considerably smaller than 1x1, you donkey.

I'm off down to Nodnol to see Sigur Rós. Ace.

And in other news: I twisted my bad arm last night and it hurts. A lot. I think I'll take my co-codamol with me.

edit: and my avatar looks like I'm getting head.

edit again: I ordered GTA IV yesterday from Amazon, and plumped for the free delivery. It just arrived. Royal Mail, you've almost redeemed yourselves.

I like my signature thingy very much indeed.

I'm having a shit day so far today and not very happy at all.

Went to workshop, got through that OK, went for lunch and don't have my lunch. Got a lecture on mortgages later.

In bad mood.

Does BETEO shape the news agenda?

Not a while back, we talked about Woolies.

Now this.

[blog] also, I've just had to film a 2.5 hour conference for the craft council. It was boring and I had to stand up all the way through. I had to follow the fuckers around with the camera (on the tripod, panning and such, not like a steadicam job) because 2 out the 3 talkers wouldn't stand still. My back hurts. [/blog]

Thought about getting a professional in?

I did a 2 day conference last month (the day I "did" Littlejohn) and it was so dull I can't even remember the subject.

I think, according to the uni, I am the professional. Although how they expect me to do a decent job with an on-camera microphone in a large hall that holds over 300 people, I'll never know.

p.s. Chinny, love the sig, but it's a bit big isn't it?

That sig is genius, Chinny. Could you make it bigger?

In other news, I just rang to cancel my Lovefilm account, and the poor girl at the end of the phone kept having really bad coughing fits. Bless her.

Conferences need at least two cameras (the second one doesn't need to be manned, it can just be on a wide shot), and a set of professional radio mics.

Never use an on-camera mic. Ever ever ever ever ever. Sound is more important than the visuals.

"Good news everyone! Nervous Pete has just got an interview for the position of scale 3 assistant librarian. It's for peanuts, but they're bigger peanuts than he's getting now as lowly library assistant! Tragically, he'll be competing against some pretty heavy guns of the library service and is probably doomed. Oh my, dear dear. Ah well!" (etc.)
