I'm a bit disappointed with the BeeX online gaming situation at the moment, seeing as most people appear to either want to play crap games *cough* Undertow *cough* or play fun games in the most un-fun way possible. All for a meaningless number.

We need to do some fun gaming, before all the whores get burned out and take an axe to their funbox. Who's with me?

Stuff that I own that I'd really like to Bezzie:

skate.
Madden 09 (I think you can set up a custom online league too)
Tiger Woods 09 (I really want to try the simultaneous online mode)
Unreal Tournament 3
Duke Nukem 3D
Battlefield: Bad Company.
Stuff n things.

I'd be up for Castle Crashers, if anywould would confirm that its a good game.

I'm still squareless, sob. Should sort it out soon.

In the meantime, I'm happy to play simplistic UFO-alike http://www.gunrox.com/, though.

Yes, I have a good score, but I play a lot of games, and most of that is natural, rather than deliberately gone for. I think I'm running at a fifth of available gamerscore (18.5%, stats fans) I've maxed 0 games.

The only things I've really gone out of my way for are stuff like Burnout Paradise's billboards and Stunt Jumps and the crashes, but by the time we'd done all the online play we did when it first came out, there were very few of those left. Oh, some of the Halo 3 ones, but those were mostly through online 'we might as well get it while we're here' while doing legendary run throughs in Co-op (not the supermarket)...

We've got to do that again, by the way.

To be honest, I'm not sure about the whole gamerscore concept. The fact that the devs still have trouble defining an achievement seems to say that its a bit nebulous. They're getting better, but there seems to be splits between skill-based, progress-based, and time-sink achievements, as well as the great online/offline debate....

I think the gamer score is a great idea as long as you ignore it entirely.

I've got Tiger 08, Morte, if you fancy a game sometime. I also have WSC 2007 and Brian Lara 2007 which you seem to play from time to time...

Despite playing the last umpty-thousand iterations of Madden on the PC and / or PS2, the demo of 09 left me confused and frightened.

I think I'm getting old.

Why? they've finally binned the stupid 'vision cone' bollocks, the play calling system is the same (but with actual called QB bootlegs) the only difference is that you've got the skill indicators underneath players. which are pretty obvious in themselves.

Oh and the expanded pre-snap menus, but there isn't really much added functionality there, its all stuff that existed before, but you had to remember how to do it on your own.

Madden 09 was actually the first demo of American Football that I actually understood, thanks to the coaching bit where it decides your skills.

No idea. Possibly because I've been on the PC version for the last 3-4 years and since that's the poor sister format EA have barely changed the interface in all that time. I reacted to the new pre-snap menus like those penguins who got transferred into a new enclosure that had been painted in bright colours - I went catatonic until it was taken away.

It probably just needs a bit more time to click with me. But there's no chance I'll be able to take over the living-room TV for hours at a time to play through Madden games, so it's a bit of a moot issue.

I think you're overstating the case here.

1) How long have we played Burny Pee for no points? well over 100 hours.
2) How long have we played CoD4, which has absolutely no points attached to multiplayer? I think I'm on about 2 days worth.
3) How many times have we played Halo3 through, despite already having got all the points? More than I can count.
4) You list Duke3D as one of the games you'd like to play. Well, we have been. You either haven't been around, or haven't sent us a message asking for an invite. When me and the Sheep were whoring Sonic2, Zardoz asked to play something, and we left to play Duke3D.
5) I'd love to play UTIII, it's an excellent game. But I have no idea who owns it. And I think we need at least 4 or so people to really make it worthwhile.
6) Yesterday, I spent a good long time playing VP:TIP, despite already having all the points I could reasonably get out of it - for fun.
7) Other games I have played online recently, which have been fun include Puzzle Quest, Bomberman, GripShift (More people need this) and Gears of War amongst others. Generally speaking, the explicit whoring of points has been done with two players and we've always stopped whenever someone else has sent a message saying that they want a game of something, so long as we both have the game required.
8) Something like Gauntlet, yes we did play for points, but we also played it as it was meant to be, and had fun doing so. And that we were playing for the achievements gave us one of the classic Bezzie gaming moments (didn't it, Mr Sheep)
9) We even had fun playing Undertow. Yes, it's not the greatest thing ever, but it's not as bad as some people made out. Besides, it's a laugh taking the piss out of crap things with your mates - that's one of the reasons I liked AP so much, as it was hilarious when they had crap games to take the piss out of. The plot and voice acting of undertow was pretty laughable.

Dave is right. When one of us helps another get some achievements in a game, often we're still playing the game and having a laugh. In Test Drive Unlimited, it also serves a purpose (as the achievements also unlock parts of the game as you go).

Quite often, the games with the most hardcore whoreage are singleplayer (Mass Effect, CoD4) so it's not like anyone else is suffering while it's done.

I see gamerpoints as being the modern equivalent of a high score... it's just a way of showing off your skill or (for lack of a better word) achievements in a game to other people. Quite how it's that different from people on here competing for the best scores in Gash Wars 2 or whatever and spending hours trying to beat that high score, I don't know. And I have been accused of wasting my time/life getting hard-to-get achievements.

Bits of me are really tempted by Tiger Woods... a golf game that isn't that hideous 3D Magic Golf Adventures (or whatever it's called) would be nice.

