I didn't like the Christmas show and the 50th much either, but I'll happily keep watching and very keen to see the new Doctor :)

Red carpet stuff in Cardiff today for the premier

And an odd post about music which if Chinny still reads the forum I think would be something he'd enjoy

And down as just a 'look who i met' rather than a 'she might be in a future episode'

I re-watched last year's Christmas one the other week. It made a heck of a lot more sense and was far more enjoyable when not viewed through the Christmas Day booze-and-food fog. But I still prefer the 50th anniversary one.

It was 'okay' but I think i was expecting more after the 50th which I loved.

Only a few days to go till the start of the new season - the first 3 episodes have now leaked online (in b/w with missing FX) , and there are plenty of rumors of

Clara leaving at the end of this season

But that doesnt matter - all the stuff I've seen in interviews and small clips suggest Capaldi will be great

Doctor Who 'extra' announced

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/ar ... tra-series

Quote:
BBC iPlayer launches exclusive Doctor Who Extra series

The BBC has today announced Doctor Who Extra - a brand new series, exclusively on BBC iPlayer. Doctor Who Extra is much more than a ‘making of’ show as we follow Peter Capaldi every step of the way throughout the creation of his first season as the Doctor. Over the course of 12 programmes we trace the highs and lows of Doctor Who’s most ambitious run of episodes yet, getting the inside take on series 8 from the people who made it.

The Doctor Who Extra team had unparalleled access to stars including Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Samuel Anderson (series regular Danny Pink) plus guests Frank Skinner, Keeley Hawes, Michelle Gomez, Ben Miller, Foxes and many more. Writers, such as Lead Writer and Executive Producer Steven Moffat, and directors also contribute as they spill the beans on the on and off-screen drama.

Casual viewers will enjoy the fun, fast pace and lighter side of Doctor Who Extra but there’s plenty for fans, too, as we take a quick dip into the archive for every edition, reflecting on how Doctor Who’s history is echoed in this current series.

Packed with emotion, great stories and a real sense of ‘access all areas’, Doctor Who Extra is essential viewing for everyone who’s ever watched Doctor Who and wondered what it’s a like to be a part of the team that brings this global phenomena to our screens.

Doctor Who Extra is produced by BBC Cymru Wales and executive produced by Steven Moffat, Brian Minchin and Jo Pearce. Each 10 minute Doctor Who Extra episode will be available after that week’s Doctor Who episode on BBC One.

No opinions yet? Overall I'm not that impressed but y'know I'm wrong about everything.

The good:

Capaldi has potential
Creepy enemies
Creepy Premise
Madame Vastra

The bad:

Still too silly and manic (but hey maybe that's the post regeneration thing)
Too much post regeneration madness
Still felt horribly superficial.
Didn't really get much feel for the Doctor.
Still seems very aimed at kids rather than being FAMILY viewing.

First half was too chaotic and not so good, second half was excellent. I thought the interaction between Clara and The Doctor was great and having someone in the role who can really act made a huge difference to how natural the relationship felt.

I think a lot of it was a (not so subtle) dig at the people moaning about an old doctor.
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The character building about him being a different sort, a nastier doctor, and potentially one that has been seen before was quite good. Also, my who knowledge may be poor, but I am sure previous doctors have said the are 1000 yrs old, whereas he said he 2000 years old.

He was about 1000 years old, then spent about 1000 years on Trenzalore defending it, IIRC

I think he will be a good Doctor. I too thought that the second half of the episode was far better than the first half.

A couple of things jarred, however: the stupid cartoon sound effects - when he bonked his head and something else, and some incidental music that sounded like it was from Tom & Jerry. At that point it was like watching CBBC.

Watched it very late on Saturday night in a hotel room after a wedding with about 8 other people (a friend 'just happened' to have brought his laptop and a HDMI cable to plug into the TV), some of whom are not fans of the show. Really enjoyed it. Rewatched it last night, and it was as good as I remembered. It was refreshing that whilst Capaldi was top-notch, the supporting cast were just as good and had some brilliant scenes and speeches.

