Although seeing Eddie Izzard as a villain did remind me to recommend the utterly fantastic Bullet In The Face. It's a violent, sexy, and incredibly snappy dark comedy about a violent criminal forced to wear the face and play the role of a police office, Face/Off style. There's only six episode in total, and they're all fantastic. It's full of incredible one liners, the cast is all top notch, and even in the short running time it builds a fantastic world. One of the best TV shows I never hear anyone else talk about.

I like the Powers comics but haven't heard anything good about the tv adaption so avoided it.

I downloaded all of Bullet in the Face on your recommendation Lewie but I haven't got round too watching it yet. The fact that it's relatively short does give it a better chance of being watched then most other things in my pile of shame though.

We're three episodes into the Netlfix series, Bloodline. It seems pretty great so far. I have to say that Netflix are fair killing it with their own content.

I finished Season 4 of Dexter last night which was great (SCARY JOHN LITHGOW USING THE 'C WORD' A LOT SHOCKER) but I'm not entirely sure I'm going to dive straight into Season 5.

For starters there's the sheer time commitment of watching all these seasons, when I also have GTAV and Hearthstone vying for my time (very much a nice first world problem, that is), plus I like to watch films as well and that doesn't happen when I'm binging on telly seasons.

I'm also wondering just how far they can stretch the story of SERIAL KILLER TRYING TO LIVE A NORMAL LIFE, I'm not entirely sure how far they can push it now without it starting to get a bit silly. On top of that, Dexter did a couple of spectacularly stupid things in the final couple of episodes of Season 4 which were clearly just silly contrivances to make the story twist a bit more, and that irritated me.

All that said I will watch Season 5 at some point, but I'm not going to dive straight back into it tonight, and will indeed take a break to get some quality time in on GTAV and maybe catch up on some films I want to watch. (I've been watching an episode or two (or three!) of Dexter every night for the last five weeks, so it's not done bad.)

Season 5 was where I dropped out - Season 4 was amazing and John Lithgow stole the show - however the next season started off poorly and it was one that i watched maybe 3 or 4 episodes of and then never went back to.

I quite enjoyed season 5 and thought Jonny Lee Miller, Julia Stiles and Peter Weller were all very good in it.

I would watch it all just to get the closure, but yes, it gets silly.

We're watching The Wire at the moment, and are two episodes of the full finale, and the last season is frankly beyond belief.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

The last season of The Wire got hit badly by the writer's strike of the time and is by far the weakest by consequence I think. That's why it's only ten episodes rather than thirteen and I suspect it would've all come together a lot better if they'd actually been able to use those 'missing' three episodes. It's a shame because David Simon's background was in news reporting so there was potential there for it to be a particularly good focus.

I was thinking more McNulty's storyline, but yeah, shame about the strike.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose US TV thread

The McNulty thing sort of works in that it's well established he's a bit of a tit who acts impulsively and doesn't think things through but yeah, it's a bit hard to swallow the idea that even he can't see how massively and inevitably the wheels will come off such a bonkers plan.

I'm currently forcing my way through American Horror Story: Asylum, I'm at episode 6. Does it get any better at any point, it seems a mish mash of half a dozen ideas forced together with some extremely poor writing.

...are Coven / Freakshow any better?

The last two (or three, I forget) tie everything together in a satisfactory way. Like you say though, there's too many different ideas smashed together. It could have been excellent had they bothered to trim the fat substantially and refine the couple of decent ideas that worked.

Morte wrote:

No and no. Worse and substantially worser.

I stopped watching Freakshow about five or six episodes in.

As an aside I've been offered over 10 series of Cops by a colleague at work, I'm not sure the human mind can endure watching 10 series of Cops.

Vikings is quite nice. Don't know why it took me so long to give it a go. Maybe because the title is so generic and short.

And the main Viking lady is lovely.

Haha you tease!

It's a shame because I usually hate US drama. I love Pawn Stars, the one about Rick the restoration guy and Counting Cars, but usually yeah, their dramas are sodding naff.

My lady watches The Collector which is Canadian but she likes it. Just seems pretty lame to me.

Hmmm. I really liked Arrow -- we watched the first half-dozen or so of the first season -- and I've heard nothing but good things about Flash. But if I want to watch the continuity properly, with three shows, that's 50 hours of TV a year -- and I'm about 100 hours behind where they are right now. That's a non-trivial investment of time.

Well last week my lady finished watching The Collector and thus needed something new for when I'm watching my boy's stuff. So she started on Grimm. Three eps in I decided to go and watch one and I must say I was completely blown away by how good it is. I generally tend to hate anything considered fantasy but it really is a quality proggy.

Thankfully all of the eps are free too.
