My daily commute to work involves a 20 minute tram journey which, quite frankly, is far too much time on my own for me to think. Anyway, one of the conductors wears travel sickness wrist bands and I can't help but wonder what on earth would make someone with travel sickness want to be a tram conductor.

Has anyone else come accross people with completely unsuitable jobs? Perhaps a air stewardess with a fear of flying or a vet with a fear of animals?

Thanks for your time,
Msoptika x

To be fair, if you enjoyed killing old people a GP is the obvious career path to follow.

I've know several teachers who really couldn't stand kids. They must have loathed their jobs.

The landlord of a pub I used to use described himself as 'a morning person'. Strange choice of occupation, then...

Maybe not so strange, after all, he then has his mornings to himsef, to enjoy. That's probably why he was a morning person :D

Surely as a pub landlord you need to sleep during the mornings? It's rare they get to sleep before 3am.

My brother is a pub landlord - that's never been the case for him, but he's the only pub landlord I know personally, so he may be an anomaly.

I suppose it depends on what type of pub. If it's a local village pub that closes at 11, I can see that at a push they could be all tucked up by 12:30-1am; but in a Wetherspoons on a Fri/Sat night, which don't close until late and have a lot of vomit/piss to clean up - no chance.

A mate of mine is a police sergeant and yet spends his evening torrenting movies of t' Interweb. I would imagine that's fairly inappropriate.

On the flipside, another friend of mine is a Customs Officer at Heathrow Airport, and whilst I love the guy dearly, he is truly one of the most miserable and officious people I've ever met. He was clearly born to do that job!

Well, he was a pub landlord in a pub in London, now he's landlord of a pub in Lancaster, and his pubs are always spotless and efficient. Maybe it is more to do with not letting glasses, plates and the like pile up. when ever I have been to one of his pubs it is very efficient, so maybe it is partly to do with that.

My schoolfriend was an official at Heathrow airport, too. he used t enjoy smuggling illegal immigrants into the country. Where job and hobby collide, eh?

With all the will in the world you can try to be as efficient as you like in a massive city-centre pub, but if you've got brawls to prevent, pissed people to eject and lazy staff to cajole; you're still going to spend a fair time getting everything cleaned up (especially if you have a kitchen as well).

Well, I can only say that you are wrong in this instance, because that's not the way it has ever been. I know because I used to go there with a friend and I'd wait until everything was cleared and locked down and then he'd drop me home. I was never there until silly-o-clock. I also used to work as a barmaid when i was a student, and we would have to stay until locking up, and we'd always be out by midnight, but that was on the outskirts of Lancaster rather than the city centre - mind you, that also saw more fighting than any other pub I ever did, which was why I eventually left (a chair was thrown into the bar where I was standing and smashed everything... The landlord started the fight.)

I think it was 11:30, but it was about 8 years ago so it may have been 11. I lived about 10 minutes fast walk away (and I walked very fast because I don't like being in the dark at night) and I'd often get through my door just as the clock shifted over to midnight with a 'click' to stop the chimes.

No, I think you misunderstand. I said that I used to work in a quiet pub, but we were talking about my brother, who is a morning person, who was landlord of a city chain pub, who never got home at 3am. :p

So his pub closed at 2am and he got home before then? I'm really confused.

No, I didn't say his pub closed at 2am.

Sigh. I assume you have not read anything I have written Myoptika, so you might as well be asking me if he really does like fishcakes or not. His pub was one of the large chain pubs (Ember Inns, I think they may have been called - they are owned by the same people that own the 'Scream' pub name, etc). It was a Pub in London, busy but friendly. He now runs a pub in the centre of Lancaster which I have not been in.

Ok, this stops now. In order to try not to derail this thread any further, I'll just succintly explain that my whole point was that people who run pubs that shut at 1 or 2am are not going to get to bed until gone 3, which means that they will be sleeping for most of the morning.

This means that being a morning person and a landlord is completely pointless as you will be sleeping for most of it.

Right, so fishcakes eh? Not as good as fish fingers.

Did anyone who's eve been to/lived in Lancaster ever go to 'The Park' (the pub called 'The Park' rather that the actual park, I make this distinction for Myoptika. The Park pub is in a residential area but very close to what is now the University of Cumbria but was once St Martins. I do not know what time 'The Park' is open until. The park (Williamson Park) is on a hill and the gates are shut at sundown to stop anyone stealing the paving stones after a spate of thefts. It is out of the city centre).

So - anyone ever go to the pub called 'The Park'? If you got there before 11pm there was a lock-in, every single day. Half the time the staff were to drunk to remember to charge you for drinks. The police never did anything about it because they were always in there. It was completely shameless :)

There is an excellent fish and chip shop only a short walk away from my house. They do hake and mushy peas and everything.

So, naturally, it seems to be open for about 20 minutes a week.

Likewise, there's a pub directly across the road from my house that does excellent food. So, naturally, there's never any tables left unless you booked about five years in advance, and it's so crammed with tables that there's nowhere to just sit and have a pint. So I never go there either.

Is that the tiny little road with the overgrown shrubbery that's near the huge Vet's practice and just before Dale Street and the like? It used to have some of those strange plants that grew what looked like tiny paper lanterns down at ground level? i think I know which road you mean. I lived in Bowerham also, a little further up on Ulster Road (just pass Double 2 video and Bowerham Chippy) and Palatine avenue.

Anyhoo, The Park used to have really long lock-ins, didn't it?
