Thanks Shin! That means a fair bit that does. :luv:

Well I'm on 29,361 words now and have been typing nearly all the evening. I'm going a bit bonkers to be honest and I'm writing some mental scenes involving a giant floating diamond in the sky, (no campy cut-out of Queen Victoria though), gibbering long-limbed things versus buddy cops, bird woman and heroine in a small American town. Death toll mounting, bonkersness increasing. Soundtrack to evening's writings been Primal Scream, Howie Gelb, Mozart's Bassoon concertos, Postal Service and DJ Shadow.

Another cup of tea I think. Yaargh. Can't go to bed until 12:00 and at least 32,000 words I think. It'll mean I'm still behind schedule but with further psycho effort the target will still be attainable.

Stupid drinky computer gamey weekend. Grrrr. >:( :D >:(

Good luck Pete. :) If all else fails, repeatedly use this and copy and paste the results. *

*after running it through a spell-checker, obviously... 'relunctantly' indeed.

Heh! A brilliant distraction! Thanks Devilman. The beloved object was 'boombox', adding much comedy value btw. :)

We decided on a colour? :S

Now on 30,699 words! I've just had a creative run with a big ton of exposition that, for the first time ever, I've felt entirely comfortable in delivering. This is because I've found that pretty much everything I've written so far has subconciously twined together to deliver this hidden plot. Hurrah! (Well, hurrah until somebody picks a big hole in it, obviously.)

Now listening to Pulp's 'His & Hers'.

In conclusion, if you want a bird woman to say this:

(Spoilered for Shin who's reading it, bless her)

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
“And so we return,” said Aleta, her face red with a quiet fury.

“Yep, we’ve returned. They’ve lost their romanticism, their worship of nature and so now they become easy meat. When God was anchored to the land he was a threat; now they’ve exiled him to their little theme park in the clouds and he holds no sway over his own creation. Metaphorically or theologically speaking, I’m not sure which.” Tom swivelled on his arse to look up at Aleta, jiggled the dice in his hand and grinned. “We couldn’t have done this a thousand years ago you know. They hit this sweet spot back in the middle ages when they loved the land, tamed enough to no longer be feared yet vital and huge enough for them to tie their souls to and hug and hold and cherish. That was why we left. We were muscled out you see. And now we return from the soft spaces, from the veil beyond, from the…”

“Yes, well fucking done. You’ve fucking return you cunting fucks,” shouted Aleta, towering over him. “You know what I love about humanity, you know what turned me to them all these past years I’ve been studying and preparing for this great lie of a role you gave me, protecting your cocking ‘chosen one’? I’ve been enjoying their language. Back home its caw-bloody-caw or ‘Well met Sir Cunt,’ well here there’s more language than you can fit in your head, more emotion and thought and idea than we ever had in our land of magic and long-named fuckwits. They’ve lost their roots but they’ve freed their minds at least and…” and here her words ran out and she fell to gasping and cawing.

It may be complete guff, but it's my kind of guff. And the story has shotguns.

Writing in Shot in the Dark cafe bar. 36,000+ words now, 2,700 of them this evening. Eyes are bogglng in this low, fashionable light. Fun novelty using the PC but SOMEWHERE OTHER in borrowing this laptop, mind.

14,000 words to go, and four days. Erk.

Yeah!

*Smack!*

Boo ya! How'dya like me now!? (etc.)

I did feel a bit naseous about four hours ago trying to make the word count. Fortunately a nip to the chip shop fixed that for me. Can't believe I wrote about 8,000 words today!

And not one cornflake Dimrill, shame on you!

Lots of, "He turned," and "She turned," though. And plenty of "She smiled suddenly at the thought." And even more, "It was as if..."

I amz proude hak riter!

The film rights to a man nearly driving himself mad whilst trying to write a novel in a month? It'd be an ideal sequel to my in-progress project, about a man nearly driving himself mad whilst trying to complete MGS4.

Hey hey!

