Keeley Hawes to star as Doctor Who villain

Keeley Hawes is to take on a villainous role in Doctor Who - as a banker.

The actress will guest star in an episode in Peter Capaldi's first series as the Time Lord.

"Anyone watching the amazing Line Of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year," said Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat.

"And now it's about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker."

Hawes, who previously starred in BBC dramas Ashes to Ashes and Spooks, plays Ms Delphox, who is described as "a powerful out of this world character with a dark secret".

The story, written by Steve Thompson, sees the twelfth Doctor and his companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), meet Ms Delphox when they arrive "on a strange and puzzling planet".

The episode is directed by Douglas Mackinnon, whose previous work includes Line of Duty and Doctor Who.

Hawes said: "I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I've had a lot of fun playing."

The story will be screened in the autumn.

I suspect she'll be almost exactly the same as Dervla Kirwan's pantomime villain character in The Next Doctor.

The BBC has today confirmed the much-anticipated eighth series of the hit sci-fi drama Doctor Who will land on BBC One on Saturday, 23 August.

The feature length premiere episode entitled “Deep Breath” will see Peter Capaldi take on one of TV’s most iconic roles as the Twelfth Doctor, alongside Jenna Coleman as his companion Clara.

An exclusive 15 second TV teaser showing a first-look glimpse of the new Doctor and Clara aired this evening on BBC One at 8.00pm confirming the date… You can see it right now!

Corporation's commercial arm appeals to fans not to pass on titles and plots after the full scripts for Peter Capaldi's opening stories are made public online

BBC Worldwide has apologised to Doctor Who fans after five scripts from the upcoming eighth series have been leaked online.

The Corporation’s commercial arm BBC Worldwide issued a statement to RadioTimes.com pleading for the public not to share the material after the first five scripts of the new series, which will begin broadcasting on August 23, surfaced online. They are the opening feature length episode Deep Breath by Steven Moffat as well as four others.

RadioTimes.com has seen the scripts and knows the titles but will not be making them public.

The statement read: “BBC Worldwide is currently investigating a security issue around Doctor Who Series 8 where unfinished material has inadvertently been made public. We deeply regret this and apologise to all the show's fans, the BBC and the cast and crew who have worked tirelessly making the series.

“We would like to make a plea to anyone who might have any of this material and spoilers associated with it not to share it with a wider audience so that everyone can enjoy the show as it should be seen when it launches. We know only too well that Doctor Who fans are the best in the world and we thank them for their help with this and their continued loyalty."

The scripts are understood to have been disseminated online after being sent to the BBC Worldwide’s newly opened Latin America headquarters in Miami for translation.

“The opening episode is being simulcast globally so of course translations have to be prepared in advance,” said a BBC source.

Deep Breath, the feature-length premiere episode of the eighth series, will air on BBC1 on Saturday August 23.

However fans are being given a chance to catch the first glimpse of Capaldi’s debut on the show at a Cardiff premiere on August 7, weeks before it arrives on TV. The lunchtime event will be held at St David’s Hall in the city and will kickstart the drama’s publicity world tour.

Oh, hello. Who's this? Took these during my lunchbreak, after a tip-off from Lord Rixondale who saw them prepping on the way to work. There were two takes. The first I was on the other side of the Tardis. I saw them leave the scene on the far side, nipped across by barging politely through crowd during the short gap between takes and placed myself in the exact right spot which was inexplicably far less crowded. Taken with a really wide angle fixed lens, so no zooming for me! Rejigged my website, btw.

Bring a book to it, like I do, that's my advice. I felt good when I asked people around me if I was in anyone's way, and a cute girl thanked me and said there weren't many gentlemen around nowadays who'd think of asking. Take that papparazzi ethos! Zaphod, yeah, that's a split second before and from someone a little to the side of me. There was ComicBookGuy with a DSLR next to me, which amused me. I'm glad I got a nice expression and shot (even if Clara was a little out of depth-of-field, oooh, that eats me up, still, kinda cute) - I honestly couldn't have posted a fudged or far-away pic. Not ego, its just that... ... okay, it's ego.

Yes. I let out an exasperated sigh when I heard that rubbish villainess idea. Getting quite bored with the Doc going up against heartless corporations or evil capitalists now. We get it. The Nu-Who trope of smarmy arrogant power-dressing women selling out humanity but having inexplicably lax personal security are also monumentally tedious. How about the Doc against some evil anarchists, eh? Or a demented Dadist? Or Robbie Rotten? Or a hypnotic carpet that attempts to take over the world? Just... something DIFFERENT. Best film villainess ever is probably Milady from the Three Musketeers. I haven't seen a Who villainess come close to that boo-hiss evilness, yet.
