I don't suppose anyone's been watching Halt and Catch Fire? I just saw a mention of it on an Engadget article a few minutes ago having never even heard of it before and it sounds intriguing.

Basic summary from the Wikipedia page:

Quote:
The series is set in the Silicon Prairie of Texas in 1983 and depicts a fictionalized insider's view of the personal computer revolution. The show's title refers to the machine code instruction Halt and Catch Fire, which would cause the computer's central processing unit to cease functioning.

It seems to be reviewing well so I might give it a shot.

Yep, Halt.... has been excellent so far. I think I first saw it mentioned on here and have loved it from day one.

Sadly it's not looking too promising for a series 2.

Cool. Weirdly I actually like the fact that it's only ten episodes long rather than the slightly wearying 24 or whatever that most US stuff is these days.

More and more shows are doing 13 episodes or less now which is a definite step in the right direction. There's very few shows that can keep the quality up for that long.

Plus it presumably hurts the chances of stuff getting recommissioned because of the enormous financial commitment of saying that you'll fund another 24 episodes series. With smaller seasons it becomes more likely networks would take a chance on shows that have potential but haven't pulled in massive ratings quite yet.

Yeah, I've been watching Halt & Catch fire too. I recommended the first episode a page or two back when it became available online a couple of weeks before transmission.

Since then I've watched up to episode 6 (and have episode 7 to watch tonight) and it's been consistently solid. Really enjoying it.

I liked it too, especially the ending, was not expecting that at all.

Anyone watched The Strain?

"Drama based on Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan's horror trilogy, about a vampiric virus that has infected New York and the battle of mammoth proportions that follows."

One episode out with the 2nd on the 20th

Sounds a bit like a cross between the Walking Dead and True Blood!

Not really an US show, but i have been watching an incredible Portuguese drama series about the early eighties music scene, and there was an awesome and obscure reference to Championship Manager.

I had to pause it and explain it to my wife but it made my day. So cool that some screenwriter managed to squeeze that in.

What's that called then ? Sounds interesting (partly because I have a fondness for early 80's music but mainly because you described it as being "incredible").

Doing some rough translation, it's called "Sons of Rock", but i don't think it's of potential interest to foreigners since it mostly deals with the portuguese music scene of the late 70's/early 80s (the first years of democracy), and even if you were open minded enough for that, i doubt that there is english subtitles around.

Bojack Horseman looks like it could be interesting. An animated comedy starring Will Arnett (of Arrested Development fame) as a washed up anthropomorphic horse actor. Also features Alison Brie and Aaron Paul and is exclusive to Netflix beginning on the 2nd of August.

(Both have minor spoilers for the premise, which is built up to fairly slowly in the show.)

Big budget horror TV series from del Toro, based on the trilogy of novels he co-wrote with Chuck Hogan. Pleasingly, it's planned as a 3-5 season show, with a fixed timeline and a fixed ending. I like things that have an ending. Unsure how involved del Toro will be as time goes on, but he's been very hands on as writer, showrunner, and occasional director of the first season.

I've only seen the first episode so far, and although it's a bit hoary and clichéd in places (a ranting old geezer who's the only person who knows the terrible truth! A driven main character with family problems! Sinister businessmen in immaculate suits talking in oblique but threatening language!) it's generally well done (squirmy body horror! Intriguing somewhat-new take on a very old story!) Four episodes have aired in the US, to decent reviews.

I'm interested in 'The Intruders' which comes out soon. Drama made by BBC America, starting John Simm and others, based on a book by one of my absolute favourite authors (though actually one of his lesser books IMO).

I can't be arsed to find a trailer.

:D

Found another show Manhattan, not watched it yet there are 2 episodes out from a run of 13

Blurb below

Manhattan is set against the backdrop of the clandestine mission to build the world’s first atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico and follows the brilliant but flawed scientists and their families as they attempt to co-exist in a world where secrets and lies infiltrate every aspect of their lives.

After struggling half-heartedly through the first season of Hemlock Grove last year we just finished watching season 2 and we were both surprised to be really, really enjoying it by the end.

Another Sci-Fi show ... The Lottery

Quote:
Set in a world destined for extinction as women have stopped having children. When remarkably 100 embryos are successfully fertilized, a national lottery is held to decide the surrogates

Starting watching it the other night and fell asleep! So will give it another go this weekend, I feel asleep more as I was tired than the content of the show!

Three episodes in and I'm really enjoying it. The first was a bit slow, but it's developing nicely.

Oh, and Halt and Catch Fire just got better and better. Fingers crossed it gets a second series.

managed to get about 1/2 way through the 1st episode, hasn't grabbed me at all

I wasn't completely drawn in by the first episode but it left me interested enough to stick with it.

