Peter Capaldi begins filming on Doctor Who

The BBC has issued the following press release:
The new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, stepped on set today for his first full day of filming as production begins on series 8 of the hit BBC show.

10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first glimpse of Capaldi in one of TV’s most iconic roles in the festive special ‘The Time of the Doctor’, which saw Matt Smith hang-up his bow tie after 4 years in the role.

Capaldi was revealed as the Doctor in a live BBC One show in August, after months of speculation about the next Doctor’s identity.

Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said:
“New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added:
“First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.”

Accompanying the Doctor on his adventures will be companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman.

The first episode of series 8 has been written by Steven Moffat with the second episode penned by Phil Ford. These are the first episodes that Peter will shoot and are directed by Ben Wheatley.

Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said:

Filming is taking place in Cardiff until August 2014. Doctor Who is executive produced by Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and produced by Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett. It is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

Found The Deadly Assassin and Visitation on DVD in a local charity should for a couple of quid each, either worth watching?

1) Sylvester McCoy recently spoke at a convention and revealed he knows who the new Master is and he will be great so the instant speculation off the tweet is that he is the new Master

Keeley Hawes to star as Doctor Who villain

Keeley Hawes is to take on a villainous role in Doctor Who - as a banker.

The actress will guest star in an episode in Peter Capaldi's first series as the Time Lord.

"Anyone watching the amazing Line Of Duty will know that Keeley Hawes is having one hell of year," said Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat.

"And now it's about to get even better as she achieves the greatest villainy yet attempted on Doctor Who: she plays a banker."

Hawes, who previously starred in BBC dramas Ashes to Ashes and Spooks, plays Ms Delphox, who is described as "a powerful out of this world character with a dark secret".

The story, written by Steve Thompson, sees the twelfth Doctor and his companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman), meet Ms Delphox when they arrive "on a strange and puzzling planet".

The episode is directed by Douglas Mackinnon, whose previous work includes Line of Duty and Doctor Who.

Hawes said: "I am delighted to join Doctor Who and to be working with this incredible team. Ms Delphox is a great character and someone I've had a lot of fun playing."

The story will be screened in the autumn.

I suspect she'll be almost exactly the same as Dervla Kirwan's pantomime villain character in The Next Doctor.

A touch late to the party, but whilst I enjoyed the Christmas Special whilst watching it, I couldn't help but get the feeling that the part of my brain that simply wants to enjoy it because it's Doctor Who was engaged fully the whole time. I wasn't so keen when I thought back on it. The overriding plot with the Doctor protecting that village for hundreds of years was total bobbins, I hated how easily they resolved the regeneration limit and I detested the fact that little bit of story-telling was even felt necessary. I still don't really understand why Ten was considered to have had two regenerations - I mean I get the whole "shot by Dalek, used severed arm to regenerate into his existing form" thing (which was shit when it happened, but I digress), but it was the sort of thing that could've been ignored, leaving Capaldi as the Doctor's final form. It would've made far more sense with 'that' scene in the 50th anniversary. It would've meant that scene involved every incarnation of the Doctor (until the regeneration limit was truly resolved), which would've been far more poignant instead of how now it's been shown to have simply have been an arbitrary number of incarnations present. People seem really down on Clara and I don't really get it, but then I never understood the dislike for Martha either. We never saw any of Amy Pond's family and she never had much back story beyond being "the girl who waited" and yet people seemed to love her. I think overall I prefer the Moffat era to the RTD one, but I'm getting pretty tired of him now too. I re-watched The Pandorica Opens the other night and it struck me as being a decent way to wind up that series, but the series that followed it, with the Silence and the Impossible Astronaut and all that shit confuses me even now. He's really gone off the boil. Another thing I thought about recently was how much I used to detest the constant gay/bisexual references in RTD-era Who. I appreciate that's possibly a rather controversial thing to say, but every single episode seemed to make a massive deal of at least one gay/bi couple in it. It even grated on some LGBT friends of mine to be fair. But now it's gone totally the other way in the Moffat-era, and I don't feel to happy about that either. Every major female character in it seems to want to sex up the Doctor.

Filming until August - I guess that means no new series until the autumn at the very earliest then. In other news, I've been rewatching the whole of NuWho recently. Series 4 with Catherine Tate is pretty much solid gold all the way through. Good job really, as apart from about three episodes, series 3 was largely terrible.

I have fond memories of The Deadly Assassin , but dont remember anything about Visitation and looking it up on Wikipedia reminds me that its not one i liked very much however I've not seen either of them in a long time.

Watched The Deadly Assassin earlier, and very enjoyable it was too. The 'wordiness' of the first two parts in particular and earnest performances from the supporting cast were a pleasant change from modem DW, I must say.

Aye, The Deadly Assassin is cracking stuff. And funnily enough my suspense was so entirely suspended that the climactic final act bit seemed full of danger and excitement, despite it being all just camera tilting and rumbly sound effects and not-actually-convincing wrestling about. But the dialogue is the jewell in the crown. Lots of fun banter and happily not the point-scoring kind which tends to overwhelm nu-Who from time to time. Plus the 'dream sequences' are ace. Thinking of picking up Pyramids of Mars cheap. Any good?

Oh, hello. Who's this? Took these during my lunchbreak, after a tip-off from Lord Rixondale who saw them prepping on the way to work. There were two takes. The first I was on the other side of the Tardis. I saw them leave the scene on the far side, nipped across by barging politely through crowd during the short gap between takes and placed myself in the exact right spot which was inexplicably far less crowded. Taken with a really wide angle fixed lens, so no zooming for me! Rejigged my website, btw.

Bring a book to it, like I do, that's my advice. I felt good when I asked people around me if I was in anyone's way, and a cute girl thanked me and said there weren't many gentlemen around nowadays who'd think of asking. Take that papparazzi ethos! Zaphod, yeah, that's a split second before and from someone a little to the side of me. There was ComicBookGuy with a DSLR next to me, which amused me. I'm glad I got a nice expression and shot (even if Clara was a little out of depth-of-field, oooh, that eats me up, still, kinda cute) - I honestly couldn't have posted a fudged or far-away pic. Not ego, its just that... ... okay, it's ego.
