Yes to Mali's motion that is, not myoptika's spazzy wrongness there.

You can't parody a parody. Or to paraphrase someone else, "it's been done so much that even a 10 minute open spot wouldn't do material about X Factor any more".

It made me laugh, quite a lot in fact. And was, to my mind, pretty much bob on the money with the format and presentation.

So, a success, to me, at least. The rest of you are dead inside.

I watched it until James may, then watched the Stephen Fry I'd recorded after that.

Some of it made me laugh, but it was too much like the real thing for it to be really funny. I expect if you like all those talent shows (I don't), you'd find it funnier.

Given those type of talent shows are often on of a Saturday morning at Mali Towers, this is why I found it funny.

I Sky-Plussed this (out watching Steve Coogan's inevitably-disappointing new live show) but dunno if I can be arsed to watch it. Hated Max & Paddy with a passion. Dave Spikey and Neil Fitzmaurice were clearly the more talented writers.

Hated Max and Paddy, also Phoenix Nights, so I didn't bother watching this. His stand up show was fantastic, but he doesn't seem to have any material other than 'remember family holidays?' etc.

It was shit, I turned it off.

Phoenix Nights was fantastic, but contrary to popular belief (due to the fact it had Peter Kays name all over it) it was co-written by 2 other writers (Dave Spikey and the guy who plays the gypsy with the mullet).

There was a late night sitcom written by Dave Spikey a few years back and you could see straight away what bits he contributed to Phoenix Nights.

I'm not saying Peter Kay isn't clever, but Ronnie Barker he ain't and Barker knew the value of being part of a team while being very very modest about his own writing ability (which is why it took him years to reveal who Gerald Whiley was).

You could also tell who wrote the best bits of PN when you saw the atrocity that is Max and Paddy. I think I've laughed more at funerals.

Yeah he does seem to struggle for new material a bit. I saw his standup show live though and he's as funny as anyone I've seen when he does the talk to the audience bit at the end. He is a funny guy and I sometimes get the feeling that lot of people seem to resent the fact that poor people, you know the ones who read the wrong newspapers, find him funny too.

Dead Man Weds. It was lovely, and really should've been treated better by ITV. He also wrote a one-off comedy drama called Magnolia which start Ralph 'Finchy' Ineson which, while not brilliant, certainly deserved a full series, and was much better than Craig Cash's Sunshine.

Hmm, I dunno. I love Peter Kay's stand up and I am a bit of a comedy snob. Mainstream doesn't have to equal shit. It's just that Max and Paddy clearly was shit, and he really does seem to need a co-writer to be any good at all.

He's also a bit of a cunt, allegedly - I'm sure Plissken must have some stories about him that he probably won't want to repeat, being from the Manc comedy scene and all.

Look, I was asked to go and fucking be in on it, because he got a lot of open spot level acts from Manchester to be part of it. I said no, some said yes.

Second, I am not wrong in saying that taking the piss out of the X Factor type shows was an idea that is at least three years out of date. X Factor itself has become a self-aware parody. So he isn't doing a) anything new and b) anything that the existing show hasn't already done, only more so. Shows of its ilk have going for a decade now - much as I like the idea of the forthcoming Charlie Brooker thing, "Shit happens outside Big Brother House while contestants aren't aware" is an old, old idea.

FWIW, I am not a fan of Peter Kay to say the least. However, I will say that Phoenix Nights is a work of genius, and while Spikey and Fitzmaurice have been overlooked for their crucial writing work, the brilliant creation that is the monstrous Brian Potter is Kay's own work.

I think therein lies the problem (for me, anyway). If it'd been some kind of wind-up where the judges or audience weren't aware it was a parody, it might have been interesting and/or funny in a "Brasseye/Cake" kind of way.

I thought it was a rather warm send up of it, rather than a scathing attack.

For the record I love Peter Kay, both live and his previous TV shows, but I thought Pop Factor was a series of great jokes that were stretched out far too long to fit the format of the original.

I think there's room for warm send ups and scathing attacks in comedy, but there seems to be far too little of the latter these days. (Harry & Paul's Kingdom parody was a good example, to be fair.)

Author:  Dr Lave [ Mon Oct 13, 2008 10:58 ]
Post subject:  Re: Britain's Got Pop Star Talent Dancing With Jesus On Ice

I went to see Peter Kay back before he became all mainstream, and he was excellent. But just because he's super mainstream doesn't stop his stand up being excellent.

But it's the same 90mins of stand up. Based on one paper thin concept (Hey we all have shared memories of the past HA HA HA). For at least 8 years now. That Peter Kay Thing was good. Phoenix Nights was good (for the first series).

But somethings are good and stay with you. Some things are good at the time, and then you let them go. PK is a perfect example of that. It's a very stale joke now.

I'll watch this if I get a chance, but I'm not going out of my way. I never bothered with Max and Paddy.

I thought the first half was mostly good. The young lad that played R Wayne performed with such a sincerity through the farce that I thought it quite well done. '2 up 2 down' were the weak point, taking a step too far in the unbelievable, I think. The 'results' show was a bit of a let down.

I wonder what happened if people called that phone number - the cost of the call kept changing on-screen and I am certain that at least a few people will have called.

It was an absolutely joyful show, with a lot of spot on little touches that made a world of difference.

If you didn't watch the results show, then you missed Cat Deeley asking for quiet when she was about to read the result, and then screaming at everyone to "just fucking shut up".

Also, exchanges galore such as after the on-wires performance of a contestant flying out of her wheelchair:

Cat: "Oh, you really flew!"
Woman: "It's wires, Cat."

Last New Year, I was in the US, watching the countdown on TV. Anyway, there was Dick Clark (I think, some old American guy) presenting it all, from Time Square, this massive event, that most of America was watching.

Co-presented by Cat Deeley. Eh?

I think Neil Fitzmaurice also co-wrote Saxondale, which I enjoyed.

Truly, my Mum's best friend's son-in-law is/was best mates with 'Paddy', who has a 'funniest footballing foul-ups' DVD out, I saw in HMV the other day. I might be able to arrange for him and Kay to be somewhere at a given time, if we have any assassins newly joined on the board?
