I have no idea if any of you have seen this yet.

It's a bit limited as it's just a sample, and I'm not sure what to make of it, but it seems to be meeting with blanket disapproval from most quarters,

I don't see why things need a 'new look' when the old look works perfectly fine.

See also: OS X Leopard, Windows Vista, and the horrendous new Ford Fiesta.

I quite like the new Fiesta. Also, you may be experiencing early onset fogeyism there, Meaty :DD

But with regard to this, I think this is one huge last push on MS's part to try and capture some of the market Nintendo have carved or simply to expand their market - so they're re-inventing themselves by making the dash simpler and flasher (IYSWIM) and are allegedly spending a metric fuckton of cash this autumn/winter advertising the machine and it's games.

When does this happen? I read a little about it a few months ago, I wondered why Nintendo Miis were all over the pages about the 360.

Anyhoo, maybe you are also being an old fogey, DB. Give it a chance.

Perhaps but I don't think the dash does work well. It's cluttered, it's difficult to navigate (they've openly admitted there are hundreds of times more things in the XBLM store now than it was designed to cope with), and it's basically the second naffest interface my TV displays (the worst being the Sky HD one).

Yes, I actually prefer the XMB, at least to look at. Mind you perhaps it's less cluttered because it doesn't do as much ARF ARF

I'm looking forward to it, as scrolling through endless lists of demos and XBLA games is not fun.

Also: multi-chat and the ability to drag a whole posse of people from game to game!

@ DBSnappa: Oh yeah, weird.

To be honest I don't like the current 'blades' menu that much. What are people hating about the new look?

Oi you! I said I didn't have any thoughts on it yet and I know where you live and I can come round and put you over my knee, young lady, etc.

I'm with DrG with regard to the current one not being that great as it feels like it's not coping with the volume of info it has to handle/categorise/archive/access

WHERE does it say I hate it? I'm pretty open minded at the moment. I like some of the new features!

I dread to think how much these pushes for market share cost them. I imagine each machine results in a fair old loss even before the latest price drops. I actually hope MS are making money somewhere along the line with this as I wouldn't want someone high up to come along and say 'you've spent HOW MUCH on this??' and scale things back.

It might even mean that Frontlines is playable in multiplayer mode.

Oh, so you did. Sory. I got the posts all mixed up and semed to take the 'blanket of disapproval' to mean that you agreed. OOps, sorry about that - I had a lie in :smug: I am just awakened (shhhh, don't tell anybody I have been super lazy!).

I've bought gamerpics when I've had the odd 80-100 points lurking on my account doing nothing. I've not bought themes, though.

Nope. I'll download the free stuff but I'm not paying for stuff I can't even preview first.

I thought that smelt a bit of "oh shit, yeah, we sold people a bunch of stuff that can't really be used any more... Ummm... bung the themes in the in-game menu, and sorta, crop their wallpaper behind NXE and... ummm.. put the gamerpic... uhh, over there. Yes. Hurrah! See, we're not taking stuff off you at all, consumers!"

The gamerpic is all but worthless now, tbh. I've only ever bought two - one was the CoD3 flag packs (to get a Canadian flag), the other was the Puzzle Fighter pack (to get my current Hsien-ko pic). Themes are a complete waste of time, as they made reading the text on each blade almost impossible.

I maintain that the little 360 avatar people will all look very samey, as 90% of 360 users are likely guys with short brown hair.

Just so long as they can actually get live working before then...

I already have totemball. I wish I didn't.

Update:

I think I can cope with that.

Well one significant improvement from the other day's update, is the reintroduction of the "all your friends list on one page" on the website. I HATED the separation into pages that they introduced.

I got kicked out but it logged me straight back in again.

Also, you can have Megaman 9. That game is HATEFUL beyond belief. I'm too old for these "hardcore" games now.

Creative Director, Donald Mustard was quoted, “We’ve really enjoyed designing Undertow for Xbox LIVE Arcade because it’s given us the freedom to create a pure gaming experience focused on fun, addictive game play. Whether a player is looking for hours of intense multiplayer or they have just 10 minutes for the ultimate gaming experience, we’re confident Undertow will be as exciting to play as it has been for us to create.”

Donald's dad (Col. Mustard) is spinning in his grave. I didn't realize the ultimate gaming experience was sending tiny, impossible to see submarines out to battle other tiny, impossible to see submarines in a collection of dowdy levels. I can see what they were trying to do (the closest thing I can imagine is a multiplayer Jetstrike) but it just sucked BALLS.

Upon release, Undertow garnered significant praise and media attention for its high quality visuals, variety of game play, and flawless execution. The game received numerous Editors Choice Awards from leading gaming publications and websites, including Official Xbox Magazine, IGN, and Team Xbox. IGN also selected Undertow as its Game of the Month for November 2007. Undertow was nominated for Microsoft's 2007 XBLA Awards and 1UP's 2007 Editors Choice Awards and was selected by Official Xbox Magazine as its 2007 Game of the Year for Xbox LIVE Arcade.

Oh, fuck off.

Have they fixed Live yet? I will want to play on Friday night, and miss my Bezzies.

Am sadly away with work on a team whatsit tonight. And the beer's only free until the very small tab runs out, unlike last year when it was free the whole night. Apparently this is due to "health and safety reasons". Oh do fuck off.
