I never went a bundle on Last Ninja. Too fiddly. Over rated, like Rick Dangerous.

Give an agent a V1 chest and they can self destruct, levelling most buildings.

Sadly the effect of the self destruct wasn't quite as cool as in the original. 'course, that could just be because I liked the sound effect and it brings back pleasant memories. Also you can't do the 'surviving self-destruction' trick with medikits like you sometimes could in the first.

Utopia was nice, very pretty and had a good feel to it, but it never really grabbed me like K240 did. Can't say exactly why, mind.

Comparing Rick Dangerous to The Last Ninja is akin to inciting racial hatred. Or making a slight against CUS*.

How come they could put that massively powerful explosive in the agent's chest, but the actual timebombs you could buy were pitifully weak in comparison?

Not that it mattered, in the original all enemy agents carried one, leading to huge (and excellent) chain reactions.

Syndicate, and Syndicate Wars, had some really memorable sounds. I had the woman from Syndicate Wars saying "New Mail Is Awaiting Your Attention" as my new mail sound for ages.

SW was, as others have said, an unfair mess. Blowing up buildings was awesome though.

K240 was amazing.

I would love a WiiWare or Indie style PC remake release. No overblown budget meaning they over complicate things.

Just let me build up awesome little asteroids and then launch massive missle strikes on others.

I wish I could get WinUAE working for this :(

You were always outnumbered in the original Syndicate, but this wasn't a problem as your weapons were nice and effective. And if you hit big problems, you could always just hide around a corner and use the flamethrower (which clipped through the corner) to set your foes alight as they lurched around it.

Syndicate Wars' weedy weapons, however, didn't seem to kill the enemies nearly quickly enough, and this was while you desperately scrambled to seek refuge under a building from yet another flying fucking APC.

I am a HUUUUUGE Syndicate fan, but after getting Syndicate Wars I played only a portion of it before giving up in disgust.

I found a 'CD' of syndicate wars on 'top of the wardrobe' and am currently 'cleaning the dust off it' :ninja:

I played it to the penultimate set of levels with the sydicate, I really liked it. Never really got on with playing as the churchy guys though. I can see why some didn't like it, I guess the flaws didn't bug me as much. In fact, I fucking loved it and am willing to piss about with cunting dosBOX again, for at least 30 minutes, to try and get it working on my PC. I'll report back - probably with swears.

I bought the playstation version off a mate for a fiver many many years ago, it was a real stinker in comparison.

In a fit of ... awnting to play a good game... ness. Oh dear, this isn't a good start, is it?

Anyway, in some sort of fit, I had a crack at K240 again just now, my first for a year or two. I started with the crappy insectoid guys, thinking it probably wouldn't take more than an hour or two to wipe them out, or that it might be one of the roughly one in four times when their lack of gravity control meant they quietly destroyed themselves before I'd even found them.

Fuck me, I'd forgotten how unpredictable this game could be. Far from folding like a post office paperback, they're kicking my arse. I wasn't even sure if the hive guys had battleships at all, and they've gone and wiped out three of my asteroids with missiles, and I've just barely repulsed two battleships and a couple of bomber fleets with my swarm of skirmishers. I haven't even built my first missile yet, and they've gone so far as to take out my newly built orbital platform. All I've done is blown up a few of their outlying colones and evacuated my ore supplies back and forth as they rain nukes on my colonies. Jesus. If it hadn't been for the software failure, I don't think I'd have come out of that one alive. Man, there really needs to be a remake of this game.

I remember PC Gamer saying that it (Syndicate Wars) had the world's best intro sequence, while the original languished in 6th or 7th place.

Which is clearly wrong. Syndicate Wars' intro is cack apart from that split second when the kickass music plays as the agents are blasting everything, while Syndicate's is excellent throughout (and was astonishingly great when first released)

New Syndicate? KICK ASS.

By EA? Balls.

Oh well, they might not fuck it up. But I'm not hopeful.

All I want is a remake of the original game but with up to date graphics, the original Syndicate is essentially like UFO: Enemy Unknown in that it's basically perfect apart from the outdated graphics, yet no-one is giving us just a straight remake. Gnnnnnnnnngh.

Post subject:  Re: Classic game to make exciting return

I have literally just woken up for a dream involving all this - a successor to Skool Daze. I apologise for this being a bit unstructured but I'm trying to write it all down before I forget any.

My character was a fat, dull clod called 'Worf' (he looked a bit like extra-fat Cartman from the World of Warcraft episode). The game begins with Worf driving to his new high school.

Upon parking his car (limited driving bits) he uses an overhead map of the school to find his first class. There are three 'periods' per day plus a lunch period, and three semesters per year, so there's nine different classes you attend, basically.

Upon arrival at the classroom, you have to pick up the course outline, find a desk, and complete simplistic exercises based on the subject. As a new student to the school, the math teacher asked my level of competence (in turn determining the difficulty of the questions). You then sit at the desk, do a few of the exercises, the period ends, and you go to the next class.

While sitting there you can, of course, interact with other students (doing it when you're meant to be working, and you risk the teacher hearing and following the noise to accuse you or whoever they think did it) or indeed get up and move around (again, the teacher might not approve)

In the second period, the highly-strung English teacher and Worf had some friction and started arguing. This ended with the teacher (who is a bit nuts) grabbing Worf by the collar. Fortunately, at this point the principal (who was very much like the principal from South Park) had heard the commotion and Worf, hitting the 'call for help' button, got her attention and she witnessed it. She hauled the teacher off to the office and gave over her keys, inviting Worf to go and use one of the 'minicopters' to get over his trauma.

This was an, er, key development. The minicopters (little helicopters used in a minigame) aside, there's a secret room that you need both the principal and the receptionist's key to get into. Much like in Skool Daze, the contents of the room could be used to alter your grades if need be. Worf went outside, noting said door on his way, before noticing on the minimap that the principal and teacher were now returning to the room. Handing the keys back, he took his place and sat through the class.

There was a lunch sequence I don't really remember, and then a cookery class in which another slightly stressed teacher overheard talking and follow the noise to near where Worf was sitting, and punished everyone in the vicinity.

And so it went. The next day opened again with Worf arriving at the school and parking his car.

The school itself was two floors, about six classrooms per floor so it wasn't so large that you could get easily lost. Outside was a big playing field with gym and pool (for the sports minigames), a parking lot, and a fence around the outside marking the edge of the school grounds. This environment wouldn't be too hard to program, I reckon... a GTA/Oblivion style engine in which you could move around, sit down, and talk to other characters.

There were Sims-style needs and friendship bars. You could select other students to interact with them in varying ways, as well as put your hand up to ask to go to the bathroom lest your bladder bar empty and you piss your pants in front of everyone. Of course, some crotchety teachers would refuse, so you either wet yourself or just get up and go anyway (getting into trouble in the process).

There were five other characters to play as, as well. Violence was limited to minor pushing and shoving.

That's all I can remember for now, but I can still see it perfectly in my mind's eye.