I used to love playing Mean 18 on the PC back in the day (heck, I found the diskette for it as part of that collection in my old bedroom) so I shall investigate how much it costs.

Perhaps it was the PC version or the slowness of the computer we were playing on (which seems odd, it was an XT which was standard IBM compatible kit at the time) but the little animation of the gopher at the beginning took forever.

It looked utterly horrendous (CGA graphics!) but remains the best golf game I've ever played.

My dad liked Augusta, I preferred Bush Hill as it had more water hazards.

I haven't played enough of the GTA multiplayer to work out what it is about, but the very idea of it has raised a desire in me to get 16 of us running around the city in 'free play' (assuming it has that) not doing the offical races or anything but making things up.

Sort of CoD4 jumping in the pool extreme max fun time.

But then I probably should have bought the game 8 months ago if I wanted that.

It looked crap on the Amiga, too. Still lots of fun, though. If you want to get Tiger Woods 08 it's about a tenner now. Plus you get to play with meeeee...

Oooh, I like the sound of that. Fun though the multiplayer stuff is, just causing havoc would also be fun.

It's a shame that the vagaries on online play stop the traffic and pedestrian density from being as high as it is in single player (where it isn't really high enough either)

If it involves you and Lave getting into a van and stopping by one of the adult video stores near Times Square before driving out to the secluded northern shore of Alderney and changing to nudey-man avatars, I retract my desire to play GTA4 ever again.

I don't see what we do on holiday has anything to do with your enjoyment of GTA IV.

Do you see what I did?

EDIT: But yeah, shame it reduces the pedestrian density. Does it keep all the vehicles? I like the idea of all going on a chaotic tour of Liberty City together. Playing hide and seek and stuff.

I have not played the new one, but if it is anything like San Andreas that sounds a good laugh.

I like the idea of burning up town, as a gang of enfant terribles, causing chaos, making up stories sounds like a laugh.

Awesome well that is four of us at least then, so it's feasible.

I love the idea of creating stories. But maybe to give 'enfant terribles' (wonderful) a semblance of structure (just to get it going) we could have a free city game where we take it in turns to set a goal or whatever, and once it's achieved (or run its course) either the winner or the next in line chooses what we do next.

But stupid goals. Of the top of my head I'm thinking of stuff like "first to jump to off a building to their death" "first to the statue of happiness" "Scooter Subway exploration team alpha" "first to jump ontop of a helicopter*"

*I would be interested to see what happens if you get a helicopter hovering under a bridge, and then players jump off said bridge into the roters.

Apparantly, if one person stands on the edge of a building and someone flies a helicopter so the rotors clip him, the physics model goes wonky and he is catapulted away at hundreds of miles an hour.

Apparantly, if one person stands on the edge of a building and someone flies a helicopter so the rotors clip him, the physics model goes wonky and he is catapulted away at hundreds of miles an hour.

Ooooh, that sounds fun!

Something like that.

As Dave says, we're just using the achievements as targets to aim for together really. It's always fun just kicking back with the Bezzies and NOT GETTING ACHIEVEMENTS BECAUSE THE BLOODY GAMES DON'T WORK RIGHT. Ahem.

Dave and my good self quite often play until the early hours whoring things but if someone wants to play a game I'm more than happy to play it if we both have it. We can whore over multiple sessions, so it's not a problem.

Right, then. Inspired by Lave, last night myoptika, sheepeh and loopdreams all played 'free mode' of GTA 4.

The traffic density isn't reduced quite as much as I expected... on 'High' there was still enough traffic for hijinx. Leaving the cops switched on was, to my mind, a mistake, as they're too easy to piss off and then too hard to get rid of. It didn't help that as soon as I picked loopdreams up, he starts leaning out the window and firing randomly at everything he sees.

We tried a few things:
-helicopter gunship duel: impossible due to the camera system, using cockpit view made it a bit easier but it still lurches around so much you don't realize how much altitude you're dropping and then you've landed in the river.
-running people over with boats: works.
-picking people up out of the water with a helicopter: inconclusive... it might work, but staying just a few inches above the water so they can clamber in without your helo sinking itself is very tricky.
-jumping into the blades of a helicopter (on foot): SPLAT!
-jumping into the blades of a helicopter (on motorbike): you're flung end over end for MILES.
-jumping into the blades of a helicopter (in a car): didn't find out. As the cops were STILL pissed at loopdreams, while he hovered waiting for me at the end of the ramp to drive my car over, the cops were peppering him with bullets. I missed the first time I tried to drive over the edge (too fast, so flew over him), and by then the cops had blown his helo up.

So, next time, no cops, perhaps. However, it is extremely amusing to see armies of cop cars go tearing past to go and mess with someone else, or to have someone else (myoptika) trying to kill you, but the cops are after him so he is so busy dealing with them you can just stroll cheerily away. On on occasion, there was a long cop standing on the helipads shooting vainly up at someone flying away... right on the edge. So, naturally, I walked up behind him and hit 'B', shoving his donut-filled ass into the river. Heh.

I like the sounds of this!! I'd like to play... I never really got into GTA4 as the single player wasn't my cup of tea and the multiplayer.. well, i'm not good enough.

But I would like to dick around on it!!
