Empire magazine lost its way many years ago. It's not worth the paper its written on.

Come back HOTDOG, all is forgiven.

"In The Company Of Men" is fantastic, disgusting, abhorrent film. A must see.

Edit: The Fountain *represent*, one of my favourite films.

Edit2: ooh, and Unbreakable, I loved that.

I might wait for the magazine to arrive.

I do hope Jason X is in the list. I put it seventh when I voted, so it might make it!

Ah. That's silly. Numbers 500-201 are fairly meaningless without knowing what comes above them.

I think I've seen 79 of what they've got so far.
I'm not particularly proud of the exact 79 as there's a lot of (supposedly) good films in there I've never seen, and there's a good few that I could add on if I could just be bothered to watch them as they're sat on the shelf behind me.

The only really decent writer in Empire remains Kim Newman, in my opinion. Their articles are really getting a wee bit lazy, despite the odd exception like a rather wonderful Night of the Hunter effort.

Read some of the list. Not sure what the Goonies and a bundle of others are doing in there to be honest. Also, AI better than My Neighbour Totorro? Fuck off.

I haven't looked at this yet, but it looks like a "As voted for by the public/readers" so it won't be the best film that comes top, just the most popular LCD one, so I agree that it'll probable be Star Wars or Lotr, neither of which should be in the top 50 really.

You can count on it with the Rev voting, I know deaf blind people with better taste in film than him :DD

I've seen 100 so far (with a few more in my "to watch" pile).

The best page for me was 242-233; out of the 10 I've seen 6 (Brighton Rock, Forrest Gump, Black Narcissus, Battle Royale, Bourne Ultimatum and Temple of Doom), with one more (Cinema Paradiso) waiting to be watched.

No 468: The Crow. Really? Is there anyone who voted for that who isn't a goth? It was awful. And "28 Days Later" higher than "Juno"? "Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull" above "Full Metal Jacket"? "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" there at all? Nice to see entries like Tom and Jerry in "The Cat Concerto" there, though.

To the credit of the people who have voted, people do seem to have voted for their favourite films, rather than the films they should be seen to claim as their favourites. I'd much rather watch Army Of Darkness or Dumb And Dumber again than Un Chien Andalou*, like any rightminded person. And if Mallrats makes it into the top hundred, I'll be well chuffed.

Oh, and having rewatched it recently, The Goonies has aged terribly. It's one of those things that is much better left in the memory.

(* Edit - I stand corrected. "Un Chien Andalou" is at 354. Bah. Pretentious gits.)

I can't cope with this much wrongness this early!

(Oh, OK. The Goonies is a terribly 80's movie. But in a good way.)

80s

Also, revisiting pleasures enjoyed in childhood almost invariably leads to disappointment, and can taint the memories themselves. Best to treasure what was, and what is now, and do not try to combine the two.

I should never have bought Ulysses 31. Weep.

Ha! I thought it was shit the first time around. See: Transformers and Thundercats.

That really pisses me off about the systemic raping of my childhood memories - "Remember how everyone was into thing X. Er... no?"

This would be better if they did it as a text file.

I'd be surprised if it's that different from the top 500 on IMDB, mind.

Jeepers. I wouldn't have put any of those top ten in the top ten. There are several between 11 and 20 that deserve places higher, but it's all a bit predictable when you get the great unwashed in to vote, I suppose.

Too right. While the first one was very, very nearly as good* as the second, the wonderfully circuitous plot of the second makes it the most enjoyable. The third movie seemed to smack of "well, just in case the second film bombs, we'd better do this one on the cheap. We're only paying for one set."

(*I'd recommend watching the trivia track on the BTTF DVD. It's packed with brilliant little hidden things like how Marty travels back in time from the parking lot of the Twin Pines Mall. As he drives into 1955, he runs over a small tree before crashing into the barn. When he returns to 1985 at the end, the parking lot he dashes back to is now called the Lone Pine Mall.)

No it doesn't. It's a Stephen Sondheim musical from the '70s.
