Actually the drop is quality you got after series 3 is probably because the writers decided to change it from a "man's show" to a "woman's show", thus it took a rather jarring new direction with storylines, etc.

You can certainly only watch the first series and be done with it, it makes a self-contained little story.

Series 2 isn't bad, but has one really stupid plotline
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The murder
and just stops toward the end of the storylines due to the writers strike.

And you should probably stop there.

[edit]Oh wait, I was wrong. it's S04 where it changes direction. S03 isn't bad at all, so watch that one and then read the rest. It ends in pretty much exactly the way you'd expect. And you don't have to deal with a new character called (I shit you not) Epyck.

Yeah, that series 2 bit was just crap and completely out of sync with the rest of the show.

The thing about Utopia is that unlike pretty much any other TV show, I think I would be able to identify it from any single still screen of it's entire broadcast run. Maybe Mr Robot or Breaking Bad would achieve this too.

Also it has moments of incredibly beautifully done violence and understated gore, a story-line full of escalating conspiracies on top of conspiracies, and an undercurrent of nihilism that somehow manages to shock my desensitized mind. I can't quite believe it exists.

It's sci fi/drama/action, has a stellar cast and a really strong identity.

It's not US TV though, so sorry (although HBO/David Fincher were going to do a US remake but then it got canned).

Quote:
Lee Majors and Ted Raimi join Ash Vs. Evil Dead

If you're going to find someone to play the father of Bruce Campbell's Ash, you'd better start with the chin. Sam Raimi and the Ash Vs. Evil Dead team have found a strong one, hiring Lee Majors – the Six Million Dollar Man himself! – to play Brock Williams.

And that's not all the casting that was announced, coincidentally, on Ash Wednesday... Raimi's brother Ted is also joining the team. Which makes good on a promise that Sam offered back at Comic-Con last year that should the show score a second season, he'd find somewhere to squeeze Ted in. It's only fair, since the youngest of the Raimi brothers appeared in all three of the original Evil Dead films and pretty much everything Sam has made. In the series, he'll play Ash's childhod best pal, Chet Kaminski.

As for Majors, he seems like perfect casting: the right blend of grump and charm to have spawned Campbell's cult icon. The new arrivals join fellow supporting cast members Lucy Lawless, Ray Santiago and Dana DeLorenzo. The second season will be on the air later this year on Starz across the pond and Virgin Media here.

Yeah, I agree. I mean I do generally enjoy the show and all but this episode seemed to be much funnier then usual somehow.

I think the idea of using Castle as a foil to explore Murdock's darker side is a brilliant one. Two sides of the same coin -- both vigilantes, but one with limits and one without. Who's right and who's wrong? Very fertile ground, there.

I wonder to what extent we're getting Daredevil vs Punisher or if there'll be a larger villain they'll eventually team up against. Going flat out and casting Castle as the actual season-long bad guy would be interesting, and bold; but the Netflix/Marvel shows are pretty bold so I wouldn't rule it out.

It will be interesting how Castle's Story intersects with the other character's introduced at the end of the trailer (if it does...which I assume it will).

Episode 5 of the new X-Files was more good stuff. Not amazing or brilliant, but a decent chunk of telly, as the rest of the series has been thusfar. (With the exception of Episode 3 which was fantastic.)

Only one episode in this series to go, hope it gets commissioned for a proper full series after this. (I'd cheerfully tip a bit of cash their way, but apart from pretending to watch it on Channel 5 (which I have no means of actually receiving), what can I do?)

Yeah, there's been lots of chat about it when it came out, I think.

I liked it. It's no Scorpion, but it's pretty good.

New X-Files series review:

Episode 1: garbage
Episode 2: garbage
Episode 3: amazing
Episode 4: trashman good; Scully's mum garbage
Episode 5: great explosion, hilarious dancing on shrooms but otherwise garbage

OVERALL: Sadly very very terrible, but with shards of potential.

Y'know what I think, this new series is far too bogged down with the history of 9 series' of convoluted nonsense bulllshit. I'd have been much happier had the first episode got Mulder & Scully back on the X-Files and then they somehow just forgot all about everything that preceded it and started afresh. It could've been great just doing regular one-off investigations with the backdrop of having Mulder & Scully doing the "are they/aren't they" but ultimately just letting them have some sexy funtime with one another. I think they've still got some nice chemistry together on screen when they're not spouting a load of drivel about God (seriously, who wrote that episode is a fucking disgrace. It's like X-Files meets Dawson's Creek) (and not the great seasons of Dawson's Creek either - seasons 1-3. Natch - but the terrible 4th and 5th seasons). It was kinda nice to see them holding hands. I think exploring a nice mature relationship between the two of them could really work on screen. Sadly the legacy of some of TV history's worse story arcs got the better of them. If someone takes an objective look at these five episodes (what they got right; what they got so very very wrong) and probably ignore listening to every single fan boys, they could pull a new series out of the gutter and make something worthwhile watching.

And Terry Crees!? I like the guy and all but he is the least funny of the lot of them. His catch phrases are terrible "Terry loves X"? Wow. Good for 1 season but for seasons 3? No way, man. He's so needy and wants to do good, progress in his job and be loved by everyone, which is about as bad as a setup for comedy as it goes.

The real hero of The 99 is, of course, Charles Boyle.

And Captain Holt*.

*who made me laugh so much the other day when I was watching the episode where Holt and Jake get mumps and Holt is writing "case" on the window. He just turns to camera and says "case" and I was in fucking stitches.
