Turns out that some fuck on our (shared) hosting server has got a script running that's vulnerable to attack from bastard script kiddies, and as a consequence there are now malicious files dotted over every single account of ours on that server. All in folders with 0777 permissions, obv.

Unfortunately, unless I'm missing something, there's nothing I can do about it as having permissions other than 0777 on a folder means PHP can't write to it

Try putting "sudo" in front of those last two commands and see what happens, but I doubt they've bothered to configure sudo for this sort of use case. I did a 2 day conference last month (the day I "did" Littlejohn) and it was so dull I can't even remember the subject.

I think, according to the uni, I am the professional. Although how they expect me to do a decent job with an on-camera microphone in a large hall that holds over 300 people, I'll never know.
