Certainly there are boys' clubs and the like, but equally certainly there is no conspiracy capable of running things in anything like a coherent fashion. Take any conspiracy theory and it can seem likely, but much more likely is that no one would have been able to put together, carry out and then get all the participants to keep secret any kind of elaborate plan.

And finance? Don't get me started. I'm a saver, I was mildly stitched up before - ooh look everyone, cheap credit, let's all buy houses, look how the rates fall. And I'm mildly stitched up now - ooh, The Bank's job is to keep down inflation by raising interest rates if necessary. Inflation is rising - but we'd best keep lowering those rates, so that people can still afford their houses (it isn't just this, of course). I now need 8% interest just for my savings to not lose value after inflation and tax. Oh, and while we're at it, let's call those who invested in decent-rate savings account "rate tarts" as if they're doing something wrong, and those with mortgages - ah, well, that's your ordinary working person there, not like these rich savers, they need help.

Conspiracy? Nah - democracy perhaps, and actually tending to the needs of the many.

Shall we start our own shadowy conspiracy? With our mix of web developers, lawyers, librarians and talented crafty sewing types, I'm sure we could rule the world, or at the very least a small, rubbish bit of it.
