Hello all. I am currently getting a ludicrously overpriced connection through Tesco Broadband, for which I pay £17.99 a month for a pitiful 1meg line with a 3gb useage cap.

After seeing the many recommendations about Be and O2 I decided to try them, but apparently they do not offer packages in my area yet.

Can anyone recommend a service that is cheaper than £17.99 a month, with no useage cap, and is faster than 1meg?

Sadly not. And it's not a cabled area either.

to counter this recommendation, my Sky broadband, though largely reliable now, did have significant periods of be unusably slow for the first six months.

Like all the cheap providers, it depends how good your phone line is and how far you're from your nearest exchange. But Sky would be as good as any and, jeez, two tins on either end of a bit of string sounds better than the deal you have at the moment.

Just to add another question to this thread - are there other cable broadband providers besides Virgin? Their 3 for £30 offer was pretty good but only lasts a year so I might look elsewhere - if there is an elsewhere.

I'm about half a mile from the exchange. Would Sky involve having to get the TV bundles as well?

Just switched over to Talk Talk:

8meg (up to) line 40gig a month usage
Line rental
Free evening and weekend calls (and some international)
Free Wireless router

£30 setup

£16.99 per month thereafter (first three months half price)

Everything is up and running smoothly too.

That doesn't sound like much. What happens if you go over, are you throttled or cut off?

No, but it's exceedingly cheap if you do get the TV bundle.

Sam Knows broadband. Specifically, what (if any) unbundling has been done, or is due, in your exchange. Or it used to, anyway.

They said they'd slit my gizzard.

Er, actually they said not much would happen. If I was really norty they'd cap me for a while. 40gigaflops is plenty for me.

I was with Plusnet. Now I'm £14.99 better off every month.

Same 8meg connection. Same 40gig allowance.
