Watching Stranger Things. It's good!

Problem is, the headphones they're using are the same ones I have. Immersion: Destroyed

Has the possible new series of Star Trek discovery been discussed?

Sounds like it is set after Enterprise but before ToS

It's not a possible show, it's definitely happening. And yes, it looks like it's set before TOS, based on Bryan Fuller saying at ComicCon that "There’s a big clue in the number of the ship [NCC-1031] that indicates when we’re set." The Enterprise is NCC-1701 so if the Federation numbers ships even vaguely chronologically then that means the new show (which is called Discovery, BTW) must be set before TOS.

(Which also means the earlier reports that it was from the show continuity and not the forked timelines in the current movies isn't technically correct -- if it takes place before the timeline fork, it exists in both continuities equally.)

Edit -- and Netflix UK will be airing it, incidentally.

Everyone who loved the soundtrack and vibe of Stranger Things should really watch It Follows. Yes, it's a 2 year old movie, and i suspect most people here already seen it.

On serial numbers of military equipment:

I think that in WW2, the Britsh started their tank serial numbers at something like 65,456 so if it were captured it would appear that there were at least 65,455 others.

Which leads my thoughts to recall to a way of calculating population through sampling (the most recent application i can recall was counting street prostitutes in Sheffield) by capturing 100, releasing them, then popping back the next week and picking up another 100 and seeing who you caught twice and mathing it up to estimate the total. Which was sort of done with something else in WW2.

Are you sure they weren't looking really far into the future and trying to cause an overflow exception for anyone trying to catalogue their tanks using an unsigned short as a data type?

Although, naturally, an overflow isn't a problem for uniqueness until you go back to your original value. It's far from unusual in discard the overflowed bits and just ignore it ever happened.

Piled through eight episodes of Bojack in the last three nights, absolutely love it.

Jnr caught sight of it when she came back down for something and I then had to explain that even though it was a cartoon it was not suitable for children.

'Does it have violence in it?'
'Does it have sex in it?'
'What are the adult themes?'

And so on.....

Almost at the end of S1 of Flaked. Was worried it was going to be Bojack Just A Man Not A Horseman, and while there are similarities in the characters it's a good show in its own right, and the end of E6 throws a huge curveball in that I didn't expect at all.

I hope it gets renewed for S2!

Season One of BoJack Horseman finished last night, I honestly didn't think there was a massive qualitative difference between the first and second half of the season, although the second half went more into the characters and got a bit 'deeper' I suppose. Either way it was all great, and very funny.

Will make a start on Season Two this evening.

BoJack's bad trip section in one of the final episodes of the season was fantastic (the one where they all consume huge amounts of drugs to try and rewrite the book in less than a week), although not as all-time great as that sequence in The Simpsons where Homer eats the Guatemalan Insanity Pepper and totally trips his balls off.

I miss The Simpsons from when it wasn't shit. Also, why is there no official way to stream The Simpsons, I'd love to go back and watch all the older seasons. When did it go shit? Early 2000s IIRC.

I watched episode 10 of the Preacher last night which looks like it was the end of the first season. It was brilliant! Can't wait for the 2nd season.

On episode six or seven of Preacher. Best show this year. And last year.

The casting has proven to be pitch-perfect after my in initial doubts. Preach' feels a more sinister and fallible character in this. Cassidy is as chaotic and charming as I'd hoped. Tulip is rather wonderful. Arse Face makes me sad.

The fight in the motel room is demented and brilliant. In fact, it's all brilliant, and made moreso by the fact I can't really remember anything that happens in the comics, so it all feels interestingly new (to the extent my wife doesn't believe I actually read them because I'm incapable of answering any questions about it.)

Ten thumbs up!

Preacher is, to my mind, too fallible. He's kinda just a knob. The others are all great.

You're wrong, Cras.

Anyway- episode 10. WTF? Unlike the comics, where there was an overall driver for the main characters' behavior, I'm not sure what the actual point of the show is or where it's going, to be honest. Maybe all will become clear in the final 10 minutes.

I'm wrong, because it'll be set ten years before Kirk's era. Also: the show's main character will be a "lieutenant commander with caveats" because "we've seen six series from captain's point of view and to see one from another point of view gives us a richer context". That seems like a decent idea.

Unless they have to come up with convoluted reasons why the LC is in charge every week.

I suppose it could be like TNG, when Riker lead most of the away teams.

But that didn't make Riker the main character. So you'd have to shift the focus to being almost entirely away-team based for that to work.

If it is called discovery, it could be more exploration lead. That could work.

I reckon it just means that the main overarching plot revolves around that character but mostly it'll be business as usual.

Finished iZombie season 2 last night; the finale was a belter. This show has gone from strength to strength. Also a new candidate for my favourite punny name: a military contractor company called Philmore Graves. (Still undisputed champion: District Attorney Baracas.)

It's on Netflix. You should be watching it.

They really are. And useful too! Wish all shows had these, way better than when they just show you a jumble of clips from five episodes ago that you've forgotten how to make any sense of.

In some early eps in season 1 they copied a lot of the other CW shows with a "my name is [Liv Moore|Barry Allen|Oliver Queen| and i am [a Zombie|the fastest man alive|going to save my city]" and thats when i spotted it

Finished Season 2 of BOJACK HORSEMAN last night, what a great series, and like, proper genuine drama going on with really interesting characters, as well as many laughs.

It's the sort of thing I'm happy to pay a Netflix sub for all by itself, as long as there's one decent series on the go to watch, that'll do for me.

I think series 2 is the highpoint so far for Bojack. Spent a lot of time building things up in series 1, and whilst I loved series 3 I don't think it hit quite the same highs, but yeah it's a magnificent thing that satisfies on several levels.

It's just as adept at delivering a silly little gag that gets you laughing as it is a genuinely heartfelt moment of character development.

It's top tier.

It feels like it's set up for the main arc of the comic now. A road trip to find God and kick his ass.

I thought it was brilliant. Still not 100% on Dominic cooper, but he'll do.

Someone made a spotify playlist of the soundtrack, which is good because the sound track is great.

You're wrong, Cras.

Anyway- episode 10. WTF? Unlike the comics, where there was an overall driver for the main characters' behavior, I'm not sure what the actual point of the show is or where it's going, to be honest. Maybe all will become clear in the final 10 minutes.

It feels like it's set up for the main arc of the comic now. A road trip to find God and kick his ass.

I thought it was brilliant. Still not 100% on Dominic cooper, but he'll do.

Someone made a spotify playlist of the soundtrack, which is good because the sound track is great.

He's talking about Preacher, folks.

Goodness me how amazingly good is the 'Fish Out Of Water' episode of Bojack Horseman in Season 3?

Absolutely superb, incredibly bold to do almost an entire episode of such a 'talky' show with almost no dialogue in it whatsoever, such fantastically luscious visuals and music, and the story is so beautifully told.

This is a consistently excellent programme anyway, but that episode really was something rather special.

Yes. It's marvellous, a real landmark episode. And the cut at the end is perfectly timed.

We just finished S3. Tremendous show.

Yep, a traditional network would never dare to air an episode like that. I really hope we get more daring TV like that from on-demand providers.
