I am considering two possible responses to this.

Firstly, dry and technical: "Note the capitalised "U" on Update. I am using it as a conjoined proper noun "Fall Update", which is how Microsoft refer to it, because they are American. I am adopting their nomenclature as that is the clearest communication method under the circumstances. I personally do not use the word fall as a season."

Or rude and hostile: "You'll be heading for a fall in a minute Dimmers."

The only way I remember how the clocks go is "spring forward; fall back". I don't use the word 'fall' in any other sense, though.

"Aluminum" was actually the original spelling of course, the Brits changed it to "Aluminium" and the Yankees didn't. Same as all the "-ize" endings.

I find it hard to take advice on language from a man who, on average, only has a 33% chance of using a word that's actually in the dictionary every time he talks (and 33% of the time that word is 'fair')

Not true.

'Alumium' was actually the original spelling. For reasons that seem to be lost in time, it was later changed to 'Aluminum' which the Americans adopted and kept, but it upset the 'ium' ending to all the like elements, so we added a letter to keep it in line with the rest, so we adopted the spelling 'Aluminium'.

Fallesque. Or perhaps fallique. And in late August and early November, sometimes, it's fallish.

I don't know if platinum is in the same group of elements as aluminium, my knowledge of chemistry is close to zero, but I happened to read about the history of the naming of aluminium in a book last night, by coincidence (a book on etymology and language development).

According to Bill Bryson, that's true of the Fall/Autumn thing, too. A lot of words we think of as "Americanised" (or Americanized, if you like) are the original Ye Olde English versions which the colonials hung onto in a "more English than the English" kinda way even after the mother tongue moved on in the motherland.

I don't know what totally mental reason they've got for writing their dates down wrong, though.

Does anyone know the history of that? Like most programmers I find date formats hateful. Also: timezones. When you work on travel software, timezone bugs mean you send people to the airport 24 hours late. That's fun for everyone.

It's because Americans would say "April fifth" rather than "fifth of April", like we do. Hence they write it down in the same manner. They just don't like using superfluous conjunctions, it seems (see also "Two-thousand eight" rather than "Two thousand and eight").

We say 23rd of January 2008 so we write 23/01/2008

They say January 23rd, so write 1/23.

WHY they say it differently I can't tell you.
