Nintendo has developed a new, feature-laden DS handheld console, according to a Japanese newspaper.

A report by Nikki Net stated that the latest model will sport an internal camera, music player and a larger screen. Improved wireless functionality was also mentioned.

A reference was made to using the console’s camera to play games, and there’s a possibility that a memory card slot will also be included for moving data between the handheld device and, say, the Wii.

The latest model hasn’t received a name yet, but the report also mentioned that Nintendo may unleash the new DS in Japan sometime before Christmas. It’s worth noting that the company already has a press conference scheduled for 2 October – the same day that Nokia’s Tube could be unveiled on.

It’s thought that the new DS will cost somewhere in the region of ¥20,000 (£105/$188/€130). A DS Lite already costs about ¥17,000 (£89/$160/€112) in Japan, suggesting the new version will be a 'premium'

Urk.

I don't see the need for a new DS at all. The only thing in that list that makes sense is improved wireless, but that could easily enough be built into a revision, rather than a new model. The camera sounds dreadful—like the current console's mic. And a music player? Bleh. Short of Nintendo directly enabling external storage, that's simple impossible, and even if Nintendo does do this, I can't see many people jumping to it.

It seems a little pointless tbh. if it only costs ~£15 more, it can't be that much of an improvement.

It did say room for memory add-ons - probably SD cards if they want to make data transferrable to the wii. I don't know why they'd want to do that with the DS though, as there is already an easy wi-fi link between the two consoles.

Also, if there IS a camera, an SD card would make sense.

Actually, it makes more sense the more I think about it.

Working with my router's wi-fi would be a good thing as well. Stupid DS wi-fi.

No-wi-fi

Could it be a move to delegitimise R4-style carts? If so, I can't see it being very successful considering how many DS/DS Lites there are already out there.

She's probably referring to the fact the DS doesn't support any security beyond WEP. While we're on the subject, the PSP only supports 802.11b, not g. Hello, 1997's IEEE called, they want their standards back.

It's a linksys wireless-G thingamabob. I love it (I bought it off someone on WoS, actually) and it has always worked perfectly, but my DS dislikes it. It works with everything else - the DS says it has the 'wrong kind' of security, or something. I blame the DS because my router works hard.

The DS at the moment only does WEP, so any upgrades to this would be very welcome.

I still only have the original DS, now living on the girlfriend's side of the bed, so I would be very interested in an upgrade.

My Linksys worked with the DS, after a firmware upgrade. What model is your thingamabob? Also, are you using a security protocol other than WEP?

I have no idea whatsoever. Someone on WoS helped me to configure it very patiently and using small words, many moons ago. I have never 'fiddled' with it because if I lose my internet connection I would have no way of getting back on the internet to see what I had done wrong :P

Anyone using WEP to protect their wireless these days needs a smack. It's fundamentally broken.

My router at home runs WEP because of DSs. I ran it unsecured for years!

Mine's set up with MAC Address filtering. Probably not ideal but does the job.

When I ran it unsecured, I lived in a big Edwardian house with large gardens. A warwalk with my iBook (known for strong reception) determined it didn't reach the road, the back alley, or any house beyond my immediate neighbours. The neighbours on one side were really nice and the ones on the other side in their 90s. All my machines on the network were appropriately secured anyway.

Now it's WEPped, and I can tell all my neighbours have their own wireless LANs. I think the days of using other people's networks are largely gone now.

When Ange was house sharing a few years ago, her and her housemate ran their internet unsecured as they didn't know any better. When they finally did get it sorted, their next-door neighbours (students) knocked on the door asking if they could enable it again, as otherwise they'd have to go all the way to campus to use the internet.

I imagine you can guess the answer Ange gave them. :)

It does sound like you're using WPA rather than WEP security. I certainly used my DS with a Linksys router much like the one in your picture (albeit with one aerial). I had to upgrade the firmware, but that was ages ago, so yours should be ready to roll straight off.

DO NOT DO THIS.

Unless you really like people using your internet, potentially to access sites you will be blamed for.

If "people" do access sites you will be blamed for, having an unsecured wireless has actually got people off in the past.

I can't see Ninetndo releasing a new DS apart from minor changes to the innards. I suspect it's a rumour put about by unscrupulous rivals in an attempt to stall Christmas sales.

Apparently, this story originally came from a single, unreliable source, and has since been quoted on many sites, which is why many people believe it to be true.

Not saying it isn't, I just think it's doubtful.

I mean, who really wants a camera or music player on a portable games console these days when most of us have a mobile phone with these functions ?

Also, isn't the DS-Lite still selling rather well in it's current incarnation ? No need for Nintendo to relase an upgrade/sequel for quite a while yet as far as I can tell.

Let's just say, I'll believe this when I see it (and I don't expect to see it)....

I wouldn't have thought that this stuff would be much use unless the DS gets a capable metamenu like the 360 or PS3, which seems unlikely because it would take up a bit of memory, which the DS doesn't have... unless the DS-superdupe has a specially hardware virtualised DS? (Like the DS has a GBA?)

Summary of actual changes games will ever use.

"No GBA slot"
"Costs more"
"Cameras will ruin games as effectively as the mic does"

I agree with both of these points. I got rid of my DSlite and would like a new one.

Bigger screen? Downloadable games? Pure win. No GBA slot? I don't care.

The DS could get a really good downloaded games market going. I'm really interested to see where that goes.

I guess it makes a difference that the rest of us have had downloadable games onto onboard memory for a very long time :)

I posted on my blog about the changes. My summary was: "Overall, this announcement rates fairly highly on the game-o-scale. It’s not a Rhythm Tengoku of goodness, but more a Zoo Keeper where you’re forced to play Quest Mode against your wishes every 40 minutes."
