Media player will play media files with audio but seemingly no other media player (say vlc for example). Which makes it difficult to play DVD files from the hard drive.

Any ideas?

Every file we've tried. VOB, divx/xvid. But it's mainly the annoyance regarding dvd files. Media player can do sound and video for xvid with the codec involved but all other media players can't play the audio on anything.

When you say they don't play, do they not do anything whatsoever, or does the time remaining tick down just without sound?

Have you tried those files on another PC? Checked all the codecs are installed with GSpot?

Location: Nottingham. Again. No, wait, I'm back in Manchester.
What kind of soundcard are you using? Vista often resets my M-Audio 1010, have a look in the volume mixer and make sure it's outputting to the right, um, output. Yes.

The soundcard being used is the on board sound in the pc. It's the only card it has. Mixer has all volumes up.

The odd thing is the way windows media player will give out sound but such as VLC won't.

Annoying if you want to play a DVD from the hard drive or a nero MP4 file.

I take it you've checked your VLC preferences and there's nothing weird going on?
I was going to ask if you could play audio files ok through it, but I just checked and I get no volume. ?:|

It's not just a VLC problem though. Winamp, Media Player Classic, Quicktime, VLC no sound. Media player sound (and vision where codecs are available).

This isn't my PC but a friend's that I happen to use a bit.

Check the volume control with the app running, Vista does it per app. If they're there and up, wiggle them a bit.