Totally hooked on it now. I like the dark, mysterious tone, the acting is great, and (in particular), the two episodes that focus almost entirely on a single character have been outstanding IMO.
Definitely not for everyone (some will just find it plain boring or silly I imagine - or they may just want to be spoon-fed easy answers) but I'm really enjoying it.

I watched the first two episodes last night - not bad, will continue watching. You have definitely hit the nail on the head with te cliches there, although you missed that staple of the horror genre, the terrifying small girl. With added French!

So, will watch. Despite some horrific SAMWISE GAMGEE.

I'm getting a bit bored of The Strain, 4 episodes in. I've just started, and am liking, Penny Dreadful. Massively helped by Mr Dalton and the lovely lovely lady who played Vesper in Quantum of Solace.

I'm missing some sci fi so may have another crack at Defiance.

Watched the first three episodes of Bates Motel. It's getting quite interesting, the kid from Charlie and The Chocolate Factory (the shit one with Jonny Depp) is good as the young, reimagined Norman Bates character. Not bad so far.

Penny Dreadful was pretty good, helped along remarkably by Eva Green's prodigious scenery chewing. She makes Dalton look understated by comparison. I didn't go back to The Strain after the second episode.

I missed the start of the last series, and only have episodes 6-9 on the planner. I need to see if episodes 1-5 are going to be repeated or put on demand as I really can't be bothered with shadey downloading these days.

Fuck me how a once great show turned to shit, the last season was total drivel. Ground through it more as my wife wanted to then deleted the lot from my NAS.

I resented the 10 hours of my life I wasted on the last season of this show.

There have been several pilot episodes of hopeful new US shows available for download recently.

One that caught my eye was a dark drama called HAND OF GOD starring Ron "Hellboy" Perlman.

Watched it tonight. Was quite impressed.
Not sure where it would go in future episodes but hope it gets a series regardless.

Can't be arsed providing a synopsis, you can google it :o)

Is anyone watching Extant? I see almost no mentions of it on the forum using the powerful SEARCH TOOL.

I've only watched the first 4 episodes so far, buuuut:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
* Why do future-NASA have their own SWAT team?
* Why is the director (Sparks) and that other exec so used to handling said SWAT team?
* Other than to point out to TV viewers that he is RUTHLESS and PURE-EVIL, why did Yasumoto make the guy take his mask off? That's like 50% of the research team now gone?! You don't get to be CEO of Evil Corp by being an idiot...

Also the creator/producer/writer of Extant used to be a Mall Santa, and even uses the name Molly in this post. CO-INCIDENCE?!

ps: I typed this message this morning and failed to press SUBMIT. Since then MaliA has posted about Extant. CO-INCIDENCE?

Just watched the first episode of S7 Sons of Anarchy.

It doesn't usually get this dark this until the end of a season, the last part of this episode ( a double one @114 mins) , was all played out to a western style version of Bohemian Rhapsody.

Doesn't get any better than that after a week away at the in-laws with only a crappy SKY basic package for entertainment !

Another Zombie show started Z Nation, surprised it took so long after the success of the Walking Dead

"is set three years after the zombie virus has gutted the country, and a team of everyday heroes must transport the only known survivor of the plague from New York to California, where the last functioning viral lab waits for his blood. Although the antibodies he carries are the world’s last, best hope for a vaccine, he hides a dark secret that threatens them all. With humankind’s survival at stake, the ragtag band embarks on a journey of survival across three thousand miles of rusted-out post-apocalyptic America"

Thanks. Just had a look at the trailer for season one on t'Tube and it looked ok-ish.

Then I realised that it was made by SyFy, creators of such trash as Sharknado and all that rubbish. And it had that skinny nerd guy who had sex with the big fat gal in American Pie-knock off, Road Trip. Plus, the trailer had some of the worse cheesy lines (attacked by zombie? "I give you mercy" *gunshot*). Oh it was all going downhill. Then I flicked through the comments which were overwhelmingly negative or the positives were that it was 'ok'.

I'm sorta leaning towards maybe not watching this then.

I flicked through the first episode and its very much about better equipped people fighting zombies (the remains of the US army) than the Walking Dead is. Will give it a shot and see, after all its got Zombies in it!

Having loved Clone Wars, the trailers for the new “Star Wars Rebels” from Disney look really rather good… IThe kids will love it.

Better equipped? There's only one former army guy left. I've watched the first 2 episodes, it's pretty bad, but in an ok way, it's a SyFy show, so you know what you're gonna get from it.

TBBT series 8 is ok after a slightly shaky start. But Penny just looks wrong with short hair. JUST WRONG.

There's rumours that Twin Peaks is coming back for a third series.
