Do American PS3 games work on a UK machine running through HD?

I don't think they will but a friend of mine thinks they will.

I wouldn't have thought so - Sony are twats when it comes to region-coding.

Yes, they do. All PS3 games are region free. Some foreign ones don't have PAL code in them so don't work in SD, but all PS3 game discs work on all PS3s in HD.

All PS3 games to date are region free, as are about 2/3rds of BluRay film releases. A lot of PSP UMD games are region free too. I have friends who have imported a lot of PS3 games without problems. One downside is that the DLC is tied to the regional store you bought the game from; if you import, say, Rock Band from the States, you have to have a second PSN account with the region set to US to buy DLC from the US PSN store. This is fiddly, although it does work. Sony have never (yet) restricted access to PSN store regions according to the console's region.

On the other hand, the PS3 enforces a region lock for DVDs and BluRays, and also for PS2 games played through backwards compatibility.

This is especially annoying with a game like NASCAR, where fuck-all people are going to be playing it in Europe.

That sounds very silly! Limiting a world wide audience? Crazy!

But thanks to everyone for answering.. it put my mind at rest.

Not so much limiting a world wide audience, but making sure latency is lower. Not having to travel across the atlantic = faster connection = better net play.

I like* how Play Asia list PS3 stuff as being region free but then go on to say they won't ship them to the EU anyway.

* I probably wouldn't like it if I actually owned a PS3.

Oh, I do. Makes a mockery of them making the games region free.

I bought a pre-modded PS2 from Lik-Sang. It was all my fault, sorry. :hat:

I got a pre-modded GC from them too. Was there a worse console to buy from an NTSC territory? I thought I was being all clever remembering how screwed PAL territories were by SNES, and then GC was released over here for a really low price with added RGB.

And now with the backWiid compatibility. What a mistake-ah to make-ah!
