Series 6 was fairly poor, but series 7 (hopefully the last one) has been back on form.

You're the nirjehenenenengegenenenege of telly. TBBT gets funnier and funnier. And the fact you think they made Kuthrapali "all gay all of a sudden" suggest you haven't been paying attention since sometime in series 2.

The show is already on Season 9. And yes, this is the last one

Given the circunstances, i'll accept that as a compliment. There are other things that annoy me in The Big Bang Theory.

- There's always a pause after the jokes for the "laughing track" to kick in. Yes, i know the show is played live and it's not really a laughing track, but it takes away much from the jokes. In the rare ocasion they're funny.

- Every joke is so completely obvious and it's possible to anticipate them a mile away. They always explore the same aspects from the characters. Yes, i know Sheldon is asexual and interprets everything literally. I also know that Howard's mom is fat and Farah Fowler was miserable in high school for beiing ugly and nerd. And so on

I think it has gone from affectionately mocking <grits teeth> "nerd culture" to downright attacking it. Penny was the eyes, ears and voice of the sympathetic audience, and I think that role shifted too much. Now we laugh at them, not with them.

I still like her.

'Modern Family' is really good at the moment. There have been some fantastic one liners in the first two episodes of the new series.

Yes, Bernadette is incredibly cute. For all the failings the show has, she isn't one.

And Modern Family is so full of awesome gags. I specially like the ones involving Haley's stupidity:

Mitchell's Boss: "Oh my god, look at your eyes!"

Haley: "I really can't"

That was one of the ones I was thinking about, and it being closely followed by Lily answering the phone was awesome:

Lily: "Daddy's phone."

...

Lily: "No, you sound like a little girl!"

Nah, you're wrong.

It's still genuinely laugh out loud funny every episode, which can't be said for many shows.

I shall continue my thread-spamming to say that House of Cards season 2 was consumed in a single day by me. Totes awesome.

Claire == Princess Bride was quite the mind-blowing revelation higher up in this thread.

A couple of annoyances though:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Two major threads of S1 were wrapped up within 15 minutes of the first episode. Zoe was killed, and the other chick who was suing Claire backs down and disappears almost immediately. They spent a lot of time building up both lines of those characters, so to see them hastily removed was a bit disappointing.

I must also remark that Rachel does however have the most awesome boobage. Disappointing lack of HD nudity in this season.

Holy shitsticks, that was a good series.

I'm still having some time-travelling anti-boners due to Claire, but there we are.

House of Cards Season 2 done last night.

It was very good. Not a consistently excellent as season 1, but thoroughly enjoyable.
I agree with the EBG spoiler text.

plus

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
the episode 11 threeway business was a little out of the blue and never mentioned again. I'm not sure of the point of it.

I'm up to episode 13 now, I'm enjoying it a lot. Although I'm not getting a feeling for quite how nervous Frank apparently is; it keeps having to be mentioned.

Really?

I saw things leading somewhere, I initially thought, from probably episode 9, that Claire was heading towards fucking Meecham but that it would be with Francis blessing. When it happened, I wasn't all that shocked. It's how they do things, they manipulate situations to work out how they want to.

Claire and Meecham, sure. Frank and Meecham, sure. A threesome out of nowhere? Hmmm.... Just didn't seem their style or something that fit in with how the plot had been going along. Plus it led to nothing.

Yes it was great - Mads Mikkelson is excellent, and it's very faithful to the source canon even though this is all new stuff.

Up to episode 5 of the second series of 'House of Cards'. Enjoying it so far, though currently does not feel as tight as series 1.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Pretty sure near the end there's a very brief close-up of someone I knew who was one of the re-enactor extras. Real shame we fell out so badly (see emo posts) - I had been looking forward to seeing the results of the three days he spent filming in and remember how thrilled he was when he told me what he had been up to. Not going to re-watch the episode looking for him

The whole time in Ireland was proper shit

I've forced myself to continue and it has picked up towards the end and is getting good again. Seasons 1 and 2 were great.
Should I continue with Season 4, it can't be worse than Season 3 can it? Does it get back to the original quality levels?

I am watching this and have now reached that place. I am also confused as to which of the other people are who, as they just seem to re-appear as if nobody has noticed their evil arch enemy doing the shopping IN THE SAME SMALL TOWN FOR THE PAST HOWEVER LONG AFTER THEIR DEFEAT.

So, there is a new / updated version of Cosmos being launched is a few weeks. Now I'm old enough to have watched (and loved) the original with Sagan so I was a bit suspicious of someone trying to remake it. However having heard a number of interviews with the presenter Neil DeGrasse Tyson I'm now looking forward to it.

...this is the latest one from NPR:

Grim... mentioned it on here somewhere, I think he liked it, I liked it, but I thought the characters were lazily written, very stereotypical.

If they make more I think I would watch (the ending of the episode was well worth the wait) a few to see where it went.

But I would hope the characters were a bit less one dimensional.

Aye, the Irish dude was awful and I agree the writing was lazy.
I'd watch it again though, as beside all that it was interesting.

Surprise Craster scale moment too, it's filmed in the way of all the other primetime shows, so that was unexpected.

Quote:
We are more than a bit concerned with the Benihana egg trick called for in the script. I’ve tried it and can only get it 1 out of 4 tries, and I’ve seen Benihana chefs flub the manoeuver when they have an entire grill as target. Mads has to crack his eggs into a 8-inch diameter skillet. The props Master calls his guy. The Production Manager calls in his guy. I call my guy. On the morning of the shoot we have 8 dozen eggs and 3 Japanese chefs with their hands made up to be hand doubles.

I guess I don’t have to tell you that when Mads arrives on set, I briefly describe the egg trick to him whereupon he just tosses an egg up in the air and breaks it perfectly on the spatula. Did it. Unbelievable. I insist it was a lucky fluke but he does it again. I accuse him of practicing when I wasn’t looking but he laughs (as if he has time to practise egg-cracking between scenes) and confesses he was a juggler in his youth.

And they made a cut in the scene so it strongly makes that quote look like LIES.

The fewer cuts a movie has, the better.

Except that one Russian movie I saw that was a single continuous take -- that was terrible and it had badly mixed MONO SOUND.

So, FARGO (the new TV series)....

Anyone watched the first episode of this ?

I'm a huge fan of the original Cohen Brothers film and was very skeptical as to how this would turn out.

Needn't have worried. Thought it was great & had the same feel as the film with quirky characters, black humour, sudden violent acts etc.

It did initially feel a bit too similar to the film (as far as the story-telling goes) but gradually started to diverge.

Also, it seems many critics have seen the first 4 episodes & reckon it gets better and more original as it goes on.

I'm definitely in for the long haul. Should keep me happy now that True Detective has finished.

P.S. Billy Bob Thornton's character is awesome.

I highly recommend Silicon Valley. The pilot was excellent.