Just had a night out with the fellow nano-ers. Good fun, 'cept for one bonkers moment where a girlfriend of a good friend nano-writer called us all 'self important' rather acidly just as they both were leaving and mate said, "Good time! See you around! etc.". I've been called an idiot and an incompetent in my life, but never 'self important' or anything like that. It oddly hurt. And was completely baffling. I mean, subjects were: Buffy, Firefly, geekery, sci-fi and fantasy novels, Barry Island = Hellmouth, finding kitchen-sink drama tricky to write and less fun than prior referred genres and getting obsessive and hitting word counts, errr... I can't think of any 'self-important' areas. 8) :S

So, yeah. Er. One of those genuine WTF? moments. Specially since it was from someone I've had good small-scale nights in with before and is a writer herself, albeit only of kitchen sink. I guess I figured something was wrong when she didn't join in any conversation even when I gave big 'Hey! Here's a subject you like, let's talk about this' subtle entries. She'd offer a couple of lines and then shrink away again.

ANYWAY. A good night apart from that, and one which happily recovered thanks to more pretty shameless and fun geek talk. I mean, four university/post-grad girls and just me and I'm not going to indulge in their geek talkery? Madness to even go against it. Pleasant drinking and further meets (presumably sans nay-sayer) set up.

So, Shin! If you PM me your email addy I can send you the novel as an attachment, which makes more sense than me feeding you 3,000 word bits PM after PM for the next 15 days. :)

Phew, well just got an email from my mate. Basically she had a bad day at work, was a bit drunk and has some long standing problems of her own, and now feels incredibly guilty and embarrassed about the entire thing and is a bit upset about what she said to me. The two of them talked about it a long times and she's agreed to work on the entire aggression thing.

I've met with her a few times before and we've had good natters and mutual writing riffs, so it was a bit eyebrow raisingly surprising. I've emailed back telling my mate to tell her not to stress, and it's water under the bridge, and if things fell apart after one bad thing between friends then the world would be a pretty shabby yadda yadda yadda. So, case closed. Hopefully.

Right, back on to positive things!

So Pete (also anyone else), the next Nanowrimo starts soon - will you be having another crack?

Heaven help me, I will be. I have no idea what about though. I have a few half-baked ideas. A sentient second hand bookshop that abducts people to work in it until they die and won't let them out, and is sort of the paragon of bookshops. A Minnesota diner in the middle of a snowstorm, the temperature dropping inside despite all efforts at heating the place seemingly brought about by a silent tramp hunched over a cup of coffee. A man obsessed with the paintings of L S Lowry who moves up North hoping to be immortalised foreground left in a crowd scene. A village where a man takes photos with a camera found in a second hand shop, and the results are of a time-gone-by, and who becomes determined to see his parents when they were young and how they met. And a book about a strange pilgrim in 1930's England, who magically changes his surroundings back into the ones immortalised in certain landscape paintings.

But all those are sketchy thoughts.

I'll hopefully have something more concrete when it starts. Anyone else up for trying it? You, Agent Starling? :)

I liked the Lowry idea. I have been thinking about it this last half an hour or so and keep imagining how it might unfold.

Do you think you'll publish on Lulu, perhaps?

I literally cannot decide between the ideas, though I really like the Lowry idea too. One of Lowry's efforts was the first painting I remember seeing, in a Doctor's waiting room when I was small back in Huddersfield. For some reason I was mesmerised by it. I'd like to work it into a larger idea. The notion of time-slips, nostalgia and finding an idyll are also very compelling for me, so the notion of 1930's or 1950's England are very compelling for me. At the same time there was a lot of poverty, and it was far from the Daily Mail absurdity its sometimes painted as, so it is quite meaty subject matter. Maybe I could combine the two somehow.

What is Lulu, Mimi? I only know the wretched Scouse singer with the hideous, scraping voice by that name.

Lulu is a print on demand service. If I could ever get my magazine to print I'd recommend them, but basically it's a no setup cost option for self publishing.

Yes, this time I'm actually in the country when it starts, so will be giving it a good go. :)

This I love.

:this:

Also it puts me slightly in mind of an ace Sapphire & Steel episode.

I won't be trying this year's Nano myself, though I do like to pen the odd story and such, it's just I know I don't have the necessary willpower to knuckle down night after night and bash it all out.

I look forward to this thread being updated though, as those of you who are going for it come on here and give your latest word counts.

It sounds like a book I have read, where a young lad finds a camera , and the pictures it produces seem nonsensical at first, but then it appears to be showing a dog coming closer to the camera, the boy takes it to a a nicknack store in town that everyone shuns for reasons that become apparent later in the story. I'm a bit vague on the details, I wonder if anyone knows what it is?
