You've mentioned that twice now, but she's never mentioned it to me. Where did you get this from?

I thought that was why! I am positive that you mentioned something about her complaining about the music as she'd heard it nigh-on constantly for the week or two that you were obsessed with it.

Also, for goodness sake, come into CoD4 at some point so you can see this throwing shapes thing already.

Week? More like 3-4 months, I think my in-game clock is up around 175 hours. I may have made a joke about it.

I've been on the 360 loads over the weekend and yesterday and everyone is off playing Fable and Far Cry and Fuck You Gaywood.

Tell me about it. All weekend I was up for playing... well, anything, really... but everyone was play Dead Space of Fable 2.

Except MrChris, who had his headset unplugged and kept dropping offline meaning we never actually managed to play anything at all.

So, in the end, I was stuck grinding through Arse Effect, and running into the BRICK FUCKING WALL in Eternal Sonata that is Dolce the Pirate Captain (the first time you encounter her, your characters are the same level they were several hours in the game earlier, and to level them you have to fight the pirates who are among the most dangerous enemies in the game. And grindy grindy grindy you shall, as otherwise as soon as the battle starts Dolce runs around behind you and kills you without you having a chance to block, while her twatty sidekicks do their easily-blocked-but-still-does-a-fuckload-of-damage-even-when-blocked attacks to finish you off)

Well, IGN US did anyway. IGN UK gave it the shitty low score of 8.8. According to some of the comments, it's retaliation for IGN US only giving Fable 2 a score of 8.8 -- IGN US slated a British dev's game so IGN UK have slated an American dev's game. The bastards; it's clearly an 8.9, possibly even a 9.0.

Those comments are just... wow. Rock, Paper Shotgun's Alec Meer caring so deeply about his freelance IGN UK connections to take one for the team? What a guy :metul:

Seriously, W the F? I've seen my share of tinfoil hattery in review comment sections before, but this is starting to get waay beyond parody.

Though I am avoiding reviews, I ended up reading Tim's first impressions of it over at Ctrl Alt Del today and am 50% unsurprised and 50% disappointed.

There's no mistaking that it's Oblivion with a Fallout skin, it seems. And unfortunately, the po-faced dialogue of Oblivion has been carried over as well, with not much in the way of witty banter.

Tim's not sure, but he has a horrible feeling that the level scaling hasn't been as reduced as they said it would be. It's early days yet, but still... the fear.

Finally, and this is something I sort of saw coming, the VATS combat system is a great idea. Because the 'action points' bar recharges really quickly, but all you need to do is just charge at an enemy dodging their attacks, and then go into VATS when you're two feet away and use the inevitable 95% accuracy to shoot their face off at point blank range.

That seems odd, considering that the two things most raved about in the IGN review were the stunning scenery and the incredible quality and depth of the voice acting and dialogue.

Hey, I'm still extremely excited about it, this is just confirming a few things that I'd always suspected/feared.

Getting really close to your enemy and then using a targetted shot was always a good tactic in the original games. Before you had enough skill to hit people in the eyes from 50 feet away with the turbo plasma rifle, walking up to them to do it worked just as well.

Craster: Tim's statement, not mine. He says the scenery is stunning (so was Oblivion's, or so I reckon at least) and it's great to have more than three voice actors.

The levelling thing is my biggest worry. I want someone to categorically tell me it isn't like that.

The reviews seem to state that it's nowhere near as bad as Oblivion, but that it still happens to some extent.

Oblivion was beautiful from a distance, but texture hell up close.

I should have a quiet afternoon so will look at the EG and IGN reviews and scour the rest of the intenets for confirmation that it's all okay, make myself feel better.

The levelling system has been repaired and one of very few criticisms leveled at the game is that if you're some masochistic nerd who likes rock hard games then this isn't one because by the time you reach level 20 you can pretty much kill everything the game has to offer in one headshot. I suspect it may take 60 hours to get to level 20 though and there are areas in the game that you will get your gluteus maximus handed to you on a flat dining receptacle if you venture into while on level 1 or something.

Anyhoo, it looks so impressive I've ordered it now. The question is, will I play it?

The point is quite rightly made that we want our hero to get strong and to FEEL like we're getting stronger, coming back to effortlessly annihilate foes that previously were a desperate struggle.

Hell, it happened in the old Fallout games... where before you stabbed or fired your peashooter pistol desperately at radscorpions or mole rats, later in the game when you encounter some you barely break your stride as you blast them with your combat shotgun.

I'd be surprised, actually. I read that many of the items don't look the same (this was on EG) and remember that a lot of the guns in Fallout 2 were to appease all of us gun nuts on the Interplay Fallout board.

Any idea if you can use melee? The idea of a nippy little sniper/blade combo assassin-type really appeals.

According to CtrlAltDel Tim you have to go into the Pipboy inventory screen to change weapons, just like you did in Oblivion.

So, shoot shoot shoot, B, switch to Super Sledge.

"You cannot change weapons while attacking"

Back to game, wait 0.3 seconds for attack animation to finish. B again, finally switch to Super Sledge. Whack.

From the reviews, I'm more than a little nervous about them increasing focus on the radiation thing. I liked the fact that the previous games didn't have you constantly on the hunt for Rad-Away, as that would really annoy me.

According to Destructoid's preview of the new XBox dash, Fallout 3 takes 5.3Gb to install onto the hard disk and loads noticeably faster afterwards. I can squeeze that onto my 20Gb disk, so that's going to be useful once NXE ships.

Oh my - so I can play it without the stupid DVD drive noise? Joy!

This week gets better and better.

When's the new dash due out?
