Hello excellent ladies and gentlemen.

I want to knit a present for a dear friend who lives in Italy. She has recently moved across Italy to Roma.

I do not know the temperatures in Rome and so do not know what is warm and what is cold. I am not so stupid as not to Google it before you all start firing rude web acronyms (don't tell me it isn't an acronym, either, cos I know) at me.

Anyway, the little table below gives average temperatures.

The problem is, I do not understand temperatures at all. I do not know what number corresponds to a warm day, to a cold day, to a freezing day... If someone could tell me what it is like in winter (December/January) in Roma, and how that corresponds to, say, a month in our UK temperatures (so, January in Roma is like April in the UK) I'd love you forever.

Without knowing it'll make it very hard for me to make her something suitable to her climate.

Sorry for sounding like an idiot :(

A reasonably hot summer day in the UK is ~25C.

We might get down to 0 on what you'd call a really quite cold winter day.

Today in London is 15C apparently.

So yeah, on a pure temp basis I think you might be about right, their spring and autumn is close to our summer in heat. Their summer is a step hotter and their winter averages about "Today".

That's very handy Dudley, Thankyou.

I did read that it can get quite cold in Rome, but I want to make something she can wear on days other than the freak freeze-out, so maybe a lighter scarf or pair of gloves. Perhaps a cotton/merino mix so that they will keep chills off but not be too warm.

Thankyou Dudley for your help.

There is nothing sub-zero there, so I guess frosts are pretty rare. A big winter coat or think furry hat would probably be a bit overkill.

Bare in mind that if she's moved from Scilly to Rome she might find it a bit chilly in winter, whereas Milan is wetter and colder than Rome ( but still warmer than here ).

What about the ski resorts there, then, what makes the snow?

It would appear so.

I went on an ill-advised holiday to Rome in February once. It was very cold indeed.

I recommend a Comfort Rating of 5 below, or 27 TOG, whichever is easier to knit.

When I travelled to Rome it was uncomfortably hot. Everything is stone, so the heat bounces off every avilable surface, and there's no shade to speak of.
