To celebrate their 10th birthday, Google have put up a search engine with their oldest backup index set - 2001, and they've included crosslinks to the Internet Archive for old content that is no longer on the live web.

For starters, it doesn't know who Sarah Palin is, so that's already ahead of the modern one in my opinion. WoS didn't exist either. Err, I've run out of cool searches. There must be more.

Yes. So are the first two, but that is all. I'm 6/10 on the current Google search for me though.

Searches for "flickr" and "facebook" are interesting. The former is just a typo, the latter still an internal Harvard-only website.

Rock the fuck on, baby. It has a listing for my Green Day page, hahahaha, the first page I made on the t'internet.

A quick search for my name reveals I was utterly unknown by Google back then. Sniff.

Already obsessed with vengeance, even so long ago?

Edit -- and it has a web counter GIF at the bottom too. Man, I haven't seen a real one of those in years. I think they all retired to a home with all the email me buttons (with spinning chrome 'e's) and animated WORK IN PROGRESS signs with a picture of a man digging up a road.

LOLcats barely existed last year, let alone in 2001. [Citation supplied].

I wish LOLCATS still didn't exist. I wonder by using the magical 2001 search I can eradicate it from history using some kind of wormhole. [SUB PLEASE INSERT SCIENCE]

I don't think I realised you were at Cardiff (or when you were at Cardiff). I wonder if our paths ever crossed (maybe I spilt a pint on you at some point).

I did a BSc (computer science and physics) from Sep 98 - Jun 2001, then my PhD (compsci) from Sep 2001-Sep 2005. I lived in the city from 98 to mid 2003, and then moved back to where I grew up; but I was still here regularly doing PhD things. I am also in Cardiff RIGHT NOW as I've worked here since April.

Good owd SCAT (the college!!) I remember fondly when some little sod decided to register that name under something else and the college was up in arms about it, good times, good times...

Hold on...

G-were you at Radbrook or London Road?!

I was at London Road. And yes, the debacle with shrewsburycollege.co.uk in 2005 was very amusing. It was actually me that sorted it all out and managed to get the domain name back for the college using the dispute resolution procedures. Turns out it was a student that had registered the domain and filled it with scatological pictures, and he'd registered it under his own name.

What a doofus.

When I was at North Shropshire College (although I think its now Walford and North Shropshire or something), the official domain was n-shropshire.ac.uk, and a guy I knew registered n-shropshire.co.uk and put a few little jokes about some teachers on it.

Oppsie, he was called in to see the principal, got a very stern talking to, and the domain name was thereafter blank until it expired and was then swiftly re-registered by the college. Haha!

Why on Earth is that creepy? It's probably the largest college in Shrewsbury and the surrounding area attendance-wise :p

I was there from September 2000 to July 2002.

And we're (as in, the company I work for, run by Curiosity's step-sister (?)) trying to persuade Shrewsbury College to let us re-do their website, because it's terrible and is running off a content management system that they bought for £10,000 from EDS without actually getting a demonstration of what it was capable of.

yeah I know but if you put myspace in you get 72000 search results, whereas youtube not even a single one. I think what I find amazing is how quickly a word can be created by the internet, search google today and you get something like 1 trillion results for youtube.

I was busy failing a BSc in Maths from Sep 96 - Jun 2000, but Cardiff didn't want me around and I was forced to scurry off, very broke, in Feb 2001.