Not sure why there was so much anti soldier stuff in that, esp at the end to that woman. His we will find out, but it seemed a little meta political for my liking.

MrsSG and myself both underwhelmed by both the episodes, honestly think he has potential to be a good Doctor (no pun intended) but those episodes were very lacking imo.

Thought that one was pretty good.

Really like that the Dalek saw hatred in the doctor.

I have to say I'm not really sure about Capaldi actually. He seems to rather oddly lack charisma. I'm not looking for a Mat Smith or David Tennant but he just tends to look a little bewildered and lost sometimes. Also the doctor is being possibly a bit too 'dark' and a bit of a git.

I still thought it a vast improvement over the first episode though.

I'd agree if I'd only seen the first half of Deep Breath and then Into the Dalek, but he really nailed it in the second half of the first episode. Still think Deep Breath was better overall.

I've got to be honest, the second episode sent me to sleep. I'll have to try it again.

Capaldi... I'm not convinced. This whole self-doubt thing is already grating.

Maybe we have been spoilt with the last two Doctors. They were both incredible from the get-go. Or maybe Moffatt has run out of ideas.

Let's see how the rest of the season pans out.

I thought it was a terrible story, with a waste/overuse of the required Dalek episode. Also the 'Daleks shine spotlight on the dark side of the doctor' has itself been more than overused in the past ten years.

The only episode in a long time where I've not been fully concentrating on it as I got bored, although I'm laying that at the scriptwriters feet rather than Capaldi, for now.

Maybe it wasn't even the writing. I'm not sure how the concept of 'let's do Inner Space but inside a dalek' even got past the initial planning meeting.

It was covered in the 'extra' that it came from a question to Stephen Moffat about people searching for ideas to do a Doctor Who video game and he came out with that as a concept and then told them "No , you cant have that - its going to be an episode"

Episode one was a bit "meh", Episode two was pretty decent. I like CApaldi, and CLara did someothing.

Yes, I'm sure they'll bin the Doctor's most iconic nemeses in the programme. Seems plausible.

I really enjoeyd episode 2. The Doc was as cold and scary as 9 was in 'Dalek', and I'm glad it wasn't a rehash of it.

But, yes, I think letting the pepperpots rest for two or three years would be good. Last time they were truly scary was the 'Asylum of the Daleks' episode.

He used to be surprised when he saw one "they were all destroyed in the time war" etc. Now he's not even surprised anymore.

yeah, there wasn't even any build up about what the enemy was - just as well really as the BBC announcer tells you prior to the show starting what is going to happen, FFS.

They did try that a few times down to the final few but then they just open up the floodgates again and they arrive again.

Also 'all destroyed in the time way' does not quite mean that same as it did before as the end of the time war has been re-written (Galifrey moved to another dimension so the Daleks shot themselves rather than locked in the time 'bubble' that was created).

The thing is they are never going to get rid of them totally but they could do so much more with them than they have done recently.

that is the other thing I don't like about it, trotting them out over and over again makes them infinitely less scary because it makes them so beatable
they are built up as this amazing enemy, a time war was fought by Timelords for bloody ages and the only way to defeat them was to kill them all (ok I know Gallifrey falls no more, but that has been the Daleks bio up till then)
But every time they bring one or more out, they have to be defeated and every time that happens the Daleks lose more street cred and so: meh

I really liked 'Dalek' which carried the idea of one dalek being dangerous , however after that they decided its much better to have an enormous army of them to battle against

Classic stories often have the same issues but you did get the idea that often the victory was just escape from them , or that they had a plan and the victory was stopping that plan (rather than just use them as an enemy which will kill everything).

Some examples :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Daleks - Where the goal was to stop them changing time (I know that no-one really messes with time in 'New Who' other than the Doctor & The Master but the Daleks can time travel and is that not a better and more scarey idea that the Daleks have manipulated time to get their own way)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_to_the_Daleks - Daleks with no weapons until they swap their blasters for Uzi's :-) (goal to escape the planet / stop the energy drain)
