I'm finding the "survival guide" thing a bit tedious and the rewards poor, but, there doesn't seem to be much else on offer for the moment and at least you can pick up sellable trinkets whilst on the missions.

Did the "wander around the underground facility and get repeatedly sliced up by mirelurks" thing last night. It's a bit scary.

I really need to find / buy a better gun though. Can't find ammo for my sniper rifle, the 10mm costs a fortune and keeps running out mid-battle.

Up your barter skill to get better prices.

Sniper ammo is (comparatively) few and far between for most of the game, sadly.

If you're bored of her survival guide (and it does get a bit dull, but the first couple of chapters are a good way to get some XP and bits and bobs), you can find other missions to do by just wandering off in a random direction! Find some other locations, talk to people, get missions. Simples. :)

The other mission you get very early on is the one the girl in the bar will give you to deliver a letter to her parents. That's a pretty big one that gives you access to another shopkeeper, too.

Oooh, yes, Family Ties or whatever it is.

The journeys on that one should also open up some other locations with mission threads and shopkeepers.

Thanks for the tips. I just picked up the letter from that girl. The location is bloody *miles* away! I got about 1/4 the way there before getting killed, so I need to scrounge around and get some better armour and stuff before trying it.

It isn't miles! My trip all the way to the northwestern corner of the map to get the dart gun schematics is a long trip! It is a worthwhile trip to make. Apart from guaranteed adventure, you get free dart gun schematics (which will require completing a long quest of paying a certain merchant 1000 caps otherwise).

Travelling on foot isn't too dangerous. Keep your eye on your compass for any red blips. Sweep your view around every once in a while while clicking the VATS key which will often detect foes before you spot em. Listen for the 'boom' sound which I've heard indicates the spawning of a random foe. And if you're concerned, sneak for a bit. 'Hidden' is fine, but 'caution' means a hostile suspects you're there and is coming to investigate where it thinks it saw you. 'Detected' is just a non-hostile knowing you're there. Following these tips I made the above journey in just mercenary clothes, with a Chinese AR and a combat shotgun. Just remember that if you evade a foe, they'll often still be there when you return.

It's worth doing the survival guide. Some is tedious, but some is exciting, some is easy (radiation) and some is very handy (do the molerat one completely, including the optional extra, and you get to keep the extremely useful molerat killing stick).

Every time you get to put points into your skills, upgrade your small guns and repair. I did that, then everytime i got attacked I jut sprinted toward the baddy and shot them in the face. Using that method I was able to one or two shot kill supermutants :) shotgun was my weapon of choice :)

Yeah. Gun Nut is good for increasing those skills too. I found the scoped .44 to be especially useful against Supermutants. And always go for the head.

That exciting huh?

I'm so excited that :

I phoned all of my friends last night, even the ones that have never played or heard of FO3 and told them a new one was coming at the end of the year.
Promised mum I would put the soundtrack on CD for her like I did with FO3.
Downloaded the Blue Moon song that plays in the trailer (Frank Sinatra) and then set it to repeat and listened to it for about an hour.
Downloaded a program that would allow me to download the embedded video and watched it about twenty times, pausing it to try and work a few things out.
Posted a status on Facebook saying that I had an erection and was gutted because I could be dead by October. Got a reply from my friend Phinecia who said she too had an erection (bless her) and then we agreed that we hoped they wouldn't get carried away with an Area 51 aspect as we both hated Zeta.
I sat and daydreamed about the limited edition version and what might come in it.

So you could say I am just a little bit excited.

I just semenised my underwear about ten times. The Geckos look fucking braw and the female mutants? I have tears streaming down my face. The sense of humour is definitely there already.

I shall have wonderful dreams about plundering Vault 21 tonight. *sigh*

It certainly seems to be to Fallout 3 what Fallout 2 was to the original Fallout.

Geckos, bigger setting, vehicles, incongruous weapons (he's holding an M4 in a number of the screenshots, which doesn't jive with Fallout's timeline diverging just after WW2. On the other hand, though, Fallout 2 had loads of real-world weapons added at the request of all us gun nuts on the Interplay forums). The Geckos were bastards in Fallout 2, and I LOVE the Vegas cityscape.

A bit worried by the guy writing the captions for PC Gamer who thinks sasparilla was alcoholic.

Hardcore mode excites me.

I was reading that, and I thought "that hardcore mode seems to have been designed with masochistic ironmen players like Perkies in mind", funnily enough.

Heh. Having to worry about feeding yourself is a nice addition. It doesn't seem to be an 'ironman' mode, though. Fallout 3 is awfully hard to die in anyway.

Eugh, no it fucking isn't. Any more things they want to add to stop me actually enjoying myself? What about starting the game with amoebic dysentery, so I have to stop whatever I'm doing and duck off for a runny shit every half hour?

:DD

First, it's optional, so if you're a mentalist like me you'll switch it on.

Secondly, it gives all that food you kept finding a purpose. Yes, early on, when you're poor and low level you needed the food to regain health. But eventually it didn't matter, as you'd shrug off most damage and any time you did get hurt you could just pause and inject yourself with a dozen stimpacks from the fucking pharmacy you're carrying in your backpack and be instantly at full health again.

Half-secondly, it also stops stimpacks working instantly.
