Have started watching Rick and Morty. S1E2 was amazing in every way, helped by the odd coincidence that I watched Inception the other night.

86 seconds in, it is brilliant.

IMDb likes it

A landmark film

Not since Citizen Kane has a film pushed the boundaries of what true film making is and contributed so much to epic story making. It brings tears to the eyes to remember this work of art once more. Where to begin...
The scene of the girl detectives taking balls to the face was a technical achievement of the highest order. This was only rivaled by the symbolism of the dog that was a puppet but really a dog..or was it a puppet? Not to mention the daring choice of having Japanese actresses play Indian, Chinese and Japanese roles, makes the viewer truly question identity; the "mystery of the game (volleyball or life? sic.) as well as its illusory qualities in life.
While some viewers may criticize the movies final scene with a 4 foot high volleyball net and a volleyball that is two dimensional, true movie lovers will understand the director's intent to surmount the all too common cgi and blue screen special effects of today with stylistic choices that only add to the story.
An amazing film that should not be missed if you can breathe. It is not hyperbole to claim this film as a monumental work that will stand the test of time.

I watched the first episode of Santa Clarita Diet last night and thought it was fantastic. Can't wait to watch the rest of the series.

Very interesting article here about DS9 and Voyager, and why they most likely will never be released on Blu-Ray. (TNG was given a fully restored and remastered Blu-Ray release, not that I ever bought it, even though I rather like TNG. (Not least because I don't have a Blu-Ray player). Never even watched DS9 or Voyager.)

You don't particularly have to be interested in DS9 or Voyager (I'm not), it's the article itself and what it's describing that's of interest IMO.

TL:DR is around the enormous effort involved in recreating everything from the original film stock and doing all the effects again, which for TNG apparently took some three years and cost over twelve million dollars.

http://www.treknews.net/2017/02/02/why- ... lu-ray-hd/

Quote:
Here’s where it gets both interesting and maddening. In the mid-1980s, the advent of cheaper and cheaper computing technology allowed video post-production to grow more and more sophisticated. Now, a new post-production methodology, once existing only for shows originating on videotape, like soap operas and talk shows, could now be applied to shows shot originally on film. A program could be shot on 35mm film, but instead of editing on film and then cutting negative, the original 35mm material footage would instead be scanned to videotape — at NTSC resolution, and the rest of the post-production process, editing, mixing, etc., would then be completed on tape, at a reduced cost. However, NO FILM NEGATIVE WAS CUT, so the final product would only exist on videotape, at NTSC’s greatly reduced video resolution and color. True blacks, stable reds and rich blues simply didn’t exist on videotape. Those shows originally shot on 35mm, with a 20 megapixel resolution, were never to be seen again if finished on tape.

Quote:
Unfortunately, this meant, unlike TOS and The Animated Series, there would be no 35mm finished negative of TNG… and the series would only ever exist on videotape at NTSC resolution. The same would hold true of DS9 and Voyager.

The TOS and TNG remasters are fantastic.

The show is great, but after rewatching TOS, TNG, and the associated movies, the dip in video quality for DS9 was a bit of a blow.

Even the redone VFX for TOS & TNG were done really well.

From the article above the difference between TOS and TNG is that they still had the original finished negatives for TOS, so they already had a great 'final' hi-def source for the film itself, and then redid the effects on top of that.

With TNG there were no negative masters to use, (as they'd mastered to videotape), so they had to go right back to the original film stock and 'make' all the programmes again, and then redo the effects - hence the massive increase in effort which wasn't reflected in sales, hence the unlikelihood of them bothering for DS9 or Voyager.

I note the complete TNG Blu-Ray boxset can be had for £51 from Amazon (41 Blu-Rays!), I'm almost tempted to snag that, and buy a Blu-Ray player too. But then again I only have a 720p telly. Hmmmm.

Quote:
So a radical notion was proposed…why not go back to the original negative and REBUILD the entire show, from from the ground up, in High Definition? In the history of television, this had never been done before. Essentially, all 178 episodes of TNG (176 if you’re watching the original versions of “Encounter at Farpoint” and “All Good Things”) would have to go through the entire post-production process AGAIN. The original edits would be adhered to exactly, but all the original negative would have to be rescanned, the VFX re-composed, the footage re-color-timed, certain VFX, such as phaser blasts and energy fields, recreated in CG, and the entire soundtrack, originally only finished in 2 channel stereo, would be remastered into thunderous, 7.1 DTS.

The wife and I started watching Vikings last week and got to the end of season one last night.

She likes it but I don't think I'm a fan. None of them are very likeable as characters and the fact that they make the English look stupid at every step of the way is really annoying me. Also, that snake pit that the king had? What was all that about?!?

I've no doubt that I shall carry on watching it but I'll be darned if I'm going to pretend to enjoy it.

Snake pit? That's the current season (4)! You've a bit of rewinding to do.

Of possible interest only to me but in preparation for the new series of Samurai Jack, the Adult Swim website is streaming all the previous episodes back to back with no ads.

We've started rewatching it from the beginning. It starts better than I thought it might have, although it's extremely noticeable that all of the characters are only half as awful as they are in the current episodes. First truly great ep is Hundred Dollar Baby, for my money.

I watched the first series and then got deeply suspicious of Danny DeVito joining and stopped watching. I should start again at some point.

For whatever reason, I just don't find It's Always Sunny funny. Not sure why, it feels like the kind of thing I should like. Suspect there may be a Seinfeld-like tipping point where everything slots into place and it all makes sense. But I've not got there yet (have watched half a dozen episodes).

The waitress is likeable (from what I've seen).

Keep watching.

FUN FACT The Waitress is married to Charlie in real life. (And Sweet Dee is married to Mac.)

I think I've said this before, but I just can't enjoy a show when I don't like any of the characters. I'm sure it's objectively very funny, but it's just not for me.

Glenn Howerton's wife guest-starred in The D.E.N.N.I.S. System too.

For whatever reason, I just don't find It's Always Sunny funny. Not sure why, it feels like the kind of thing I should like. Suspect there may be a Seinfeld-like tipping point where everything slots into place and it all makes sense. But I've not got there yet (have watched half a dozen episodes).

That's what happened to me. I didn't like the first few episodes because I found the humour to be too blunt. But after you get to know the characters you suddenly start to feel everything they do is hilarious like:

-What's the next disgusting or dumb thing charlie will do?
-What's the next horrible sociopathic thing Dennis will do?
-How they will make fun of Sweet Dee next?
-What's the next gay thing Mac is going to say.

Search Party is really good:
http://imdb.com/rg/an_share/title/title/tt5460226/

A group of self-absorbed Brooklyn millenials get drawn into investigating the disappearance of a college friend they haven't spoken to in years. It's true comedy drama, very funny at times but very dark and sad at others. Builds to a fantastic gut-punch of an ending. Alia Shawkat (Maebe from Arrested Development) is fantastic as the lead character.

It's got some good elements, but I think it's got a weird scatterbrained tonal inconsistency that's detrimental to the show as a whole.
